President’s Report

The 2011/12 season was my first as President of the association and may I say from the top a big congratulations and thank you to Rob McKenna for the great job he did over the last three years as President. May I also say that we are fortunate that Rob has decided to continue as a valued member of the committee.

To all the players, I hope you all enjoyed your cricket this past season, by having fun, playing with your mates and hopefully improving your skills along the way!

Congratulations to all the award winners including premiership winning teams, individual and representative winners.

As we all know, our great game could not happen without the vast number of volunteers. Firstly, to all the committee members of each club who give their time freely each season who plan and organise registration days, compile the rego data, arrange the teams, appoint coaches and managers and allocate training days and make sure the season runs smoothly, thank you so much for your time and dedication.

Secondly, thank you to all the mums & dads, nans & pops, aunts & uncles and extended families who all played various roles during the season, as coaches and managers, umpires, scorers, training, warming up the players before a game, transporting players and even coffee runs.

Without your support, it would be impossible for our boys and girls to play cricket. So thank you all!

Overall player numbers have plateaued compared to the last couple of seasons and we are working hard with Cricket NSW to increase participation on the peninsula, through targeted local advertising and school visits. These strategies will enable us to grow our numbers in the grass roots areas such as In2Cricket & Kanga cricket to form a solid base for the future.

On the representative front, we welcomed a new Chairperson Shane Moran, who with his committee continued on the great work done by Ross Trewartha who stepped down last year.

As we know there is a great deal of preparation and hard work behind the scenes that goes in to making this programme successful and allowing our players the opportunity to experience this level of cricket. So many thanks to all on the Rep committee for their contribution.

The overall group of boys had an improved season compared to previous seasons with a number of sides reaching Semi-Final and Final stages and the U13 Presidents Cup team winning the DCA T20 carnival. I’d also like to acknowledge the outstanding achievement of Ross Trewartha (U15DCA) being named “DCA Coach of the Year 2011/12”. Congratulations to all.

May I also take this opportunity to congratulate all the players in the way they represented the Manly Warringah District and how they conducted themselves both on and off the field. This year we saw the introduction of the “Pathway programme”, which allows junior players (U15’s and U16’s) to be invited to trial at senior level and give them a clear path to assist them in playing cricket at the highest level in our district. The Manly Warringah district is very proud to be leading the way with this initiative and is very excited about the future and the extended opportunities and experience it will give to our young players coming through.

We are very fortunate that representatives from each of the cricketing bodies (Manly Warringah Cricket Association, Warringah Shires Cricket Club, Manly Warringah District Cricket Club and the Manly Warringah Junior Cricket Association) who are involved are all united and passionate about this fantastic programme. Thank you and special thanks to Greg Boyer, our driver and facilitator.

This year you all would have seen the continued improvement and replacement of pitches. This is an absolute priority of the Association to get this work done. As you would have noticed we have replaced pitches that are wider and longer, to give all cricketers the best playing conditions possible.

Over the last two years we have replaced 16 pitches in the Warringah area and currently working with Manly and Pittwater councils to continue the work.

May I take this opportunity to thank Tony Pecar and Rob McKenna from the Association committee and David Sheedy (president of MWCA – senior’s afternoon cricket) who are working with councils to make this happen. Great effort guys and I’m sure much appreciated by everyone!

It is with sadness that I report the passing of Peter Tasker, an icon of our Manly Warringah cricketing family. Peter spent many years serving our cricketing community in so many ways, but will be remembered mostly for his outstanding contributions to umpiring.

To Peter’s wife Rae and the extended family, our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Finally a big thank you to all the MWJCA committee who all worked so hard this year, especially our VP Ross Denny, Competition Secretary Vicki Carden, new Treasurer Cathy Hurditch and finally our Secretary Sharon Porter who has put in an enormous effort as usual to make this Association run so smoothly. Having said that, after 3 years, Sharon has decided to step down and spend more time with her family. Thank you so much Sharon for your hard work, support and dedication!

May I also thank all the club delegates for their attendance at our monthly meetings and more importantly for their input to make this Association more pro-active.

Look forward to seeing you all next season!

Danny LeMoy

Secretary’s Report

Season 2011/12 was my third and final season as Secretary of MWJCA. During the year I have:  Maintained accurate minutes and records for the association.  Dealt with all correspondence on behalf of the association, including regular communication with Cricket NSW, Warringah Council, as well as the wider Northern Beaches cricket community.  Organised regular committee meetings.  Put together a comprehensive Annual Report which includes details of all Saturday morning competitions, representative team reports, records, winning teams etc.  Organised the annual presentation evening

On behalf of MWJCA and all players, I take this opportunity to thank Vicki Carden for continuing in the role of Competition Secretary for another season. This is a huge role, and as in previous years, Vicki has juggled ground availability and unpredictable weather in 2011/12, to ensure that our competition has been run with great efficiency. Vicki’s hard work and dedication to MWJCA are very much appreciated.

Welcome and thanks to Cathy Hurditch who came on board as Treasurer this season. The financial position of the association continues to strengthen, as a consequence of the prudent management of MWJCA by the committee.

You may have noticed that the MWJCA website is looking smarter this year. This is down to the great work of our ‘Webmasters’, Phill and Sarah Edwards, who joined the committee in 2011. Thanks Phill and Sarah, for all of your hard work.

