President’s Report

Welcome to the 2008/09 52nd Annual Report for the Manly Warringah Junior Cricket Association Incorporated.

As president I welcome you to read this report.

The 2008/09 season was my first as president of ‘your’ association, having taken over from Tony Pecar. I refer the association as “yours” as it belongs to the players, parents, coaches, managers, friends, supporters and the 10 clubs that compete in the Saturday morning competition. You are the association.

In June 2008 the Association was confronted with the discovery that our financial funds had allegedly been misappropriated. With the new season only a matter of weeks away, it was discovered we were left with little if any money in our accounts. To compound this we still had outstanding debts to settle. With the help and support of the committee, clubs, Warringah Shires, the Manly Warringah District Cricket Club and NSW Cricket we managed to work through our issues and are now back on our track financially.

This season, 105 teams took part in the Saturday morning competition. In addition to this there were 22 kanga teams. ‘In 2 cricket’ was launched and replaced ‘Have-a-Go’ this season and was run by Wakehurst, Cromer and Collaroy. The numbers of boys and girls that attended were outstanding which leaves the association in a good position for players in future seasons.

Our representative season was of mixed fortunes. Apart from the U15 Weblin Shield team, no other teams made it through to the semis. The U15’s had an excellent season making it through to the final against Penrith at Emu Plains. Although we did not win, the team did their best and represented the association in the spirit that we are renowned for. Just when he thought he had retired, a special thanks must go to Geoff Mee for stepping in and performing the role of Representative Chairperson. Without you Geoff and the other representative committee members the representative season would not have happened for Manly Warringah.

We continue to lobby the three councils whose playing fields we use for better facilities. Unfortunately with the over-use the fields suffer from due to the winter sports we continue to make do with what we have. Until further open spaces for sports are acquired by councils, the situation will not improve.

I would like to thank the following association sponsors: Mike Pawley’s Sports Warehouse, Manly Rentals and the Manly Warringah Coaching School. With the financial hardship we were confronted with this season your generosity will never be forgotten. Additional sponsors are always welcome to assist in the high costs of running the association.

The Association Committee (Secretary, Assistant Secretary and Treasurer) have done an exceptional job this season considering the circumstances we were faced with. The club delegates again have provided such valuable input and support (the healthy debates at meetings, ending in late nights). With such support it has made my job much easier and it has been a pleasure to perform the role of president.

The conclusion of season 2008/09 marks the end of junior cricket for some players and families. I wish you well in your future sporting endeavours, be it in cricket or another code. It is hoped that the memories of your junior cricket days will be fond ones, which will live with you forever.

I congratulate all teams for the manner in which you played season 2008/09. For teams who won premierships and players who won individual awards, well done.

Best wishes and looking forward to a successful 2009/10 season.

Rob McKenna

Secretary’s Report

I took over the role of Secretary in July 2008 and began the process of gathering information for the fraud case against MWJCA. This is ongoing.

During the year I have:

• Tried to gather as much history of the Association as possible, including Minutes of Meetings, Association Records, and History of Winning Teams. • Incorporated the Association. • Drafted a new Constitution and had it approved. • Set up new Bank accounts for the Association and worked with Danielle Simpson, the Treasurer, to get processes in place. • Put together a comprehensive Annual Report which includes details of all Saturday morning competitions, representative team reports, records, winning teams etc. • Set up and maintained the Member database.

On behalf of MWJCA and all players, I take this opportunity to thanks Vicki Carden for taking on the role of Competition Secretary for the season, and also to Danielle Simpson for taking on the Treasurer’s responsibilities.

I wish the Association all the best for the future.

REPRESENTATIVE TEAM REPORTS 2008/09

Under 10 Development Squad

Coach: Ian Raymond Manager: Paul Anderson

At the conclusion of the trials held in September 2008, ten (10) boys were eventually registered for the U/10 Representative Development Squad. A further two players were invited to join the team later leading up to the NSW Cricket sponsored 20/20 Gala Day held 22nd February 2009. Team list is below.

For the 2008/09 season, a team was not entered into the Foster Shield and the team became a development squad. As there was no formal program set for the team, Cricket NSW provided two incentives (and later turned out to be highlights for the boys) for consideration by Associations. The first was by inviting teams to participate as the ‘on ground entertainment’ during the Ford Ranger one-day match between NSW and QLD at the SCG on 19th November 2008; and secondly by inviting each Association to participate in a Gala day that was proposed for February 2009.

