Militärhistorikern, fil dr Arne Stade kommenterar Carl X Gustaf som brevskrivare och framlägger ett antal brev från denne till drott­ ning Hedvig Eleonora. Då konungens brev är synnerligen svåra att läsa, har det ansetts vara motiverat att publicera dessa tolkningar. I en posthum uppsats av kommendör Magnus Hammar diskuteras brittisk maritim strategi under de senaste hundra åren. Kapten Arvid Cronenberg tar sedan upp frågan om förhållandet mellan lantmannapartiet och föreningen Värnpliktens Vänner under försvarsdebatterna i mitten av 1870-talet. Forskningschefen, fil dr Thede Palm publicerar några anteck­ ningar om borggårdskrisen 1914 av general Jochum Akerman, ned­ skrivna i anslutning till publiceringen av professor Axel Brusewitz bok "Kungamakt, herremakt, folkmakt" (Sthlm 1951). Överste K J Mikola, chef för Anstalten för krigshistorisk forsk­ ning, Helsingfors, redogör i anslutning till 50-års minnet av repu­ bliken Finlands självständighet för den finska försvarsmaktens ut­ veckling 1918-1968. I nästa uppsats skildrar fil lie Gunnar Barke hur de illegala routerna mellan Danmark och Sverige under andra världskriget upp­ kom och organiserades. Slutligen ger överste B Furtenbach en kort sammanfattning av det pågående arbetet med en historik över Sveriges militära beredskap 1939-1945. Författarna är ensamma ansvariga för i respektive uppsatser fram­ förda fakta och J.sikter. Stockholm i mars 1968 NILS K. PALMSTIERNA CARL X GUSTAFS BREV TILL DROTTNING HEDVIG ELEONORA Av ARNE STADE Carl X Gustaf var först och sist en den praktiska handlingens man, utåtriktad och dynamisk. Det gäller ocksilom honom vad som tidigare sagts om Carl XII, att han "fäktat vida mer och vida bättre med svärdet än med pennan".1 Men inte desto mindre kom "den förste pfalzaren" att tillbringa en god del av sin tid vid sksivbordet - en långt större del än man med hänsyn till hans kynne skulle ha väntat. Man får förutsätta, att han gjorde det främst av pliktkänsla och ambition. Men kanske ändå inte enbart av sådana motiv. Frågan är, om han inte faktiskt fann sig väl tillrätta även i skrivstolen, rentav skulle kunna betecknas som något av en "skrivbordsmänniska". Carl X Gustafs regeringstid blev kort - knappa sex år varade den. Men det var en politiskt och militärt innehållsrik tid, laddad med dynamik och dramatik. Sällan i svensk historia har det "hänt'' så mycket på så kort tid. Tidsomständigheterna må härvidlag ha varit primärt drivande - man får därför säkerligen inte bortse från bety­ delsen av konungens personliga egenskaper. Om i något eller några fall Geijers ord om Sveriges historia som dess konungars täcker verk­ ligheten, skulle det för visso vara beträffande Carl X Gustaf och den tidens Sverige. Naturligtvis får inte heller förbises, att konungen hade förmånen att vid sin sida ha en stab av dugande och driftiga medarbetare - rikskanslern Erik Oxenstierna, riksdrotsen Per Brahe, riksskattmäs­ taren (och svågern) Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie, riksamiralen och fältmarskalken Carl Gustaf Wrangel, rikstygmästaren och fältmar­ skalken Gustaf Otto Stenbock, för att nu nämna blott de allra mest prominenta. Det är klart att Carl X Gustaf får dela äran av vad som uträttades i hans namn med dessa och andra medhjälpare och förtroendemän. Hans egen betydelsefulla personliga roll som inspira-' tionskälla och primus motor kan emellertid inte ifrågasättas. Därom bär, om ej annat, hans omfångsrika korrespondens vältaligt vittne. 5 Den korrespondens som i första hand åsyftas är de i konungens namn utfärdade och av honom undertecknade officiella sk kansli­ skrivelserna. Dessa var visserligen uppsatta - och kontrasignerade - av fältkansliets sekreterare, inte av kungen själv. Men allt talar för att kungens personliga insats ingalunda inskränkt sig till ett flyktigt genomögnande och en hastigt nedkastad namnteckning. Redan många personligt färgade uttryck och vändningar låter ana, att kungen ofta, om inte direkt dikterat så åtminstone i förväg ingående skisserat avfattningen av breven för vederbörande sekreterare. Direkt signi­ fikativa är de, stundom mycket utförliga, egenhändiga post scripta, som han mycket ofta tillagt i samband med undertecknandet. I ex­ pressiva ordalag upprepas här, och liksom inpräntas, de väsentligaste momenten i brevtexten. Detta ensamt skulle väl inte berättiga till att beteckna Carl X Gustaf som en "skrivbordsmänniska" (vid