Further thanks to the small but dedicated MWJCA committee, made up of delegates from all of the clubs. All attend monthly association meetings and work tirelessly for the good of all of our children.

Thank you to all who have helped and supported me over the course of the last three years. I have had the good fortune to meet many wonderful people who participate in our very special cricket community on the Northern Beaches. I hand over the secretarial baton to the safe hands of Denise Gullick. Please make Denise warmly welcome.

Sharon Porter Secretary, 2009/10, 2010/11 & 2011/12

The Eric Palmer Bat Award

Since 1966 this prestigious award has been presented to an outstanding performer in the Saturday morning competition. Over the years, many winners have gone on to play grade cricket. The Executives takes into account a cricketer’s performance both on and off the field, his efforts in the Saturday morning competition, his availability and efforts in the District Representative games, and achievements in cricket outside our competition.

We are pleased to announce that this year’s Eric Palmer Bat Award winner is Michael Balzan from SCECGS Cricket Club.

REPRESENTATIVE TEAM REPORTS 2011/12

Representative Overview from the Rep Chairman – Season Report 2011/12

The Manly Warringah Junior Cricket Association’s Representative Cricket program is very demanding and requires dedication, teamwork and a positive attitude. Representing Manly at Rep cricket is the highlight of the boys’ junior days – especially as it involves playing in possibly the toughest and most demanding junior cricket competition in Australia.

The 2011/12 season consolidated the expansion of the junior cricket representative programme on the Northern Beaches. With the help of a large number of dedicated people, both on and off the Rep Committee, the programme continued the development of two teams in each age group from the Under 11s through to the Under 16s. Special thanks must go to the commitment from our coaches this year in delivering an outstanding effort for Manly Reps, not only in their ability, but also in the time spent working with their squads and teams. There were record numbers of boys who came to the selection trials in February and March 2011 and from this over 175 boys were part of the Manly Rep programme during 2011/12.

We had 12 teams compete, six in the main NSW Cricket DCA competition and a further six in the Presidents Cup development competitions. Teams also represented Manly in various country carnivals and T20 competitions. Whilst all of our teams competed strongly, special highlights were the Under 16s DCA side (which had three wins and only one loss in the rounds before unfortunately having a washout in the qualifying final), the Under 15s DCA side (which had four straight wins in the rounds, lost the qualifying final before being washed out in the semi-final), and the U15s Presidents Cup side which had three straight wins and three washouts).

Special congratulations to our Under 13s Presidents Cup side which won the 2011/12 DCA T/20 Carnival and to our Under 12s DCA team which made the Grand-Final of the Lismore Country Carnival. Most other teams competed strongly throughout the season and were on the verge of semi-finals.

To those boys who are now over 16, we wish you well in your cricketing future, and to those parents who have lived through a number of seasons, we thank you for your dedication in helping your sons play this great game.

To the dedicated group of coaches who put in countless hours of planning and preparation, as well as just being there each week for training and matches on Sundays, a huge thanks. In addition to those wonderful parents who volunteered to manage teams, only support from people like you ensure that many tasks get done, and teams run smoothly. Your contribution to the community of Manly rep cricket is immense and invaluable.

To our major sponsor NAB, who through James Carter and Peter Jones, gave a substantial donation to the Manly Rep programme, we give a great thanks and look forward to a continuing relationship over coming seasons. Thanks to Simon Couch at Chiropractic Solutions and Dean Gilchrist at SportsPro, for their continued support and sponsorship of the Manly juniors this season. Also thanks to the Sydney Sixers organisation for providing Sixers memberships to each of our Manly junior rep players.

Big thanks to Danny Lemoy, Ross Denny and Sharon Porter, as well as the general junior committee, for your support during the season.

To my friends on the hard working Rep committee, thanks for your wonderful support to me over the past year as Chairman.

I look forward to working with the Rep Committee in continuing to enhance the spirit of cricket within the Manly Warringah community and to make it another great season for the Manly Rep Juniors in 2012/13.

Dr Shane Moran MWJCA Rep Chairman

MWJCA 2011/2012 Season Report Under 11 DCA J.H. Creak Shield & President’s Cup Squads

It was Aug 2011, a group of 24 young boys came together for the first time to be part of what was going to be a special season. For many of the boys, this was the first taste of representative cricket, many having only ever played with soft balls and for a couple of hours on a Saturday morning. It was simply amazing to see such eagerness and a true willingness to learn and respect the game.

August was also a time for the group to get to know one another in what we all hope will be many years of friendship through this wonderful game of cricket. Our aim at the very start of the season was to convert these young boys into gentlemen who just happened to play good cricket. Our 5 year goal is to hopefully transform these young blokes, who have such raw enthusiasm and passion into a skilled group which will play for Manly in the right spirit, with great passion whilst respecting the game and those around them. We have only just taken the first few steps…..

August was also a time for the group of coaches to get to know one another. I was truly blessed to have been mentored by two of the NSW’s and Australia’s legends of the game. Mike Pawley was simply outstanding as a coach and mentor for the boys. His passion and caring nature had an immediate bond with the group. Mike is a true gentleman and a person who cares deeply for cricket and the Manly district. His years of knowledge, his man management skills and his caring nature had all of the boys listening intently. Thank you my friend! I too have learnt greatly from you.