Paul and I developed a training schedule accordingly and a total of six training sessions were held between October 2008 and February 2009 on Sunday afternoons at Graham’s Reserve. On average, approximately 70% of players attended each session demonstrating the level of enthusiasm and interest of the boys and the ongoing commitment by all parents. Early signs indicated a strong and varied yet complementary range of skill levels across the team due to the boys playing a mixture of both average cricket and real cricket formats.

This combination proved to be valuable when we entered the team with the addition of two new players to the squad in the NSW Cricket 20/20 Gala Day. Although on the day, the team was promised to play two full matches, it was a little disappointing for the boys that they only played one proper match against Sutherland Shire. In this match, the boys played very well and only fell short by a mere 13 runs (97) against Sutherland’s total of 110. Each player played exceptionally and supported each other greatly. Best bowling figures for the match was Jack McKenna capturing 2/13 off three overs and Max Jolley 1/7 off two overs. The batting performances were closely shared by Aaron Stevens, who scored 20 runs, and Ellis Raymond, who scored 19 runs.

Overall the boys gelled really well since coming together as a squad late last year and the parents were great in fully supporting the boys. The boys were happy and enjoyed their time together particularly at the SCG as part of the on field entertainment.

Thanks to the MWJCA for their continued support throughout the season which was greatly appreciated by both Paul and I and the team.

The boys should be very proud of the way they played this season. The most important criteria for determining the success of the season was the level of improvement shown by the boys, which was significant. Our trip to the Newcastle Carnival at the end of the season illustrates this point with our best individual and team performances occurring during the 4 matches.

The boys were very positive, tried their hardest and enjoyed their cricket. This will ensure they continue to develop as cricketers.

There were many team highlights, the wins against Blacktown, defending 83 and Newcastle Presidents, defending 122. In addition, our run chase against Central Coast was memorable – set 224 in 40 overs we made 200, our highest score of the season by far. The boys never gave up which typified their attitude throughout the season.

Congratulations to Joseph Graham who scored 2 50’s during the season, the first for the team in representative cricket, and was voted the most valuable player by his peers after the DCA matches. His aggregate of 285 runs at an average of over 40 are a reflection of how well he played during the season.

DCA Arch Cawsey Shield – Under 12

Coach: Ross Trewartha Manager:

Team: J. Dew, J. Fogarty, S. Gainsford, J. Gonda, L. Hughes, H. Kelly, M. Levene, L. McDiarmid, L. Parkinson, B. Schimek, Z. Trewartha, B. Wickham

Ranked: 18th

Match 1 v Bankstown, Playford Oval, Bankstown Batting first we reached a respectable 2-84 (Liam Hughes 36, Sam Gainsford 26), before a rush of wickets saw us finish on 9-130, a few short of the 150 which we thought would be a winning score. Bankstown were cruising at 1-92, before James Fogarty took a memorable hat-trick!! Another wicket in the next over and with Ben Schimek 1-3 from 4 overs, we reduced them to 6-93. Some strong hitting, with a bit of luck saw Bankstown pass our 130 without the loss of another wicket. Not the start we were looking for but we were competitive for the entire game and with a few more runs, may have secured a win.

Match 2 v Sutherland, Terrey Hills Oval Not much to say about this game. At no stage did we ever look like we were in the contest. Despite Luke Parkinson (3-20 from 8 overs), and Johnny Dew (2-23), and some tidy contributions from a couple of others, too many bowlers were wayward, allowing Sutherland to reach 7-181 from 50 overs. The regular loss of wickets saw us crash out for 79. Enough said !

Match 3 v Gladesville, Gannon Oval, Ryde A concerted effort to build partnerships saw Ben Schimek (39) and Sam Gainsford (41) add 75 for the second wicket. A further partnership of 41, between Zach Trewartha (31 from 34 balls) and Matt Levene (29 from 24 balls), saw us reach 9-172 from our 50 overs. Despite James Gonda’s 1- 16 from 10 overs Gladesville managed the 173 for victory in the last over, for the loss of 6 wickets. Wides and no balls totalled 25, not only valuable runs, but 3 and half extra overs!

