I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge a number of people and groups who in no small way contribute to the successful operation of the ECA: • Our Life Members, • ECA Executive Members and Office Bearers. Indeed, it would be remiss of me if I did not make special mention of the outstanding contributions of Operations Manager Rod Patterson and Turf and Synthetic Managers Greg McLeod and Michael Bingley, • Club Presidents, Secretaries, Players, Members & Volunteers • Our Umpires Association and all member umpires who are an integral part of the success of our Association. • Cricket Victoria and the VMCU • Local Government Authorities including the Cities of Boroondara, Whitehorse, Manningham, Monash, Stonnington, Knox , Yarra and Maroondah who in fact should be recognised as our largest sponsors/benefactors. • Our sponsors including Kookaburra, My Club First, Bendigo Bank, G I Printing, Cooka Sports Marketing, Australian Sports Camps, Fort Knox Self Storage and Fletchers Real Estate for being the inaugural, and most generous, sponsor of the new Veterans Competition • Premiership winners and particularly Dunstan Premiers - St Kevins OC and Macgibbon Premiers - Boroondara Congratulations to you all. • Individual medal winners and batting and bowling average winners There were a number of highlights during the season, none the least of which was the introduction of the ECA Fletchers Veterans Competition. It is a tribute to the outstanding efforts of Chairman Eugene Fitzwilliam and Secretary Dwayne Rabel and Committee that we had 18 clubs involved fielding a total of 28 teams. Again thank you to Fletchers Real Estate for their generous sponsorship. Our Junior Girls competition went from strength to strength with a huge increase in participation and also the introduction of the Meg Lanning Shield. Well done to our Junior Executive and the many volunteers for their hard work and dedication in ensuring its success. We also welcomed a new club in North Alphington into our LOC Competition. 5 President’s Report The Executive continues to support inter-association competitions through the various age competitions, which are held annually. The work done in all sections from the Under 21 team right down through the junior age groups is acknowledged and greatly appreciated, it gives all our younger players great exposure and opportunity to experience cricket at a higher level and against very skilled opponents. This work often goes unnoticed but is extremely appreciated by all, including those players who take part. The Junior Competition has always been a strength to the ECA and provides a ready made player base for our senior teams. A major responsibility of the association, is to ensure that our junior section is well supported and continues to develop. The Kookaburra T20 Cup competition was again, well supported and I take this opportunity to thank all clubs that competed. Whilst T20 is now firmly established within the ECA cricket calendar for most clubs, we will continue to explore avenues to enhance and improve the competition. It would be remiss not to thank Kookaburra Sport our major and naming rights sponsor for the competition who assist us by way of the provision of prize money and equipment for the competition. During season 2015/2016 across our seniors, juniors and veterans the ECA had a total of 7,225 players playing in ECA matches, including 4,222 players in the seniors, 2972 in the Juniors and 501 in the veterans. I find these figures quite staggering especially comparing our participation numbers to the Box Hill Reporter and Ringwood District Associations. The combined number of players in these competitions total 8,549 compared to the ECA total of 7,225. These statistics together with the introduction of additional competitions are most encouraging and hopefully reflects closely one of our strategic aims that we are able to offer a game of cricket to anyone in the region who wants to play. 6 President’s Report Turf cricket in Melbourne is again in the spotlight with a number of recent developments relating to the operation of the Cricket Victoria Melbourne Metropolitan Turf Cricket Task Force. A geographical split in the VTCA has occurred between the north and the south, as a result the VTCA south clubs will operate as a separate competition under the governance of Cricket Victoria, which appears to be the forerunner of the regional competitions as envisaged by the Cricket Victoria turf task force. Furthermore the turf clubs in the west and north-west of Melbourne have voted to leave their local associations and join the VTCA North competition. As far as the Sub District competition is concerned we are still waiting to hear from Cricket Victoria following a meeting with them and other stakeholders on 16th May. We will keep you updated with any developments and you can be assured that there will not be any strategic decisions made without consultation with all our clubs. Foremost in our thinking is that any future plans or direction must also include both our Synthetic and Junior competitions. On behalf of the Eastern Cricket Association I look forward to your continued support and involvement and take this opportunity to wish you a most successful 2016/2017 season. MIKE SLATTERY President 7 Executive Council Report Season 17 started at the Annual meeting in August 2015 with all clubs returning and with North Alphington joining by submitting a one day team. For this season the competition expanded with the advent of a Veterans Competition, it would be run as an adjunct, similar to the Junior competition with an organising committee lead successfully by Eugene Fitzwilliam. Of course the driving force behind the beginnings of this competition was Michael Bingley and the Executive is appreciative of his involvement to get this import avenue ready so older cricketers can enjoy their former rivalries. At the Annual Meeting, Dennis Butler was inducted as a Life Member of the association. The executive underwent change as Dennis Butler and others stood down with Mike Slattery taking over as President. Richard Barker took on the Vice President role and we welcomed Emily Ellinger as the Communication Manager and I returned as Operations Manager. As usual the cricket season tossed up its share of issues and were resolved. The Kookaburra Twenty/20 final was between STC South Camberwell and Edinburgh with the winner being STC South Camberwell.