The group was also honoured to be mentored by a true legend of the game, Grahame Thomas. Grahame was coached and played with many of legends of the game, names such as Bob Simpson, Richie Benaud, Gary Sobers but to name a few. His stories about Donald Bradman had the kids simply gob smacked. This most unassuming of men was simply a fantastic part of the coaching group. The stories, his presence, but above all, his keen interest in seeing the boys smile whilst playing was extremely comforting for everyone involved. Grahame, like Mike are true gentlemen and have been a pleasure to work with. Thank you.

We were also blessed to be supported by a wonderful group of parents, grand parents, brothers, sisters and friends. A group made up of over 70 supporters. I dearly hope that you all enjoyed the experience. We started the year by stressing the need to create a Manly Family, an environment which provided all of the boys with a safe haven to enjoy the game without the heavy burden of having to win games at all costs. I was most pleased to see every single member of the family embrace not only their own son, but every single boy playing. The environment you all helped to create will encourage your young bloke to keep coming back and that is how we all win! I also hope you got to make some new friendships along the way and I count you all as my extended family. Thank you.

There was also some fantastic help along the way. Iain Hogg was a tremendous team manager who provided great support to the team and has become a good mate. Thank you.

Michael Fountain and Graham Scheffers, both of whom helped to coach the President Cup teams. Penny Fountain managed the President Cup team, thank you.

There was also tremendous support by many parents who helped with lunches, tours, photos, barbeques, and afternoon teas. You all know who you are. Thank you.

We had 4 simple goals this year,

1) Try your very best, no matter the result 2) What you do at training is what you will reflect in the game 3) Respect and encourage your team mates 4) Most importantly, have fun!

I am really proud of the boys for adhering to these simple yet effective goals. They were the cornerstone of our behaviours and I congratulate all of them for staying true to them.

There were many highlights throughout the year, many of which actually didn’t involve results on the ground;

 The guard of honour the boys created for Peter Tasker, a long serving umpire in Manly who unfortunately passed away not long ago. Truly emotional.  The smiles on the boys faces when training with their big buddies on Manly Oval.  The joy of playing some wonderful team games at the end of each training session.  Running bare foot on the beach out front of Mike’s place.  The training session at the SCG, where the “big blokes” play.  The individual moments of brilliance, either during the game or at training where someone would better their own personal best. Fantastic stuff.  The unbridled joy of hitting the afternoon tea table after an arduous morning in the field.  The unexpected catch, wicket or boundary from someone you least expected it from.

All special moments which we will all treasure in our own unique ways.

Sometimes we forget that these young blokes are just 10 or 11 years of age. They often showed maturity well beyond their years. Everyone should be proud of them as they become “gentlemen who play good, competitive cricket”. Well done boys.

On behalf of Mike, Grahame and I, we would like to thank everyone for their support and commitment throughout the year.

Steve Caproni Squad Coach, Under 11s 2011/2012.

MWJCA 2011/2012 Season Report DCA Arch Cawsey Shield – Under 12

Overall the Manly boys had a reasonably successful season winning seven of their 12 matches. The team failed to make the DCA semi finals but were Grand Finalists in the Lismore Country Carnival. Throughout the season the boys gave their best, continued to develop their skills and maintained their enthusiasm and should be commended for this.

The Manly Under 12 Arch Cawsey Shield team was made up of the following players: Aiden Bariol, Tom Braund, Matthew Brewster, Hayden Brown, Jack Edwards, MacKenzie Green, Ned Hole, Jack McKenna, Matthew Moran, Jacob O’Sullivan, Isaiah Vumbaca and Jadon Wilson. The team was coached by Aidan Baker and managed by Dr Shane Moran. The squad for the Lismore Country Carnival also included Jonah Anderson and Daniel Ward and was coached by Paul O’Sullivan with the assistance of Roy Vumbaca and Phil Edwards.

There were a number of team highlights during the season:  The game against Inner West Harbour when we only reached a modest total of 96 on a very wet and grassy outfield. Inner West Harbour reached the target in the 50th over with 9 wickets down. The boys batted sensibly to craft as many runs as possible and bowled and fielded magnificently. They never gave up and nearly pulled off a very unlikely victory.

 The game against Hornsby where we batted through numerous stoppages (including lightning and rain storms), on a very wet pitch to get within 17 runs of victory.

 The game against Sutherland where we were able to defend a very modest total of only 95 runs then bowl Sutherland out for 91. This was the first defeat ever for this Sutherland team – and a great result for Manly in defeating the 2011/12 Championship side.

 Being undefeated throughout the Rounds and Semi Final to make it through to the Grand Final of the Lismore Country Carnival. Batting first on a variable turf pitch at the famous Oakes Oval in Lismore, the team fought hard before going down to the strong Arch Cawsey Shield Premiership side, Central Coast.

The boys were supported throughout the season by a wonderful group of parents and siblings, including the trip to Lisomore which also involved significant commitments from all of the families involved.

The 2011/12 MWJCA U13 DCA WS Gee Shield team did fantastically well in the regular rep season. After being well beaten by Illawarra in the first round, the boys rallied to win the next 2 matches convincingly and then lost the remaining two matches by the narrowest of margins. We ended up coming third on quotient. Two players, Harry Brock and Jack Pickering joined the team this season due to having outstanding performances in the 2010/11 Presidents Cup season. Both Harry and Jack were great assets and the team really valued their contribution in all aspects of the game.