Match 4 v Hawkesbury, Terrey Hills Oval Luke Parkinson took 2 wickets in successive deliveries to have Hawkesbury 2-12, before their opener batted throughout the innings to make 110 from a total of 4-224. The quick outfield and some big hitting late in the innings saw the game get away from us after it looked like we might be chasing 180. Two early wickets was not the start we were looking for, however the run rate remained competitive, but wickets fell at regular intervals. Despite a rapid 28 from Ben Wickham and a fighting 50 from Matt Levene, we faded to be all out for 141.

Match 5 v North Shore, Primula Park, Lindfield

A win! Sam Gainsford with 68, played a magnificent innings to give us a competitive total of 9-120, in a rain reduced match. Batting through 4 rain interruptions which saw the match reduced to 36 overs, Sam was the 8th wicket to fall after opening the batting on short notice. With a decent total on the board and reduced overs, the boys switched on and bowled and fielded to a plan. No bowler went for more than 3 an over, some staying well under 2, and the fielding had that extra edge to it, which restricted North Shore to 5-102.

Looking back, it was a season which didn’t deliver as much as it had promised. The team has some obvious talent, however very few players produced the consistency needed to win games. At times we were let down by poor execution, resulting in a poor period of the game, either batting, bowling or fielding. These poor periods cost us a shot at victory in 3 games. This is where concentration, and thinking about the game plays a key role.

Despite some losses appearing decisive, many of the games were closer than that. Cricket is a game that swings on some critical points. At different stages during the match, the game may be in the balance, but the winning team will be the one which takes control of these stages of the game, either with bat, ball or in the field. To emphasise that the talent is there, we had 4 boys selected in the Emerging Blues squad for next season. Congratulations to Sam Gainsford, Matt Levene, Ben Schimek and James Fogarty.

In addition the team had a very successful tournament at Lismore, (both on and off the field!?!) winning 3 of the 4 games, losing only to the eventual winners. Zach Trewartha was named bowler of the tournament, including a hat-trick against Central Coast, while Sam Gainsford won man of the match awards in 2 games.

So all that is needed to push for the semi-finals is more consistency. The talent is there, but we need to bring it more than just once or twice during the season.

A big thanks Bruce Wickham, John Parkinson and David Gainsford for their help and commitment during the season, at both games, training and touring. Special thanks also to Sue Hughes for putting together the fantastic photo albums for the boys. Thanks Sue.

To all the parents, families and supporters; thanks to the squadron and all those who scored, brought afternoon teas, drove kids around, babysat, helped at training, helped after the game and into the evening!! Thank you again for your support during the season, and once again you all helped make the rep experience a good one for everyone.

How do you measure success? Usually it’s by the position you finish on the ladder and how many wins you have. We finished out of the finals play offs this year, 4th in our division, with 2 wins to our credit and we still had a successful season. The yard stick of success is measured by the application of our Team and the relationship the players had between themselves and the game of cricket.

Off the playing field our Team continued to train as a group after the season had finished, it wasn’t compulsory. The way the players turned up fully decked out in the Team gear and the way they applied themselves to the training sessions showed to us, as coaches, that each Team member was eager to improve and make a success of their cricket.

The enjoyment the boys had at our team picnic at Collaroy Beach, where they all played beach cricket (just about all day) devoured the BBQ and took catches in the surf showed that we have a very successful blend of happy and well adjusted athletes which will ensure success for Manly Cricket in the years to come. If we are providing an environment and a pathway for this group of young men to enjoy their cricket and form friendships along the way, we have had our most successful season on record.

Parramatta, the team that won this year’s Gee Shield, only pipped us 9 down, whilst the 2 other losses we had were only a result of a good individual performance by 1 player from each other team, both of whom scored in the 60’s. Whereas we were looking for that great individual performance that didn’t come from any one Manly player. We all contributed reasonable batting performances across the board with a highest score of 37 and plenty of starts in the 20’s that will progress into 50’s and 100’s in the seasons to come. Our bowlers did a terrific job in restricting teams to scores that were winnable and they deserve great credit for their efforts this season.

Thank you to the all the families involved, for your support and input by providing wonderful afternoon teas and positive encouragement from the other side of the boundary fence. Even when our training sessions went overtime we felt you were behind us all the way, it is truly appreciated.

