Bach FRI 22:45 The Essay (b08nf05l) Brandenburg Concerto No. 1 in F, BWV 1046 Luther's Reformation Gang, Philip Melanchthon Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G, BWV 1048 Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B minor, BWV 1067 Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon are the odd couple of the Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 in B flat, BWV 1051 Reformation, inseparable in the religious revolution they Orchestral Suite No. 4 in D, BWV 1069 inaugurated, and yet in personality chalk and cheese ­ and there's Academy for Ancient Music Berlin no doubt that it's Luther who is the cheese: volatile, colourful, impassioned; ripening majestically but also suddenly going off, 3.30pm like one of those goats' cheeses in the middle of France that could J.S. Bach easily double up as an explosive device. Luther has priority in Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D, BWV 1050 terms of being older, and by force of personality. Melanchthon Aapo Häkkinen, harpsichord seems monochrome by comparison. It has been easy for history, Helsinki Baroque Ensemble outside of specialists, to forget him. But if Margaret Thatcher once said of her right­hand man William Whitelaw that "every 3.50pm Prime Minister needs a Willie", this is all the more the case with J.S Bach true revolutionaries. Revolutions seem to need an odd couple: Orchestral Suite No. 1 in C, BWV 1066 Robespierre and Danton, or Marx and Engels. Melanchthon is Academy for Ancient Music Berlin. hardly a household name these days but he is (if you like) a revolutionary's revolutionary. Intellectual, serious, endlessly patient, he kept clearing up the mess that Luther left around him.