Performances: Now that the boys were another year older, they were much more mature about how they approached each game. With skill levels up from last season as well as their motivation, enthusiasm and seriousness high, each and every player was more competitive in all aspects of the game this season.

Batting: Our batting this year was more consistent and competitive. All of our batsmen were able to build partnerships more often this year and these were reflected in the results. Our top performing batsmen are listed below with Tully Moffat topping the performance with a fantastic batting average of 40.33. He made a fantastic and gritty 81 , with other wonderful half centuries from both Max Jolley and Alex Bain. Both Jack Pickering and Aaron Stevens often got our innings back on track with some solid performances in the middle order. The most improved batsmen for the season would have to be Max Jolley. He has transpired from being number 9 or 10 batsmen in the previous season to a very confident and stylish opening batsman this season and often got our innings going well. Bowling: Our bowling was very successful and deadly this year. All of our bowlers in the main bowled very good line and length and we were able to restrict opponent’s totals to achievable targets. We had a suite of bowlers who just about covered the range of bowling styles and inflicted a lot of damage to opposing sides. We had the luxury of two leg spinners; Harry Brock and Daniel Watt who just continuously bamboozled batsmen with their spin and change of pace. We also had lethal pace bowlers in Ned McDermott Healey and Joel Wood who had many batsmen rearing up on the back foot with terror in their faces. Swing bowlers Aaron Stevens and Max Jolley swung the ball beautifully to beat the bat over and over again. Our top performing bowler for the 2011 season was Harry Brock taking 5 wickets for 99 runs with best figures of 2/10. He was ably supported by his team mates listed below. Fielding: Our achievements in the field were superb this year. Bowlers were assured time and time again that each ball they bowled they knew they were going to be well supported in the field. Josh Tighe was our top performing fielder this season. His agility in the field was exceptional bagging some of the most amazing catches, 7 in total. He was supported by 8 other team mates who in all bagged a staggering 20 catches in total. Both Josh and Max managed 3 catches each in a match. Will Ackhurst’s form and agility behind the stumps was something to see and who at times looked as if he should have been selected in the Australian Gymnastics team, the way he threw his body everywhere to prevent extra runs. A mention should go to Ellis Raymond who stood in as our second keeper this season and performed exceptionally well behind the stumps. He managed to bag 2 catch behinds, 1 stumping and 1 run out assist.

Report from the Ballina Carnival 2 – 6 January 2012 After a successful regular 2011 DCA season where the MWJCA U/13 WS Gee Shield team placed third in our pool we travelled to Ballina for the Ballina Carnival which was held 2 -6 January 2012. The weather was great and the boys enjoyed their most successful tour in three years.

The Carnival comprised a total of 16 teams from both NSW and Queensland. We won two out of our first three 50 over matches which qualified us for the semi finals. We were beaten by Central Coast in our first semifinal. We played off for third place against Brisbane North but they just they just beat us reaching our score with three balls remaining in our final over leaving us to finish fourth overall.

Achievements Three of our boys came away with major awards from the carnival which reflected how well we competed and were respected by opposition teams.  Joel Wood picked up two Man of the Match awards.  Will Ackhurst our wicket keeper picked up the Fielding Award with 7 Catches and 2 Stumpings and 2 Runouts (unassisted)  Harry Brock picking up the Bowling Award taking 12 wickets for 95 runs at an average of 7.92 with best figures of 3/7. Well done boys a great season, it is both enjoyable and rewarding helping you all in this great game of cricket. We were competitive in all games that we played and with a bit of luck we could have been in the mix at the business end of the season. The Ballina carnival was fantastic thank you to all that travelled that far to play, help and support the team. In the couple of games that we were beaten this season the teams were more focused and turned on from ball 1 to the last ball, they new where to field and how to react when pressure was on, if we can learn from that lesson you boys will be a very formidable team. Play hard, play to win and enjoy yourselves guys.

Darryl, Cathy and I we would very much like to express our thanks to all of our families (parents, grandparents and siblings) who supported the boys and us greatly throughout the season. A thank you also to Lachie and Matthew Morley who filled in and played for us this season. Also a special thank you to Cathy, who did a wonderful job as manager and for all the behind the scenes work in keeping us all organised and informed. Ian Raymond and Darryl Stevens Coaches

MWJCA 2011/2012 Season Report DCA Harold Moore Shield – Under 14

Team: Jake Carden (captain), Byron Leach (captain), Glyn Archer, Matthew Brock, William Denny, Joseph Graham, Theo Guichon, Hayden Gullick, Nick Hidas, Liam Mason, Wilson Moore, Abhijeet Virdi, Kieren Nixon (Newcastle carnival) Coach: Ross Denny Manager: Denise Gullick Player of the Year: Jake Carden

This was a season where we set specific goals to improve the team in a number of areas after a few lean seasons where the players had not been able to record a DCA victory in 2 years. With only one DCA batting innings over 100 in the 2010/11 season, one key focus in 2011/12 was to improve the batting in a number of areas. Starting in the pre-season we worked on technical and mental aspects of batting, continuing this into the season with match-simulated pressure tests. Ultimately the team scored 708 runs in the DCA season, significantly up from the 374 runs in 2010/11. In addition to this, the players continually showed improvement as a team as the season progressed, notching up their first victory in 2 years.

