SCROCCHI 2 1/nstituto Nacional de Limnologia (INAL/), CONICET, Jose Macia 1933, 3016 Santo Tome, Santa Fe, Argentina 2lnstituto de Herpetologia, Fundaci6n Miguel Lillo, Miguel Lillo 251 4000, Tucuman, Argentina We present a revision of Atractus in north-eastern Argentina based on the examination of newly collected specimens and most of the material available in Argentinean museums. Four species are reported: A. snethlageae, A. paraguayensis, A. reticulatus and A. taeniatus. Atractus badius was erroneously cited as occurring in Argentina based on a specimen from Las Palmas, Chaco province which is reassigned to A. snethlageae. This record represents a considerable southern extension of the known range of the species. Atractus paraguayensis is redescribed based on three new specimens. This species was previously known only from the holotype reported from "Paraguay" without definite locality data. Adult and juvenile colour patterns in life are described. The validity of some diagnostic characters is discussed, and new diagnostic characters are given for A. reticulatus and A. paraguayensis. All species examined showed noteworthy variation in colour pattern. Sexual dimorphism is reported in all species. The distributional patterns and phytogeographic areas occupied by each species in Argentina are discussed. We also characterize morphological variation for each and provide a key for the Argentinean species. Revision of the Genus Atractus in Surinam, with the Resurrection of Two Species (Colubridae, Reptilia)
REVISION OF THE GENUS ATRACTUS IN SURINAM, WITH THE RESURRECTION OF TWO SPECIES (COLUBRIDAE, REPTILIA) NOTES ON THE HERPETOFAUNA OF SURINAM VII by M. S. HOOGMOED Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden With 17 text-figures, 6 plates and 1 table ABSTRACT A re-examination of old specimens of the genus Atractus, preserved in the Rijks- museum van Natuurlijke Historie resulted in the discovery of syntypes of Brachyorrhos badius F. Boie, B. flammigerus F. Boie, B. schach F. Boie and Rabdosoma torquatus Dumeril, Bibron & Dumeril. Lectotypes for all these species are designated. B. flammi- gerus and B. schach have been considered synonyms of Atractus badius since 1837. This proved to be wrong, they turned out to be valid taxa exhibiting differences in scale counts, body size, hemipenial morphology and colour pattern. Among recently collected material from Surinam the recently described A. zidoki Gasc & Rodrigues was discovered and described on the basis of seven specimens. Both A. latifrons (Günther) and A. favae (Filippi) are reported for the first time from Surinam. Including A. elaps (Günther) the total number of species now known from Surinam is eight. Data gathered in Surinam indicate that the existence of many localised forms in Atractus is real and that under the name A. badius probably several other taxa are hiding. A revision of the entire genus is badly needed. Taxonomic and natural history data are presented on eight species of Atractus from the Manaus region, central Amazonia, Brazil, namely: A. alphonsehogei, A. latifrons, A. major, A. poeppigi, A. schach, A. snethlageae, A. torquatus, and A. trilineatus. Four of these species are recorded for the first time for the region, which indicates the scarcity of snake collections in central Amazonia. CHARACTERIZING VERTEBRATE RHODOPSIN NATURAL VARIATION IN EVOLUTION, FUNCTION, AND DISEASE by Nihar Bhattacharya A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Cell and Systems Biology University of Toronto © Copyright by Nihar Bhattacharya (2018) CHARACTERIZING VERTEBRATE RHODOPSIN NATURAL VARIATION IN EVOLUTION, FUNCTION, AND DISEASE Nihar Bhattacharya Doctor of Philosophy Department of Cell and Systems Biology University of Toronto 2018 ABSTRACT Vertebrate dim light vision is mediated by the rod visual pigment, rhodopsin, a member of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily of proteins. In the dark, rhodopsin is covalently bound to a vitamin A-derived 11-cis chromophore, which acts as an inverse agonist to stabilize the inactive state of rhodopsin. When exposed to light of a maximal wavelength (λmax), the 11-cis retinal chromophore isomerizes to an all-trans conformation, initiating a series of structural shifts to the light-activated state of rhodopsin. This results in a signalling cascade within the rod photoreceptor cell and, ultimately, the perception of light. The goal of this thesis is to investigate natural variation in rhodopsin function in the context of evolutionary adaptation, chromophore usage, and disease mutations. Following a general introduction, in Chapter II, I characterize the visual system of the diurnal colubrid snake Pituophis melanoleucus using immunohistochemistry of retinal sections and spectroscopy of ii purified visual pigments expressed in vitro, revealing an unusual rhodopsin with cone opsin properties found in cone-like rod photoreceptors. In Chapter III, I investigate the effects of the rare vertebrate chromophore, 11-cis 3,4 dehydroretinal (A2), on the spectral and non- spectral properties of rhodopsin. -

Early observations by naturalists of the mimetic association between venomous New World coral snakes of the genus Micrurus and harmless mimics has stimulated an intense debate about the causes and consequences of mimicry that persists today. Despite its medical, evolutionary and historical importance our understanding of evolution within the genus Micrurus is negligible. My dissertation explores the evolution of mimicry within South American coral snakes and their mimics using a multi-scale framework involving macroevolutionary (Chapter I), geographic/morphological concordance (Chapters II and III), behavioral (Chapter IV), and phylogeographic (Chapter V) approaches.
