Juliana Village Activities Program – July 2018

The Culture of the month is : Italian

8 Most Famous Landmarks in Italy

1. Milan Cathedral Also known as the Duomo di Milano, this grand building is the second largest Catholic cathedral in the world. Only Spain’s Seville Cathedral is larger. The Milan Cathedral is a wondrous white structure that covers an entire block. Its exterior features thousands of spires, and there are more statutes on this gothic and neogothic cathedral than on any other building in the world. Construction on this building first began in 1386, but — probably not surprising given its size — it took approximately five centuries to complete. With five naves, the interior of this cathedral is also very large. If you have time, make sure to venture to the top of the cathedral where you can enjoy stunning views of the surrounding area.

2. Cathedral of Monreale Located in Sicily, this attractive building can be found just a few miles from Palermo, the capital city of this island. The Monreale Cathedral, which was once a part of a royal complex, is considered by many to be the finest example of Norman architecture in Sicily. Construction first began on this building in the 12th century and because Sicilian and Byzantine craftsmen worked on the project, you can see influences from both cultures throughout the cathedral.

Juliana Village Activities Program – July 2018

The Monreale Cathedral is most famous for the gorgeous golden mosaics depicting events from the Bible that cover its interior. And if you decide to make the climb to the top of this cathedral, which is located high up on a slope of Monte Caputo, you will be rewarded with beautiful views of Palermo.

3. Ponte Vecchio The much-photographed Ponte Vecchio, which spans the Arno River, is the oldest bridge in Florence. The bridge as it appears today dates back to 1345, though it is believed that there may have been a structure spanning the river prior to that. The Ponte Vecchio you can see today is a closed medieval stone bridge that is home to numerous goldsmiths and jewelry shops and is bustling with tourists. During World War II, this bridge was the only one spared by the Germans as they retreated. Local legend claims that it was Adolf Hitler who ordered that the famous bridge be spared because he was so impressed with it during his visit to Florence in 1939.

4. Mount Etna Mount Etna, which is located on Sicily’s east coast, is Europe’s largest and most active volcano. Eruptions, in fact, happen quite frequently. In December 2015, for example, Etna let loose a brief but impressive lava fountain that spewed 3,200 feet over the volcano. Surprisingly, you can still visit this active volcano. There is a cable car that will take you partway up Etna, and from there, you can choose to walk up to designated craters. Or you can choose to forego the cable car and just walk all the way up. There are also 4×4 tours available that will take you to explore the volcano and to a cave, where you can check out old lava flows.

5. Trevi Fountain

Even if you didn’t know its name, you are probably familiar with this famous fountain that visitors throw coins in to ensure that they will return to Rome. That fountain is called the Fontana di Trevi or the Trevi Fountain. This stunning beauty is truly a work of art and is the largest Baroque fountain in Rome. The Trevi Fountain consists of a facade and a sea reef created from travertine as well as gorgeous statues carved from Carrara marble. At the fountain’s center is a large statue of Neptune. Below him are two Tritons leading two sea horses, one wild and one tame, which are meant to reflect the two moods of the sea. This stunning fountain has been featured in several movies, including La Dolce Vita and Roman Holiday.

Juliana Village Activities Program – July 2018

6. Rialto Bridge The Rialto Bridge is, arguably, the most famous of Venice’s many stunning bridges. This beautiful arched stone bridge was built between 1588 and 1591 and spans the Grand Canal. The Rialto Bridge boasts three walkways. The central walkway is wide and lined with shops, while the two others are much narrower and look out over the water. Many visitors flock to this area to take pictures of this beautiful bridge and to also shoot photos of the Grand Canal and the gondolas from the Rialto.

7. Colosseum The Colosseum is located in the center of Rome, and it is one of Italy’s most iconic sites. Construction on this impressive building began in 72 AD, and during its heyday, this grand stone amphitheater could seat more than 50,000 spectators and was the site of brutal gladiator battles, chariot races, fights between wild animals as well as humans battling with beasts. The Colosseum was also designed to be watertight so that mock navy battles could be fought in the arena. Although only two- thirds of the original structure remains, it is still a very interesting and impressive place to visit, especially if you have an interest in gladiators. 8. Tower of Pisa

This famous leaning tower can be found in Pisa, a seaside town located in Tuscany. The tower is part of cathedral complex known as Campo dei Miracoli. This world-famous tower, which is more than 180 feet tall, is actually the freestanding bell tower for the cathedral. It began leaning during its construction because the soil underneath it had shifted. For a while, it was feared that the structure was going to collapse, but work was done on it to stabilize it. And in 2010, the building was reopened to visitors after it was deemed strong enough to handle the traffic.