The team’s continuous improvement was evident when we met Sutherland away in Round 4. Sutherland was a very strong team who ultimately went on to be winners of the U14 DCA competition. Whilst we ultimately went down to them, it was acknowledged that we had provided them with the toughest game they had played that season so far. It was also where Jake Carden scored his maiden DCA half century, finally showing his quality as a batsman, scoring runs when it counted.

The following week in Round 5 we achieved the goal of registering the team’s first DCA win in 2 years, chasing down Hawkesbury’s total of 186 with Jake registering a fine knock of 60 including a crucial partnership of 70 with Theo Guichon. Our final score of 8/196 was the team’s highest total in a DCA fixture.

On an individual basis, Jake Carden’s batting was a highlight registering two half centuries in the DCA season and topping the batting aggregate and average for the team. Special mention also to Joe Graham, taking on the role of opener and doing a great job providing solid foundations and only being narrowly behind Jake statistically. Nick Hidas made a number of very promising starts with his powerful batting and look forward to seeing Nick turn those into big scores in future seasons. Theo Guichon and Wilson Moore as representative debutants showed plenty of promise, making some good starts with the bat and will be improved cricketers for the experience in rep cricket. Matthew Brock was someone who I felt given the opportunity could really develop on the batting front. By the time we got to the Newcastle carnival Matt hit his straps and topped the team batting averages/aggregate including a fine half century against Central Coast.

On the bowling front, our opening and first change pace attack of Jake Carden/William Denny and Glyn Archer/Byron Leach proved to be effective again, taking the bulk of the season wickets with Byron and Will topping our bowling averages. Special mention to Glyn who bowled so consistently well all season and probably helped his partners at the other end pick up wickets due to the pressure he put on the opposition at his end. Abhijeet Virdi was used as a change swing bowler this season and proved quite effective. Our spin combination of Matthew Brock and Liam Mason bowled well but proved most dangerous on the turf wickets used in the Newcastle carnival. Against Parramatta, they did a lot of damage taking 6 wickets between them, having the batsmen in all sorts of problems.

Well done to Hayden Gullick for once again performing all the wicket keeping duties throughout the DCA season. He got a break from keeping on the Newcastle tour and managed to get a bowl, taking wickets along the way.

After the DCA season concluded, the team travelled to Newcastle in January to participate in the Graeme Malcolm Shield where we won 3 out of 5 matches against solid opposition, coming second in our pool and narrowly missing the finals on quotient. Thanks also to Kieren Nixon who joined the team for the carnival and did a great job with bat and ball.

Winning 4 of our last 6 matches across the DCA/Newcastle season combined gave the boys greater confidence of their ability to start competing with the best of the DCA teams. Our last match of the season at Newcastle was against Parramatta, the same team who we had played and been beaten by in DCA Round 1, who ultimately went on to play in the finals. At Newcastle, the match went down to the wire and we almost won it, giving Parramatta a bit of a shock and gently reminding the boys that with hard work and effort they can definitely compete with the best teams.

I would like to particularly thank Denise Gullick for managing the team and providing me with such efficient and complete scorebooks each week. Special thanks also to Steve Carden who was a tower of strength at training and providing me able assistance each week. Also thanks to Danny LeMoy who was our head selector for the age group and provided great help in the pre-season training. Finally, a thank-you to our wonderful group of parents, who supported both me and the players so well during the season, including the trip to Newcastle, which also involved a significant financial commitment. MWJCA 2011/2012 Season Report DCA E.G. Weblin Shield – Under 15

THE MIKE PAWLEY REPRESENTATIVE AWARD for the most outstanding junior representative team of the season

The Under 15 DCA team finished the preliminary rounds undefeated, ranked 2nd overall.

Due to weather and other circumstances, we were forced to play the qualifying final away, which we lost, however we still qualified for the semi-final. This match was washed out, thus eliminating us.

The final was eventually washed out also.

In Under 13s, this team moved from one of the bottom teams to the top half of the competition. In Under 14s they missed the finals on quotient however, this season they stamped themselves as a genuine contender for the title. This entire age group is well blessed with talent, dedication, character, humour and camaraderie. In addition the coaching and management group, as well as the parents and supporters, provide a wonderful environment, which allows these boys to enjoy their cricket, and perform to a high level. The DCA bowling and fielding was sensational in all games, with all bowlers doing the job each week, building pressure and taking wickets. While never quite dominant, the batting was still consistent enough for us to win all our preliminary games The Presidents Cup team was undefeated during their competition, also finishing 2nd overall on quotient.

So in total, 11 games were played by this age group, with only 1 loss. This is a testament to the qualities of this playing group, which I’ve mentioned above.

Onwards and upwards for 2012/13 Watson shield, and Green Shield teams. We look forward to watching these boys progress through Under 16s and beyond. To Bruce Wickham, John Parkinson, Brian Jones, Tom Kelly and David Gainsford, thanks for the huge effort and support you put into this age group, as well as what you all do for cricket on the Northern Beaches in general.

To all the parents, what a wonderful group we have. Sundays is a long day, but jeez we have a good time ! I feel lucky to have gotten to know so many of you over the years. Only 1 more year of junior reps to go…let’s make it a good one !

