He was an instructor at the YMCA in Springfield, Mass. In 1891 he asked a custodian to nail two peach baskets to a gymnasium balcony, which just happened to be 10 feet high. The methods of this research included a historical study of the career of Coach Lou Carnesecca and his professional style. The results of this study indicate that there are learning takeaways for professionals and executives that go beyond basketball including his charismatic and endearing approach, his understanding and love for his employer and his distinct professional philosophy. The conclusions of this study illustrate that professionals, beyond basketball, can learn valuable professional lessons from this quintessential coach. In addition, this research relates to the world of sports in that often times the human characteristics behind a coach can define his / her brand in the long term. SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS Squash Team Finishes as National Runner-up Although the Yellowjackets came heart- breakingly short of claiming their first squash national championship, the 2015– 16 season was marked by historic mile- stones in arguably the best season ever for the program. At the top of the list was a victory over defending national champion Trinity Col- lege in the semifinals of the College Squash Association’s Potter Cup. That win knocked Trinity out of the ti- tle game for the first time in 19 years and guaranteed that the Yellowjackets would finish above their previous national best of third in 2009. In the championship match against Yale University, the Yellowjackets battled from behind to force a 4–4 tie with only one point left to be decided. In the final set, Tomotaka Endo ’18 lost to Yale’s Kah Wah Cheong, sending the championship to New Haven. Torrey Pines beat San Marcos on Tuesday night to move to 16-4 on the season, 3-0 in league, and extend their winning streak to five straight. La Costa Canyon lost on a half-court buzzer beater at Carlsbad on Tuesday night. That snapped a seven game winning streak, moved them to 14-8 on the year, and was their first loss in league. 2. The Falcons have now won eight straight over the Mavericks. The last win for La Costa Canyon came on January 17th, 2014 at home on a Tommy McCarthy buzzer beater, 54-52. 3. In the Maxpreps era, the Falcons are 14-13 against the Mavericks. Last season, the teams faced off twice in Avocado West League play. The scores were 62-49 (leading scorer Bryce Pope with 22) and 73-53 (leading scorer Mike Pope with 22), both in favor of the Falcons. 4. In the Avocado West League, the Falcons currently maintain sole possession of first place at 3-0. Carlsbad and La Costa Canyon are 2-1, Mission Hills and San Marcos are 1-2, and Canyon Crest is 0-3. 5. This will be the eighth away game for the Falcons this season. They are 6-1 with the only blemish coming in the season’s first road game – and third game overall – against then-#5 Mater Dei Catholic. -

Jared Miller Buzzer Beater
FORM: Jared Miller Buzzer Beater TEACHER WORKSHEET: GRADES 7-8 This lesson plan provides an engaging way for students to listen to Jared Miller’s Buzzer Beater and document the unconventional sound eects we hear in this piece. Miller uses instruments and objects to create a musical representation of the last two minutes of a basketball game. The following activities will guide students in listening for the interesting sound eects in this piece, and tracking them both in real time and in the orchestral score. Age appropriate learning within this lesson plan includes exploring dierent timbres or qualities of sounds and reading musical notation. OBJECTIVES • Actively listen for sound effects in a piece of music. • Learn how to listen using timecodes to identify musical events in a piece of music. • Learn how to listen using page numbers and bar numbers to identify musical events in a piece of music. STEPS • Together as a class or in pairs, have students read the introduction to this module found at TSO.CA/Elearning, which includes composer Jared Miller’s description of the piece. • Hand out the Sound Effect Scavenger Hunt worksheet to each student or pair of students. • Have students use the following link to access the recording of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra performing Buzzer Beater on YouTube, where they will be able to see the video timecode and record it in column two of the worksheet: https://youtu.be/2XkbGFpjUpY • Have students access the score to Buzzer Beater at TSO.CA/Elearning and look for text indicating each sound effect. Revised 12/05 Mac Chauvin Director of Officials Louisiana High School1 Athletic Association PREPARATION FOR OFFICIATING The first step for an official who desires to work high school games is to become registered with his/her own state high school association. No interschool game should be scheduled until this has been done. Registering assures that the official will receive all needed supplies and full information as to interpretations and policies in the given state. Complete knowledge of the rules is essential. There is no substitute for rules study. The rules should be reviewed well before the opening of the season, and this study should be continued up to the final game. Knowing all phases of the rules at the end of the season is no guarantee that it will carry over to the next season. Discussion of situations in small groups is effective. Writing the comprehensive tests in the material provided by each state association is excellent training in analysis and in the building of confidence. Even the most complicated situations can be separated into basic rule statements to eliminate argument and doubt. Good officiating mechanics and techniques will be promoted by frequent study of this officials manual. Knowing and maintaining correct positions on the court is important in administering the rules. Rules interpretation meetings and officials' clinics sponsored by a state association or by local officials' groups should be attended regularly. Much can also be gained from informal meetings of small groups of officials living in a given area. Rulings for controversial situations which may arise should be requested from the state association office.