Population & Ethnicity:

Italy is home to more than 62 million individuals as of 2017 and is ranked 23rd in population size when compared with other countries throughout the world. Italian culture is steeped in the arts, family, architecture, music and food.

Juliana Village Activities Program – July 2018

Home of the Roman Empire and a major centre of the Renaissance, culture on the Italian peninsula has flourished for centuries. Here is a brief overview of Italian customs and traditions. About 96 percent of the population of Italy is Italian, though there are many other ethnicities that live in this country. North African Arab, Italo- Albanian, Albanian, German, Austrian and some other European groups fill out the remainder of the population. Bordering countries of France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia to the north have influenced Italian culture, as have the Mediterranean islands of Sardinia and Sicily and Sardinia.

Languages of Italy

The official language of the country is Italian. About 93 percent of the Italian population speaks Italian as native language, according to the BBC. There are a number of dialects of the language spoken in the country, including Sardinian, Friulian, Neapolitan, Sicilian, Ligurian, Piedmontese, Venetian and Calabrian. Milanese is also spoken in Milan. Other languages spoken by native Italians include Albanian, Bavarian, Catalan, Cimbrian, Corsican, Croatian, French, German, Greek, Slovenian and Walser.

Family life in Italy

"Family is an extremely important value within the Italian culture," Talia Wagner, a Los Angeles-based marriage and family therapist, told Live Science. Their family solidarity is focused on extended family rather than the West's idea of "the nuclear family" of just a mom, dad and kids, Wagner explained.

Italians have frequent family gatherings and enjoy spending time with those in their family. "Children are reared to remain close to the family upon adulthood and incorporate their future family into the larger network," said Wagner.

Juliana Village Activities Program – July 2018

Religion in Italy

The major religion in Italy is Roman Catholicism. This is not surprising, as Vatican City, located in the heart of Rome, is the hub of Roman Catholicism and where the Pope resides. Roman Catholics and other Christians make up 80 percent of the population, though only one-third of those are practicing Catholics. The country also has a growing Muslim immigrant community, according to the University of Michigan. Muslim, agnostic and atheist make up the other 20 percent of the population, according to the Central Intelligence Agency. (Photo-The sun sets at Lucca in Tuscany).

Art and architecture in Italy Italy has given rise to a number of architectural styles, including classical Roman, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical. Italy is home to some of the most famous structures in the world, including the Colosseum and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The concept of a basilica — which was originally used to describe an open public court building and evolved to mean a Catholic pilgrimage site — was born in Italy. The word, according to the Oxford Dictionary, is derived from Latin and meant "royal palace." The word is also from the Greek basilikē, which is the feminine of basilikos which means "royal" or basileus, which means "king." Italy also is home to many castles, such as the Valle d'Aosta Fort Bard, the Verrès Castle and the Ussel Castle. Florence, Venice and Rome are home to many museums, but art can be viewed in churches and public buildings. Most notable is the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel of the Vatican ( Pictured ), painted by Michelangelo sometime between 1508 and 1512.

Opera has its roots in Italy and many famous — including "Aida" and "La Traviata," both by Giuseppe Verdi, and "Pagliacci" by Ruggero Leoncavallo — were written in Italian and are still performed in the native language. More recently, Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti made more accessible to the masses as a soloist and as part of the Three Tenors.

Juliana Village Activities Program – July 2018

Italy is home to a number of world-renowned fashion houses, including Armani, Gucci, Benetton, Versace and Prada.

Italian cuisine

Italian cuisine has influenced food culture around the world and is viewed as a form of art by many. Wine, cheese and pasta are important part of Italian meals. Pasta comes in a wide range of shapes, widths and lengths, including penne, spaghetti, linguine, fusilli and lasagne ( Pictured ).

For Italians, food isn't just nourishment, it is life.

"Family gatherings are frequent and often centred around food and the extended networks of families," said Wagner.