Cheers Ross Round by round match reports are below. These were written at the time of each match

Round 1 – bye Round 2 v Sutherland A great team effort with all boys contributing to a good solid win. A strong all-round bowling effort had Sutherland all out for 151, (Sam Gainsford 3-25, Matt Levene 2-21, Jack Shepherd 2-22). After being 2-100 (James McClintock 41, Adam McCormick 20), Manly wobbled to 6-110 before Matt Levene (40no) got us home. Round 3 v Newcastle A great team effort again, with all boys contributing to another strong win. Another good all-round bowling effort had Newcastle pegged back all day, reaching 9-154 from their 60 overs. (Jack Shepherd 3-29, Matt Levene 2-6, Luke Parkinson 2-22). After being 0-29 from 16 overs, a massive thunderstorm reduced the target to 78 from 30 overs, which we achieved for the loss of 4 wickets, batting on to 5-90 from the allotted 30 overs. (Matt Levene 31, Sam Gainsford 28, Ben Wickham 19). Happy days ! Round 4 v Fairfield Liverpool A powerful, dominant performance, the best ever by this team ever. Zach Trewartha (3-26), and Matt Levene (1-36) ripped the heart out of their top order. Fairfield never recovered as we kept our foot on their throat, with Ben Schimek (1-21), Sam Gainsford (1-8 from 12 overs) and Damon Steel (1-8 from 6 overs) turning the screws as they limped to 7-141. In reply, we passed them 1 down (Ben Wickham 16), with 20 overs to spare as Sam Gainsford (76no) and Jake Ellis (39no) applied the finishing touches. Round 5 v Canterbury-Wests Sent in, batting proved difficult on a slowish wicket. After being 3-24, a gutsy 58 from James McClintock, was the backbone for 2 x 50 partnerships, firstly with Jake Ellis (28) and then Matt Levene (29). Further solid lower order contributions from Damon Steel (19no) and Ben Schimek (14), saw us reach 9-194 off our 60 overs. Canterbury were doing it nicely at 0-46 off 15 overs before 2 wickets in the same over from Sam Gainsford (2-11), combined with tight bowling from Luke Parkinson (2-27) and Damon Steel (1-12) saw them lose their momentum. Jack Shepherd (3-23) ripped their middle order apart and soon it was all over, as they crumbled for 102 all out. The team is playing with great character, teamwork and ability, and 4 wins plus a bye, puts us top of our group and 2nd overall, going into the finals. Qualifying final v South Eastern Despite being rolled for 89, we had South Eastern, the strongest batting team in the competition, 6 wickets down when they passed us. Semi final v Hornsby We were 5-58 before the rain came. No more balls were bowled.

MWJCA 2011/2012 Season Report DCA C.S. Watson Shield – Under 16

Game 1 against Newcastle at Kahibah Park The Watson Shield boys who travelled to Kahibah Oval on Rugby World Cup Final day to Charlestown for their first match, did really well to keep the hosts down to 2-109 off 47 overs but the last few overs runs leaked all over the field and they closed at 7-188, which was probably 30 more runs than it should have been. Sadly despite a solid 42 by opener Hamish Ferguson, and two crucial run outs, the Manly boys failed to pass 130 and were all out, well short of the target. Ben Falconer took 2-29 off 10 overs but Sam Hole’s 12 over spell with 0-25 was the highlight and was noted by the Newcastle Coach. However many lessons were learned from this excursion, both within the team and outside it which were to prove beneficial later in the tournament. Game 2 – Sutherland at Mike Pawley Oval After a disappointing effort against Newcastle the Under 16 Watson Shield boys were determined to show the coach that they were made of better stuff and had the visitors from the Shire in huge problems at 7-39, but the Sharks rallied and posted a reasonable soccer of 109. Manly passed them with the loss of two wickets thanks to solid innings’ by Hole 45 not and Boyer 32 not out after Ben Falconer with some aggressive left arm pace (3-24) and Josh Wigney (2-13) had destroyed their top order. A version of the Manly and Warringah Song was sung with some relief. Game 3 - A hot day at Penrith’s Cook Park A large oval in the lee of the Blue Mountains was the next venue for the Watson Shield side. On a wicket that appeared damp Manly inserted the hosts who started well but after drinks fell away to a fine spell of bowling by Matt Cole (4-22) and never recovered and were all out for 123. Hamish Ferguson once again led from the front (47) losing partner Griffiths early and then Sam Hole to a bizarre run out but managed to find a partnership with Captain Boyer. Then the run rate suddenly dropped dramatically during a spell of 10 overs where only 12 runs were scored and a degree of panic set in. Fortunately the tenacity missing from the Newcastle game was there in spades with Jack Garay (22*) and Ben Falconer (16*) finishing off the match with only balls to spare. The boys sang the song with gusto this day. Game 4 - Northern Districts at Manly Oval The boys were excited to be playing on the lovely Manly Oval. Batting first was a luxury after the two tight run chases in the previous rounds and even though ND’s came to our home ground with a poor record they managed to cause shock waves when both our openers and Sam Hole were back in the sheds with the score on 3- 11. Enter James Boyer, always there when a crisis threatens and he and Jimmy Crombie (54) put on 140 for the 4th wicket with Boyer going on to score his maiden century at his “home of cricket”. He was joined by Matt Cole who was in a rush and hit a 20 ball half century before going on to post his first three figure score at this Oval. Manly’s final score of 334 was always going to be too great for the visitors and it was no surprise when they capitulated for just under 150. After the early morning crisis, a win by that margin was quite amazing. The Watson Shield boys rounded off the last week (a bye) by playing a 35 over friendly at Joey’s and scored 199 off the allotted overs with Joey’s only making 102 off the same number of overs. Manly Warringah Junior Representative teams from the Under 16’s Watson Shield and Under 15’s Weblin Shield DCA sides both reached the Quarter Finals of their respective Divisions. This was an exciting prospect for Junior cricket in this district as few people can recall a time when two of the older Junior DCA Representative sides have made it to the Final stages of these competitions. Sadly rain was to destroy our chances of progressing further. It gave me immense pleasure looking after these wonderful lads again this summer and to have spent the last two summers helping these fellas grow in their cricket skills is something that I shall remember for a long time. It is always hard to leave players out of any team and this competition was no different but I hope that those guys who missed out this year will work harder to improve their games net summer in the Pathway Program. The level of improvement this summer was remarkable and the ownership that each player took on his shoulders was a delight to see. Thanks to the parents for all their help and superb teas and especially Ian Ferguson for his hard work as Manager. Also to our scorer Donny Dollars who carried on after a tough day at Penrith. The Best Batsman was James Boyer with 173 runs at an average of 57. I want to add that James’ improvement as a Captain and leader has been superb and the maturity with which he approached all aspects of the game and was prepared to make tough decisions with bowling changes when he had to was indicative of his development. The Best Bowler was James Pearce with 7 wickets at 12.71. This is remarkable since James won the bowling last year as a seamer; this year he made the difficult change to off spin and equipped himself well. I would like to mention Ben Falconer who has improved leaps and bounds this summer with very steady and accurate bowling and has become a reliable batsman who has reinvented himself in the lower middle order. Ben was voted the Player’s Player by the team and the coach which is indicative of the high regard his team holds him in. Thus the Player of the Year AWARD goes to a most deserving Ben Falconer. This team’s bowling was first rate throughout the tournament and only the batting at times lacked cohesion; the game against Newcastle was disappointing but the players showed that they could dig in and learn the lessons. The tough win at Penrith was an example of that. Simon Lyon, Manly Watson Shield Coach 2011-12