sidan av sin mångskiftande "praktik"). Förutom kansliskrivelserna har emellertid bevarats ett stort antal egenhändiga brev ( och därtill många egenhändiga min­ nesanteckningar, koncept och andra arbetspapper). Även de helt egenhändiga breven avhandlar i allmänhet mest "tjänsteangelägen­ heter" och skiljer sig alltså innehållsmässigt inte principiellt från kanslibreven. Därav följer också, att de inte är ägnade att i någon högre grad fördjupa och nyansera bilden av människan Carl Gustaf. Men på ett mera påtagligt och direkt sätt än kanslibreven vittnar de egenhändiga om kungens stora vitalitet och arbetsflit - även vid skrivbordet. - Sett i ett vidare perspektiv är det nog ofta så, att handbreven är mera sakligt avslöjande än kanslibreven och såtill­ vida har ett större källvärde. Också låter de brevskrivarens person­ liga förhållande till adressaten komma till klarare uttryck. Något litterärt mästerskap röjer knappast de kungliga handbreven - vilket väl inte heller var att vänta i betraktande av deras prak­ tiskt betonade syfte och de pressande omständigheter, under vilka de vanligen tillkommit. De är skrivna på svenska eller på tyska, tydligt­ vis närmast beroende på mottagarens gängse språkbruk (breven till brodern, hertig Adolf Johan, är tex alla på tyska). Även i de på svenska avfattade breven förekommer dock åtskilliga germanismer. Inslaget av latinska lånord och avledningar är betydande både i de svenska och i de tyska breven. Uttrycksmässigt är språket klart och 6 FACSIMILE AV CARL X GUSTAFS BREV TILL HEDVIG ELEONORA, KONIN 15/8 1655 Brevet, som ej är bland de avtryckta, är mycket karaktäristiskt. Flera av de i texten anförda skrivtekniska egenheterna framträder här ilsk3dligt, koncist, ibland märgfullt och målande, Dispositionellt är breven inte lika rediga. Tankar och infall tycks ofta ha kastats ned tämligen osystematiskt, allteftersom de aktualiserats i brevskrivarens medve- 7, tande. Därav förklaras också åtskilliga, tydligen oavsiktliga, sakliga u pprepnmgar. Till skillnad från kanslibreven har de kungliga handbreven blott i ringa utsträckning utnyttjats av forskningen2• Förklaringen kan man ana: Carl X Gustafs handstil är ytterligt svårforcerad. Visserligen är den driven och på sitt sätt regelbunden. Men den kännetecknas också av en nästan stenografiskt förenklad utformning av framför allt bindeord (ex.: ud=und) och slutstavelser (ett streck eller en släng får oftast ersätta hela stavelsen). Därtill kommer att överhuvud taget de enskilda bokstäverna ofta endast antydes (varvid blott sam­ manhanget klargör vilken bokstav som avses). Läsningen blir inte lättare genom brevskrivarens vana att skriva ihop två eller flera smärre ord, så att de ser ut som om de vore ett enda, på samma gång som han gärna delar upp längre ord efter stavelserna, så att det verkar att vara fråga om flera ord. Lika litet främjas läsbarheten av brev­ skrivarens vana att efter felskrivning av ett ord (eller tom hela ordsekvenser) med kraftigare pennföring skriva det rätta (avsedda) ordet sas i det ursprungliga i stället för att stryka över detta och sedan skriva det nya ordet antingen ovanför eller omedelbart efter. - Allt som allt: det kräver mycken möda och gott om tid att arbeta sig igenom Carl X Gustafs egenhändiga brev. Det är således begripligt, om företaget verkat avskräckande på de flesta enskilda forskare3• Som ett led i arbetet med det sk Carl X Gustaf-projektet har - såsom i annat sammanhang närmare redovisats4 - vid Militär­ historiska avdelningen efter hand upplagts ett numera ganska omfat­ tande "arbetsarkiv", bestående av avskrifter, fotostatkopior och ex­ cerpter av (ur) främst krigshistoriskt viktiga arkivhandlingar från Carl X Gustafs tid. Det torde vara självklart at:t vid urvalet av aktstycken för inför­ livande med arbetsarkivet fasta principer varit svåra att uppställa och följa. Utslagsgivande har ofta fått bli behovet av bekväm tillgång till visst slags källmaterial i och för en aktuell undersökning. En genomgående tanke har emellertid varit att åstadkomma en slutligen komplett samling avskrifter av Carl X Gustafs egenhändiga brev. Motiveringen härför framgår av det i det föregående sagda. Dels rör 8 det sig om ett pnmart källmaterial av central betydelse, dels har materialet hittills blott i ringa utsträckning utnyttjats av forskningen

