Warrior, from Celtic Frost and Triptykon, started back in 1982 a band called Hellhammer. The band existed for a mere two years, from May 1982 to May 1984. During this time, the band released three demos, one 12-inch EP, and two songs on the legendary "Death Metal" compilation album. The band disbanded when Hellhammer members Tom Gabriel Warrior and Martin Eric Ain went on to form Celtic Frost. Warrior has made it clear; Hellhammer will never return and will never be reformed. Still the music exists, and it is an extremely important part of Tom G. Warrior's life and extreme metal in general – widely credited as pioneers of extreme metal. Even if Hellhammer is a band of the past, Warrior had an urge to perform the classics on stage. This is when Triumph of Death became an reality. Triumph of Death is a band solely dedicated to perform the legendary music from Hellhammer. -
Learning Content Similarity for Music Recommendation
JOURNAL OF LATEX CLASS FILES, VOL. 6, NO. 1, JANUARY 2007 1 Learning content similarity for music recommendation Brian McFee, Student member, IEEE, Luke Barrington, Student member, IEEE, and Gert Lanckriet, Member, IEEE Abstract—Many tasks in music information retrieval, such Query song as recommendation, and playlist generation for online radio, Similar songs + fall naturally into the query-by-example setting, wherein a user + queries the system by providing a song, and the system responds - - + + with a list of relevant or similar song recommendations. “Voodoo Circle” Voodoo Circle, or Alex Beyrodt’s Voodoo Genrre: Symphonic Power Metal even go as far as to say it was the best of the lot, such is Circle to give it its full title, is the latest project release from the magic spell these songs weave from beginning to end. the ever busy German guitarist. Perhaps best known for AFM Records Not a million miles from the statesman like his time with Sinner, or more recently through his live sound of latter day Silent Force, what really distinguishes work with Primal Fear, Alex has also been an intrinsic part Voodoo Circle is the wonderfully Rainbowesque neo- of a couple of excellent side projects – namely The Sygnet classical vibe which courses through its veins. As an old with then Jaded Heart front man Michael Bormann, and school (read Dio) era Rainbow fan of many years standing, Silent Force with erstwhile Royal Hunt vocalist DC Cooper, I can appreciate the efforts of anyone attempting to emulate the latter of which still seems to be very much a going that particularly illustrious era; and I can tell you now, few concern. have done it with such style as Voodoo Circle. Yet, whilst Assembling something of a stellar line up, the ghost of Rainbow past makes its presence felt at every Voodoo Circle sees Alex throwing in his lot with Pink single turn, this is no mere homage to things past. Quite Cream 69 vocalist David Readman, Sinner/Primal Fear the opposite really as it drags that evocative sound kicking bassist Mat Sinner, keyboard player Jimmy Kresic, and and screaming into the 21st Century – Rainbow meets drummer Mel Gaynor (who has played with the likes of Time Requiem anyone?! For Lynne Littman and Brandon Millan We still have dreams, but we know now that most of them will come to nothing. And we also most fortunately know that it really doesn’t matter. —Raymond Chandler, letter to Charles Morton, October 9, 1950 Introduction: First Goodbyes Jack Nicholson, a boy, could never forget sitting at the bar with John J. Nicholson, Jack’s namesake and maybe even his father, a soft little dapper Irishman in glasses. He kept neatly combed what was left of his red hair and had long ago separated from Jack’s mother, their high school romance gone the way of any available drink. They told Jack that John had once been a great ballplayer and that he decorated store windows, all five Steinbachs in Asbury Park, though the only place Jack ever saw this man was in the bar, day-drinking apricot brandy and Hennessy, shot after shot, quietly waiting for the mercy to kick in. -
Identity, Cosmopolitanism and Education in Extreme Metal Bands: the Case of Finland
Historia y Memoria de la Educación 12 (2020): 303-332 Sociedad Española de Historia de la Educación ISSN: 2444-0043 DOI: 10.5944/hme.12.2020.26507 IDENTITY, COSMOPOLITANISM AND EDUCATION IN EXTREME METAL BANDS: THE CASE OF FINLAND Identidad, cosmopolitismo y educación en las bandas de metal extremo: el caso de Finlandia Eugenio Otero Urtazaα Reception date: 22/01/2020 • Acceptation date: 08/03/2020 Abstract. Music is an art that often defines the education and values of peo- ple. Extreme Metal is a controversial musical genre that at times, in some of its subgenres, has caused episodes of exceptional violence. Metalheads make up a cultural movement that is present on all conti- nents. Metal movements are difficult to dissolve in the magma of social acceptance: they create a consciousness of transnational solidarity, of response to waste and ostentation that destroys the planet, while claim- ing the place in which it is lived. Extreme Metal is not an artistic fashion, it is profoundly changing the mentality of many young people who reject the social organisation of the capitalist and Christian world and try to find alternatives for the future. In this article we ask how their convic- tions are formed and in what way the school’s teachings influence them. One of the ways of studying the phenomenon is by analysing the lyrics of the songs. Not all subgenres can be covered and three Melodic Death Metal bands from Finland have been chosen for study, especially in rela- tion to their feelings about nature and the cosmos. It is evident that their songs are often based on classical and popular poems learned at school, by the legacy left by the great Finnish poets, and even by the literary cre- ations of musicians for that school resonance. -

The Experiences of Metal Fans with Mental and Developmental Disorders in the Metal Music Community
1 The experiences of metal fans with mental and developmental disorders in the metal music community Kyle J. Messick, Blanca Aranda, Chris Day Coventry University Abstract A series of interviews were conducted to explore the experience of what it is like to be a member of metal music culture living with mental health conditions and/or developmental disabilities. Ten participants were interviewed, three of which had schizophrenia, four with autism spectrum disorder, two had bipolar affective disorder, and one had borderline personality disorder. Thematic analysis was utilized to explore the experiences of people living with various types of mental illness and developmental disabilities in the context of metal, which resulted in the development of three overarching themes. It was found that participants felt that the metal music community was more welcoming to them due to the broad use of lyrics about mental health topics and the prevalence of metal musicians that have mental health concerns. The broad application of mental health topics in metal was seen as having a de-stigmatizing effect towards mental health concerns, but at the cost of accuracy, as topics like schizophrenia are seen as fetishized and inaccurately depicted. Participants reported that the metal community affords its members with mental health conditions and developmental 2 disabilities a number benefits including a sense of belonging, the facilitation of mood maintenance, and the management of lesser symptoms. Symptom management appeared to be mitigated by symptom severity and influenced how participants experienced metal music. Keywords Mental illness, schizophrenia, autism, heavy metal, BPD, BPAD, belonging, stigma Introduction Metal music and its associated global musical culture began in the late 1960s and was characterized by a musical style that included loud volume, fast tempos, pounding percussion, and distorted guitars.