No one area of Italy eats the same things as the next. Each region has its own spin on "Italian food," according to CNN. For example, most of the foods that Americans view as Italian, such as spaghetti and pizza, come from central Italy. In the North of Italy, fish, potatoes, rice, sausages, pork and different types of cheeses are the most common ingredients. Pasta dishes with tomatoes are popular, as are many kinds of stuffed pasta, polenta and risotto. In the South, tomatoes dominate dishes, and they are either served fresh or cooked into sauce. Southern cuisine also includes capers, peppers, olives and olive oil, garlic, artichokes, eggplant and ricotta cheese. Wine is also a big part of Italian culture, and the country is home to some of the world's most famous vineyards.

The oldest traces of Italian wine were recently discovered in a cave near Sicily's southwest coast. "The archaeological implications of this new data are enormous, especially considering that the identification of wine [is] the first and earliest-attested presence of such product in an archaeological context in Sicily," researchers wrote in the study, published online August 2017 in the Microchemical Journal.

Staples of Italian cuisine include roasted peppers, tomatoes, zucchini, pasta, prosciutto, garlic, cheese and capers.

Ferrari & Lamborghini sports cars originated in Italy …

FUN FERRARI FACTS YOU MAY NOT KNOW

1. In 1908, Enzo Ferrari's father took him and his older brother to a race in Bologna. There, he became smitten with racing and wanted to become a race car driver. Ferrari's dream became reality in 1919, when he made his racing debut at the age of 21. 2. During World War I, Enzo was a blacksmith and mule-shoer for the Italian army. 3. In 1916, Enzo's father and brother died during an Italian flu outbreak, and in 1918, Enzo himself got the disease and almost died. Enzo was discharged from the Italian army. He discovered that his family's metal engineering firm had collapsed. Enzo had to look for a job. When Fiat turned him down, he found a job as a test-driver for a small carmaker called CMN. A year later, his friend got him a job at Alfa Romeo as a race car driver. Ten years later, he started his own racing team, Scuderia ("stable") Ferrari. 4. The black prancing horse in the famous Ferrari logo was originally the symbol of Count Francesco Baracca, a flying ace in the Italian air force during World War I. 5. The very first car* produced and built under the Ferrari name is the Ferrari 125 S (125 after the engine displacement and S for Sport). I think it's one of the most beautiful cars - if not the most beautiful - Ferrari has ever made (though the 166 MM Barchetta ain't bad).. 6. You all know that Ferraris are expensive, but would you believe that even their brochures are pricey? In 1985, a brochure for the 1960's Ferrari 250 Le Mans fetched £1,070 at a Christie's auction in Monaco. A world record till today. 7. The most expensive Ferrari ever sold was 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa. It got 9.02 million euros in a recent auction. 8. The 1962-1964 Ferrari 250 GTO is often called the most sought after car in the world. Only 39 were produced. 9. In 2002 Ferrari introduced the Enzo Ferrari. Only 400 cars were ever made ... and so far, 14 Enzos have been totaled. At a million bucks EACH! 10. All "Dino" Ferraris (road and racing cars) are equipped with a 1.5 liter DOHC V6 engine. They're named after Enzo's son, Dino, who helped design this engine before his untimely death. Fun Facts about Lamborghini Fact 1: Lamborghini is named after the founder of the company Ferruccio Lamborghini.

Fact 2: The fastest Lamborghini car in the world (Murcielago R-GT) has a top speed of of 370 km/h.

Fact 3: In 1963, when Lamborghini was founded, it first manufactured tractors for several years. Fact 4: The most expensive Lamborghini ever sold was the Lamborghini Reventon, for $1,600,000.

Fact 5: Many of the cars are named after Spanish legends.

Fact 6: The first Lamborghini was the 350GTV from 1963.

Fact 7: Lamborghini was once an independent company, but is now owned by Volkswagen AG together with Audi.

Fact 8: Most Lamborghini cars had a v12 engine except for the Gallardo, which has a v10.

Fact 9: The owner of Lamborghini first drove a Ferrari when he started the company, but the car had a constant nagging clutch problem which frustrated him to the extent of making him manufacture cars instead of tractors.

Fact 10: In 2007, Lamborghini sold over 2,580 cars which is the highest amount of cars they have ever sold in a year.

It’s the wire around your neck – it makes people talk louder!” Two antennas met on a roof, Fell in love and got married. The Ceremony wasn’t, but the reception was excellent !!