    1905 and All That: Quebec and the Issue of Chronological Symbolism by John Erik Fossum and David G. Haglund Introduction Norway’s separation from Sweden a century ago took place in a peaceful manner. This is an exception in a world where the breakup of an existing political entity can be, and often is, an extremely conflict-fraught political development. Given the peaceful nature of the process and the convivial relationship that marks the present situation between the Scandinavian neighbours, it is no surprise that Quebec sovereigntists and Canadian academics alike have sometimes turned their gaze to it, with emphasis upon its irenic nature (Young 1995). This emphasis, in turn, can find its way into a more comprehensive argument, to wit that what took place in Scandinavia during the early twentieth century might have an echo in the Canada of the early twenty-first century. It is this argument that we set out to critique in our paper. We hope to accomplish three things in our critique. First, we seek to assess the relevance of the 1905 events for a future Quebec-Canada tango. A couple of critical issues are raised in this regard: one goes to the comparability of cases in a comparative historical context; the other touches upon just how “peaceful” the 1905 process actually was. Second, we bring into the analysis the fundamental issue of “Europe.” Both Sweden as member and Norway as associated nonmember are engulfed in the transformations that have been taking place under the aegis of the European Union. If “Europe” really is to be the apple of the sovereigntists’ eye, then we want to determine under what kind of circumstances may they find that in ostensibly “leaving” Canada, they will not in fact have “left”? In this section of the paper, we therefore examine in turn as possible models for a future Canada-Quebec relationship the European Union, and the special arrangement that Norway has developed with the EU (namely, the European Economic Agreement, or EEA).

    � Monthly journal from the Luleå Biennial 0:- Nr.1 “We Were Traitors of the Nation, They Said” Aug 2018 attack can be seen as the culmination of the preceding years of nationalism, warmongering and hatred against the communists in the re- gion. Its features and planning are remarkable: one of the key agents in the act, Ebbe Hallberg, was state attorney and chief of police in Luleå. Together with a journalist at the conservative newspaper Norrbottens-Kuriren and some army officers, they organised and carried out the bru- tal deed with the aim of silencing dissidents. We will also direct our attention to the history of the Swedish government’s establishment of internment camps for anti-fascists and anti-na- zis during the 1930s and 40s. The largest of the camps was located in the Norrbotten town Stors- ien in the Kalix municipality. Interned here were, among others, members of Flamman’s editorial staff. The camp and the attack overlap in time, 1 sentiment and the destinies they affected. 1 By addressing this dark history, we reflect on Swe- den’s idea of itself and its neutrality. The structure of the human brain defines the limits of what can be a grammatical or a lexical rule of a language. But how a specific language emerges and changes within the biologically given boundaries is a sociohistorical process, and it should be understood and explained as such. The link between history on one hand and the grammar or the lexicon of a language on the other is the use of the language in spoken and written communication, the pro- duction of texts. Through texts history is influenced by language: the language available makes it easier to say some things than others. Through texts the rules of a language are influenced by history: the verbal interaction between people confirms or challenges the linguistic rules in force. This article is about the latter kind of influence or determination. The way we talk is only partly dependent upon current conventions: superordinate maxims of communication makes it possible, practical or necessary to deviate from the norms. What we say - or write - is therefore full of ellipses, expansions (metaphors, expanded meanings of words), borrowings and even errors etc. Some of these deviations or expansions are taken over by other language users and conventionalized as parts of the common system of grammatical and lexical rules. A couple of quite general motive forces lie behind the conventionalization of individual communicative solutions, e.g.
