Nansei Islands Biological Diversity Evaluation Project Report 1 Chapter 1
Introduction WWF Japan’s involvement with the Nansei Islands can be traced back to a request in 1982 by Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh. The “World Conservation Strategy”, which was drafted at the time through a collaborative effort by the WWF’s network, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), posed the notion that the problems affecting environments were problems that had global implications. Furthermore, the findings presented offered information on precious environments extant throughout the globe and where they were distributed, thereby providing an impetus for people to think about issues relevant to humankind’s harmonious existence with the rest of nature. One of the precious natural environments for Japan given in the “World Conservation Strategy” was the Nansei Islands. The Duke of Edinburgh, who was the President of the WWF at the time (now President Emeritus), naturally sought to promote acts of conservation by those who could see them through most effectively, i.e. pertinent conservation parties in the area, a mandate which naturally fell on the shoulders of WWF Japan with regard to nature conservation activities concerning the Nansei Islands. This marked the beginning of the Nansei Islands initiative of WWF Japan, and ever since, WWF Japan has not only consistently performed globally-relevant environmental studies of particular areas within the Nansei Islands during the 1980’s and 1990’s, but has put pressure on the national and local governments to use the findings of those studies in public policy. Unfortunately, like many other places throughout the world, the deterioration of the natural environments in the Nansei Islands has yet to stop. -

They feature prominently in folklore, mythology and other belief systems of the indigenous people of the region, and are of ecological and conservation value, some species supporting significant (albeit often illegal) economic activities (primarily, the snake-skin trade, but also sale of meat and other body parts that purportedly have medicinal properties). -
A New Species of the Genus Calamaria (Squamata: Colubridae) from Yunnan Province, China
Copeia 106, No. 3, 2018, 485–491 A New Species of the Genus Calamaria (Squamata: Colubridae) from Yunnan Province, China Jian-Huan Yang1 and Xi Zheng1 A new reed snake of the genus Calamaria Boie, 1827, Calamaria andersoni, new species, is described on the basis of a single male specimen collected from Yingjiang County, Yunnan Province, China. The new species can be distinguished from other congeners by the unique combination of the following morphological characters: nine modified maxillary teeth; four supralabials, second and third supralabials entering orbit; one preocular; mental not touching anterior chin shields; six shields and scales surrounding the paraparietal; dorsal scales in 13:13:13 rows; 171 ventral scales; 23 subcaudals; tail slowly tapering anteriorly, then abruptly tapering at tip; dorsal scales reduced to four rows on tail at last two subcaudals; dorsum of body and tail brownish with indistinct narrow black stripes on sides; dark collar on neck absent; light rings/blotches on neck and tail absent; and ventral scales with dark outermost corners. Calamaria andersoni, new species, is the fourth species of the genus recorded from China. HE colubrid genus Calamaria Boie, 1827 is one of the performed in a reaction volume of 25 ll containing 100 ng of largest groups of Asian snakes and extends from the template DNA, 0.3 mM of each PCR primer, and 10 ll Premix T Ryukyu Islands of Japan, southwest through main- EX TaqTM (Takara). The PCR conditions were an initial land China and Southeast Asia, to Sumatra and adjacent denaturing step at 958C for 4 min, followed by 35 cycles of islands, eastward to Sulawesi (Inger and Marx, 1965; Grismer denaturing at 948C for 30 s, annealing at 528C for 30 s, an et al., 2004). -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract As currently understood Atractus latifrons is widely distributed in South America, occurring from Suriname to the east of the Andes in Bolivia. Throughout this widespread distribution, at least three distinct color patterns were previously report- ed in the literature. Here, we test whether quantitative variation and qualitative distribution of morphological characters are correlated with any color pattern displayed by the species along its range. We recognize three aposematic color patterns (bicolor in monads, tricolor in dyads, and tricolor in tetrads) for A. latifrons. We found no obvious correspondence between these patterns and any character systems analyzed herein. -

R. DUNN Thanks to the kindness of Dr. G. K. Noble, I have recently been able to examnine the collections of Central American snakes in the American Museum. I refer particularly to the old Cope collectionfrom Costa Rica, the Mannhardt-Halter collection from Nicaragua, and the Rulthling collection from Mexico. These collections contain a good many interest- ing and a few new forms. GzOPHIS The small Central American ground snakes allied to Geophis are in a rather mixed condition. Geophis sall.i has the hemipenis single, the sulcus forked, and the distal half of the organ covered with fringed calyces. The proximal edge of the calyculate region is free and hence the organ is "capitate," the proximal one-fourth is smooth, and the re- maining one-fourth has a few hooks. This type of hemipenis is practically that of Carphophis, which differs from Geophis and the related genera as follows: ANT. TEMP. NASAL ANAIL Carphophis Present 1 2 Geophis Absent 2 1 Atractus Present 2 1 Adelphicos Present 2 2 Atractus has a very different hemipenis from that of Geophis, as it is deeply furcate, and spinous, and noncalyculate, throughout. Adelphicos has enormous geneials, a completely spinous hemipenis, and the sulcus is not forked as it is in the other three, which, if correct, means that it is not at all related. The Central American forms which Boulenger places in Atractus seem much more closely allied to Geophis. -

A new species of Calamaria is described based on a single specimen collected in the tropical rain forest, Thua Thien – Hue Province, Vietnam. The new species is characterized by the following characters: total length 578 mm; tail length 42 mm, tail tip thick, obtusely rounded, and slightly flattened laterally; maxillary teeth eight, modified; loreals absent; preocular present; supralabials 5/5, second and third entering orbit; infralabials 5/5; paraparietal surrounded by five shields; midbody scales in 13 rows, reducing to 11 rows at the level of single anal plate; ventrals 3 + 209; subcaudals 19, divided; body uniform light brown above and without color pattern; belly cream. Prudente1 and Paulo Passos2 A new species of Atractus, previously reported as a disjunct population of A. zidoki south of the Amazon River, differs from all congeners in having an undivided sulcus spermaticus. Herein, we restrict the concept of A. zidoki to populations north of the Amazon River, provide a detailed description of its everted hemipenis, and describe a new species to accommodate the population occurring to the south of the Amazon River. Additionally, we briefly discuss intraspecific variation and the systematic value of the hemipenis structure in snakes, mainly with respect to the genus Atractus. Four species are reported: A. snethlageae, A. paraguayensis, A. reticulatus and A. taeniatus. Atractus badius was erroneously cited as occurring in Argentina based on a specimen from Las Palmas, Chaco province which is reassigned to A. snethlageae. This record represents a considerable southern extension of the known range of the species. Atractus paraguayensis is redescribed based on three new specimens. This species was previously known only from the holotype reported from "Paraguay" without definite locality data. Adult and juvenile colour patterns in life are described. The validity of some diagnostic characters is discussed, and new diagnostic characters are given for A. reticulatus and A. paraguayensis. All species examined showed noteworthy variation in colour pattern. Sexual dimorphism is reported in all species. The distributional patterns and phytogeographic areas occupied by each species in Argentina are discussed. We also characterize morphological variation for each and provide a key for the Argentinean species. This new species is the largest known species of Atractus, reaching almost 120 cm in total length with a robust habitus. We also use multivar- iate statistical analyses of morphometric data to look into the taxonomic confusion involving other large, banded/blotched, species of Atractus in Western Amazonia.