MWJCA 2011/2012 Season Report President’s Cup – Under 12

This cricket season was a tough season for boys of the U12 Presidents Cup. Most games were played travelling to alternate grounds and with the constant chance of rain. All in all 2 games were washed out and 2 games were rescheduled to alternate ovals as rain created havoc, and last minute re organisation. However, apart from the rain, the boys had an infectious enthusiasm to play all games with intensity and keenness. Although not a fruitful season of wins, 2 wins in total, the boys learnt some valuable skills and team bonding experience that will set them ready for the next season, as well for beyond. There were a couple of outstanding performers. Dan Ward rallied the troupes as captain and mostly kept a tight ship on the field. As wicket keeper he was close in and always encouraging the boys to stay focused. Other members that had a good result for the season would be Nick Osbourne and Jonah Anderson. These two, when their eye was in could get a good score going. Finlay and Dan also had a couple of good innings with the bat. Matt Fogarty usually took the opening at the crease and faced up to many a fast ball. Although not an easy task, he performed well and mostly held his ground. Our bowling too, had some great results to mention. Mathis opened our campaign on the field. He would push the envelope and results show that he was good for a couple of wickets. A fair effort against some of the associations better batters. Lochie would also open and once he got his line and length was quite hard to put away. Shahil usually followed up and too earned some mighty wickets to help the team. Jack Stevo, forever the encouraging voice on the field and Meet, the joker of the crowd, all offered up great bowling spells. Highlight of the bowling was Nick Corcoran, who dazzled many with his leg spin. Unfortunately, Jack Worland missed most of our games due to a broken arm. He returned to prove his place for one of our last games and contributed mightily. Whilst Jack was out we had two players that pitched in and helped show that Manly was a worthy opponent. Sam Callow and Mitchell Beach both played extremely well as guest. Mitchell’s one and only game saw him pickup a Caught and Bowl, which will be a memory to keep. Gus Worland, our coach, championed the coaching duties. Not always the easiest of tasks as minds and effort wonder. But Gus’s encouragement and enthusiasm always lifted the boys. He expected a certain amount of effort from the boys and they knew if they were not pulling their weight. Gus is a great motivator and will help these boys in the future seasons As the manager this team of boys encouraged me, although a lot of ‘luck’ did not go their way. I was always impressed with attitude. I do think the boys could maybe look a little deeper and ask themselves how much they want to win, and I think we would see a lifted improvement. But that is for next season…. Well done. A huge thanks to the parents of the boys, Gus and I could not have wished for better support. It was a pleasure spending time as a Presidents Cup unit and who will forget our 2 father v son matches...... With the dads winning game 2 and being cup holders!!! Wonderful memories!!!

Twenty20 Won Competition! This season was one to remember for the U13’s IDCA, taking out the Twenty20 competition in spectacular fashion. The super over semi-final win against Penrith was one that players, parents, coaches and spectators will never forget. The boys were also leading the 50 over competition into the last two rounds and should have probably won it as well had rain not affected training and match preparation.

