Stanley Kubrick’s 18th Century: Painting in Motion and Barry Lyndon as an Enlightenment Gallery Alysse Peery Abstract The only period piece by famed Stanley Kubrick, Barry Lyndon, was a 1975 box office flop, as well as the director’s magnum opus. Perhaps one of the most sumptuous and exquisite examples of cinematography to date, this picaresque film effectively recreates the Age of the Enlightenment not merely through facts or events, but in visual aesthetics. Like exploring the past in a museum exhibit, the film has a painterly quality harkening back to the old masters. The major artistic movements that reigned throughout the setting of the story dominate the manner in which Barry Lyndon tells its tale with Kubrick’s legendary eye for detail. Through visual understanding, the once obscure novel by William Makepeace Thackeray becomes a captivating window into the past in a manner similar to the paintings it emulates. In 1975, the famed and monumental director Stanley Kubrick released his one and only box-office flop. A film described as a “coffee table film”, it was his only period piece, based on an obscure novel by William Makepeace Thackeray (Patterson). Ironically, his most forgotten work is now considered his magnum opus by critics, and a complete masterwork of cinematography (BFI, “Art”). A remarkable example of the historical costume drama, it enchants the viewer in a meticulously crafted vision of the Georgian Era. Stanley Kubrick’s film Barry Lyndon encapsulates the painting, aesthetics, and overall feel of the 18th century in such a manner to transform the film into a sort of gallery of period art and society. -

Hidden layers can include the underdrawing, the underpainting or compositional alterations by the artist. In addition, the outer surface of a paint layer may have suffered from discoloration. Thus, a look through the paint surface provides a look over the artist’s shoulder, which is crucial in technical art history, conservation issues and authenticity studies. In this contribution I will focus on the degradation mechanism of early modern painting pigments used in the work of Vincent van Gogh. These include pigments such as cadmium yellow and lead chromate yellow. Recent studies [1,2,3] of these pigments have revealed stability problems. Cadmium yellow, or cadmium sulfide, may suffer from photo-oxidation at the utmost surface of the paint film, resulting in the formation of colorless cadmium sulfate hydrates. Lead chromate, on the other hand, can be subject to a reduction process, yielding green chrome oxide at the visible surface. Obviously, such effects can seriously disfigure the original appearance of Van Gogh's oeuvre, as will be shown by a number of case studies. The degradation mechanisms were revealed using an elaborate analytical campaign, mostly involving cross-sections from the original artwork, as well as model paintings that had been aged artificially. -

REVA WOLF Goya’s “Red Boy” The Making of a Celebrity R W Reva Wolf came to study with Jonathan Brown when, as a student in his seminar on Francisco Goya, she discovered the topic of her Ph.D. dissertation. Brown served as co-advisor with Robert Rosenblum for the dissertation, entitled “Francisco Goya and the Interest in British Art and Aesthetics in Late Eighteenth-Century Spain”, which Wolf defended in . Growing directly out of this Ph.D. work was Wolf’s book and exhibition, Goya and the Satirical Print (). She also wrote one of her two Master’s degree qualifying papers, The Hall of Battles at El Escorial, under Brown’s guidance. Her first professional writing assignment, the essay “Onlooker, Witness and Judge in Goya’s Disasters of War,” for the catalogue of the exhibition Fatal Consequences: Callot, Goya, and the Horrors of War (), was due to Brown’s recommendation. Our museum is thus still a relative newcomer on the international scene. Nonetheless, in this fairly short period, the Van Gogh Museum has established itself as one of the liveliest institutions of its kind, with a growing reputation for its collections, exhibitions and research programmes. The past year has been marked by particular success: the Van Gogh and Gauguin exhibition attracted record numbers of visitors to its Amsterdam venue. And in this Journal we publish our latest acquisitions, including Manet's The jetty at Boulogne-sur-mer, the first important work by this artist to enter any Dutch public collection. By a happy coincidence, our 30th anniversary coincides with the 150th of the birth of Vincent van Gogh. As we approach this milestone it seemed to us a good moment to reflect on the current state of Van Gogh studies. For this issue of the Journal we asked a number of experts to look back on the most significant developments in Van Gogh research since the last major anniversary in 1990, the centenary of the artist's death. Our authors were asked to filter a mass of published material in differing areas, from exhibition publications to writings about fakes and forgeries. To complement this, we also invited a number of specialists to write a short piece on one picture from our collection, an exercise that is intended to evoke the variety and resourcefulness of current writing on Van Gogh. -

Fénéon identified greater scientific rigor as the key difference between Neo-Impressionism and its predecessor. Where the Impressionists were “arbitrary” in their techniques, the Neo- Impressionists had developed a “conscious and scientific” method through a careful study of contemporary color theorists such as Michel Chevreul and Ogden Rood. The subject matter is similar: an outdoor scene of people at leisure, lounging in a park by a river or dancing and drinking on a café terrace. -
