Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

    Motörhead Magic for Robe | 1

    Motörhead Magic for Robe | 1 Pics by Louise Stickland Motörhead, one of the most truly iconic bands in the history of heavy, hard and speed metal, with an illustrious and thunderous career that blasted off in the 1970s and rocked gloriously loudly for the next 40 years until their last live gig in Berlin on 11th December 2015. Story and Photos by Louise Stickland. The band officially ended on 28th December 2015, two and a half weeks after that memorable show in Berlin, and part way through the “Bad Magic” tour with the passing of founder, lead singer and rock ‘n’ roll warrior Lemmy (Ian Fraser Kilmister) aged 70. The “Bad Magic” tour was supporting of their 22nd studio album – for which lighting designer Caio Bertti sculpted a classic rock ’n’ roll look with the contemporary twist of moving lights from Robe. The famous Motörhead bomber set piece also flew again for this European tour – its last as it would turn out – and its first time on a tour for many years. It was completely refurbished and brought bang up-to-date with new lighting including Robe Pointes and LEDWash 600s plus a full automation system making it more agile and maneuverable than ever before Their shows have always been uncompromisingly rock ‘n’ roll, and this one very much mimicked Motörhead Magic for Robe | 2 that oeuvre, however Caio broke new ground in 2013 when asked onboard by previous LD Stefan Sjoland … and became the first to introduce moving lights to the stage with 24 x Robe Pointes on the “Aftershock” tour.

The Swords nye album, ’Apocryphon’, udkommer herhjemme i næste måned, og til næste år lægger texanerne vejen forbi Lille VEGA den 27. januar. Apocryphon udgives i Danmark The Sword spiller stoner-metal spækket med mægtige riffs og har netop udgivet deres fjerde album, Apocryphon, i hjemlandet USA. De har varmet op for gigantiske metal-acts som Metallica og Ozzy Osbourne, hvor af den sidstnævnte må siges at kunne genkendes som en direkte inspirationskilde for de kompromisløse amerikanere. Hvor The Swords forrige udgivelse, Warp Riders (2010), var et konceptalbum inspireret af en sci-fi-fortælling af sanger og guitarist John ”J.D.” Cronise, er det nye album, der først udkommer i Danmark den 5. november, i højere grad inspireret af sangerens egne meninger og tanker. Før sin danske udgivelse har Apocryphon vækket begejstring hos anmeldere og fans.