The U13 IDCA team is a great unit, whose players know each other well, encourage one another in the good and bad times and have a lot of fun playing the game. The results this year are a direct result of the support of parents who are always willing to help out with coaching, management and catering tasks but also as a consequence of the assistance we have received at times from elite coaches. Well done Manly Junior Rep Cricket- please keep this assistance ongoing.

Compared to last year our players are all stronger and technically better but our best player has to be Max Sinclair, who in his first year of reps scored the most runs and terrorised opposition batsmen with some quick bowling. Max is well-deserving of this award and also showed the best example of sportsmanship when, after being dismissed for ‘not many’, walked the boundary to shake the hand and congratulate the bowler who had returned to 3rd man after taking his 5th for the innings.

I would like to leave you with a summary (written by our manager Sue-Ellen Morley) of the final day’s cricket at the Twenty20 competition:

The final day unfolded as follows:

Match 1 (semifinal) - Our first match against Penrith was extremely close and ended with a tie - 105 runs to each team. This outcome then resulted in a ‘super over playoff’.

Could it get any more tense and, as someone commented "you would pay good money to see this".

After loads of positive encouragement and support from the parents, the boys were under immense pressure but they played out the super over to victory which meant we went into the final to play off against Central Coast. Match 2 (final) - We won the toss, elected to field first with the boys all performing exceptionally well to keep Central Coast to a total of 106.

Our turn to bat and we excelled once more with quite a few 6's and 4's assisting in building up our score steadily.

The end result was we needed 2 runs off 12 balls and we did it with 10 balls remaining! It was a roller coaster ride full of emotions and I don't think we have ever witnessed such an extraordinary set of circumstances which the boys faced and succeeded. Matt Beatty was named player of the final with bowling figures of 3 for 4.

Well done boys and Manly is now the NSW DCA 2011-2012 U13's Twenty 20 Carnival Champions.”

This was a thoroughly enjoyable season of rep cricket played by a group of boys who gelled into a true team and had a lot of fun as a group. The vibe amongst the group and the parents could not have been better and I would like to thank everyone for their contributions. Given the wet weather over summer we were lucky enough to finish all 7 of our games and were able to notch memorable wins against Sutherland and St George.

The most pleasing on field fact was that apart from the game against Newcastle we were competitive in every game, with just an inability to maintain pressure at crucial times or inconvenient rain adjustments to targets holding us back from a couple more wins.

Every single player contributed at times, whether with runs, wickets, tight bowling or in the field, and the team was led with great maturity by Johnny.

MWJCA 2011/2012 Season Report President’s Cup – Under 15

The 2011/2012 Presidents Cup season for the Under 15 age group proved to be very successful. Despite the inclement weather the team went through the season undefeated and indeed, even in the washed out rounds they were in a strong position to expect a win.

Three major points to sum up the season.

1. The bowling was extremely strong. The strategy going into the season was to send the opposition in and build pressure through line and length. Some of the individual results merit a mention with Nic White taking 13 wickets at an average of 6.9 while Justin Knight in his first season of rep cricket, opened the bowling taking 12 wickets at an average of just 5.2, while Jack Murphy & Charlie Hawling both provided great support.

2. The fielding was the stand out skill of the summer. The boys not only supported the bowlers, they also made opportunities. In just about every game the opposition were in early trouble and the boys took wickets in clumps. Hornsby being 6/52 before the rain, Central Coast 7/63, Sutherland all out 54 and Penrith 7/28. Daniel Plant (5), Andew Mahn (4) and Matt Wickham (3) the major contributors to the catches with Kian Mantle taking 5 behind the wicket. Others chipped in with some blinders (Johnny Dew and Bede Sajowitz). The bat was always surrounded by aggressive fielding from the likes of Daniel Plant, Hayden Kelly and Matt Wickham.

3. The batting is the area where the boys need to improve. No doubt there is plenty of talent, which various boys exhibited at times, but with only two scores over 30, I feel more application is required and the boys need to value their wickets, particularly early on in their innings. Jack Murphy had a sensational knock of 81 in the first game to set up the bowlers and Andrew Mahn played a match winning innings of 37 n.o. in the final game. Daniel Plant, Kian Mantle and Johnny Dew all contributed independently.

The team can certainly be proud of their title defence. Great team spirit, confidence they can win from all situations with great enthusiasm and support. Plenty of talk on the field (not just Nic).

My thanks go to all the parents for all their assistance and support. Together with the attitude of the boys it made my job easy.

MWJCA 2011/2012 Season Report President’s Cup – Under 16

The U16 Presidents Cup season started with the team ready to go, but thanks to the 'big wet' we only managed to play three games of the six. In our three outings we had one full game against Hornsby which we won, one shortened game due to weather which we narrowly lost, and one that was abandoned before a result. The lack of matches meant that no one player dominated statistically either with the bat or ball. Interestingly, there were no big individual efforts either - just a good team performance each time. The team also had coaching input from Mitch Pugh, Adam Gummer and Butch Boyer – a big thanks to all, and in particular to Butch who went above and beyond in the back half of the season. It was a shame we didn't get more opportunity to put their tips into practice. Thanks to the parents that drove all over Sydney, sometimes to two or three different grounds on match day trying to get the boys a game. The team was Bill Ormonde, Dan Schroeder, Dylan McKenzie, Dylan Sargant, Harris Rogers, Josh Lee, Raj Mehta, Sean Tingcombe, Vivan Misquita, Will Shaw and Sam Collett.
