What diversity of (non-human) life a burgeoning city with three million plus human population is likely to retain? The proof of the pudding is in eating. Here is a gallant attempt to draw a picture of the extant biodiversity of the Pune urban area based on field-work. Enthusiastic collegians under the guidance of their teachers have probed various natural and urban habitats to complete this picture. The wherewithal was provided by Ranwa, a Pune-based NGO deeply interested in the study and conservation of nature. The guest editors for this volume, Prof. Sanjeev Nalavade and Utkarsh Ghate, themselves involved in inspiring this effort have painstakingly edited the available material to give a shape and form that is at once interesting and informative. Hopefully this effort will prove a bench-mark and a useful guide in formulating the future development policies and plans of the Pune urban area. This special double issue is grandly embellished by excellent photographs. Thanks to the contribution made by leading nature photographers of Pune. In this chapter an attempt is made to show how a bicycle enjoys comparative advantage over the means of transport like (1) Scooter - a two-wheeled power driven vehicle (2 ) A. moped - (Luna) a two wheeler light vehicle (3) A Rickshaw - two seater or three seater vehicle (4) A p. M. T. BUS/ and (5) A Car. The above vehicles are chosen for the purpose of comparative cost analysis because they are the alternatives to a bicycle. The following points are taken into consideration for the purpose of comparative cost analysis (1) Initial investment made at the time of purchasing a vehicle. (2 ) The cost of maintenance and repairs* (158) (3) Depreciation of the vehicle» (4) Interest on loan if taken for the purchase of the vehicle. (5) Oil and petrol; and (6) Distance covered (average mileage run) for a particular consumption of oil and petrol. The analysis reveals that the comparative cost advantage enjoyed by a bicycle over the above mentioned means of conveyance is significant and would continue to increase in future.     Chapter I: INTRODUCTION Introduction CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION 1.1 DEFINITION OF ECOTOURISM In 1980s, alternative forms of tourism have attracted the interest of governments, communities and scholars. These were given different names like nature tourism, soft tourism, responsible tourism, green tourism, ecotourism (Schaller, 1999). Among these, the term ecotourism has become prominent, although a consistent definition is by no means found. Most definitions do, however, incorporate concepts associated with sustainable development. Sustainable development attempts were made to integrate economic development with ecological sustainability ( Redclift, 1987) The researchers like Zurick( 1992), Dearden (1991) and Hunter and Green (1995) accepted the definition of ecotourism given by World Commission on Environment and Development. According to them development that meets the needs of the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (WCED, 1987) is known as ecotourism. Many research workers now agreed that ecotourism is a two-way link between tourism and environmental conservation (Valentine, 1993; Cater, 1994). As the understanding of the close relationships between tourism and environmental conservation increased, the researchers are now calling on ecotourism industry to incorporate economic development as a fiindamental element of conservation (West and Brechin, 1991). According to Healy (1988) nature tourism is based directly on the use of natural resources in a relatively undeveloped state, including scenery, topography, water features, vegetation and wildlife. It is also based upon the desire of people to experience nature in their leisure time. Eagles (1995a) proposed that nature-based tourism has at least four sub-markets, differentiated according to the travel motives of the tourists.

A, < •V"s.- Assessment ofEcotourism Potential in Pune district CHAPTER III: ASSESSMENT OF ECOTOURISM POTENTIAL IN PUNE DISTRICT The environmental assessment for ecotourism potential its sustainable development, management and strategies for fixture planning are the crucial factors in ecotourism development. There are many parameters for assaying the environmental impact of ecotourism development e.g. frequency and attendance, location, distance etc. The assessment of ecotourism potential in Pune district was done with seven different parameters of ecotourism potential. The formal and informal assessment and standard tests were used for knowing the ecotourism potential of Pime district. Environmental assessment, in any form, is a necessary component of effective ecotourism development. This assessment should be manageable and used as a guide for instructions, planning and development of ecotourism sites. The assessments should also provide data to measure environmental performance and the effectiveness of planning. Both daily formal and informal assessment and standardized tests must correlate with the standards of development and ecotourism potential. The geographical diversity of Maharashtra state and Pune district provides many opportunities for ecotourism activities. The district like Pune has a very high ecotourism potential. Pune is one of the most important cities of Maharashtra which is aptly called as the Queen of Deccan. Its climate and surrounding natural sites made it as the best district for providing ecotourism facilities.Along with many natural ecotourism sites Pune is surround by several beautiful lakes like Mulshi, Khadakwasala, Katraj ,Bhushi, Valvan , Pashan , Bhougaon etc. These lakes are the best ecotourism sites of Pune district.

Members are informed that the issue of liquor ban on Highways pertains to implementation of Model Policy of the Union Govt under the MV Act thereby seeking removal of “ Retail Liquor Vends “ on National Highways to address the issue of accidents due to drunk driving . The Courts at the initial stage & finally the Supreme Court have implemented the Model Policy which at no time sought removal of Hotels or Restaurants on Highways.