Daniel Schroeder: Our opening bowler, who will terrorise batsmen in the future, took 4 wickets at about 3 runs per over. Just what the team needed at the start of the innings. In his second rep season Daniel’s love of the game and application will see some rapid improvement over the next couple of years.

Daniel Pitcher: One of our all rounders, with a top score of 19, an economy rate of just over 3 runs per over, along with great catching and throwing, contributed well to the team’s performance. Daniel’s natural ability will see him develop into a consistent performer throughout his career.

James Pearce: Our co-captain and very tough competitor, opened the bowling in great style, also captured 4 wickets with one of the best economy rates in the competition of a touch over 2 runs per over. A great effort all season from a fine leader.

Evan Kirk: On his debut year, took 5 wickets with an economy rate just over 2 and showed us that he can compete at this level with the best of them. Always willing to listen and learn, Evan’s cricket improved with every game.

Sam Hole: Top scored for us with 37, averaged just under 20 with the bat and found a new skill of spin bowling with an economy rate just over 2 per over, was a well deserved nomination for the Emerging Blues and is knocking on the door of higher representative honours.

Huw Griffiths: Our other debutante, bowled very steadily and had the amazing stat of being the only player who did not get out for the entire season. That’s right, he didn’t give his wicket away once, showing great powers of concentration and fighting spirit. Characteristics that can’t be taught but come from within.

Ben Falconer: With 4 wickets, an economy rate just over 2.5 and some classic shot making, will be a true all rounder in the years to come. Ben also is knocking on the door at the Emerging Blues and with a bit of luck going his way with the bat, shows that he has the confidence to destroy attacks and is developing a bouncer that is rarely seen in this age group.

Liam Filmer-Ramsay: 9 wickets at an average of 10.5, an economy rate of 2.9, coupled with a high score of 23 not out and some wonderful fielding shows why he also has the Emerging Blues in his sights. Always reliable with quality bowling Liam’s cricket brain will take him a long way.

Hamish Ferguson: The best judge of performance comes from your team mates and Hamish was the player’s choice for the best performer of the year. A blistering, against the odds, 32 v Newcastle, 9 wickets at an average of 6.4, an economy rate of 2.1, best bowling of 4/11 and some splendid catching and fielding showed why his team mates thought so highly of him. Again, another one of our team members knocking on the door for higher honours, Hamish’s love of the game and sense of “Team” over “self” will stand him in good stead for the future.

Angus Demol: With a high score of 27, Angus is our “rock” at the top of the order. The victim of some great catching by the opposition, robbed Angus of more runs. The tide will turn soon where those shots will go for 4 and high scores will be around the corner. With 3 catches, a stumping and some neat glove work, especially to our spinners, Angus will catch the eye of Cricket NSW in the years to come.

James Crombie: With 22 as a top score, 3 wickets at an economy rate of 2.5, along with some brilliant fielding, shows that this all rounder will go places. As one of the highest run scorers and wicket takers in the Saturday morning competition, James’s confidence will grow and he will be a force in Rep teams for years to come. Great results and higher honours are just around the corner.

James Boyer: Our other co-captain, James had another reliable year. Opening the batting with a high score of 28, 5 catches, a stumping and showing maturity beyond his years, James steered the team around the park with great skill. A born leader, James will be the team’s cornerstone for many seasons to come.

PLAYER’S PLAYER – HAMISH FERGUSON DCA Harold Moore Shield – Under 14

Coach: Mike Pawley Manager: Michael D’Arcy

It was a disappointing season for the Manly Moore Shield team this year with only 1 win. The batting was inconsistent with one main partnership producing most of the team’s runs in each game. When I look back over the season the second game was the turning point. The boys having won the first game convincingly then lost the second after batting so well, to see the only six of the day hit on the last ball for a Northern Districts win. The remaining three games saw us up against three strong sides in Central Coast, Parramatta and St George. Manly's bowling was inconsistent with the boys unable to find a good length allowing these sides to score freely. The game of cricket is always a learning experience and there were enough lessons if committed to memory to stand the boys in good stead next year. A number of boys had good seasons while others failed to get any momentum. I would like to make “Special Mention” to Scotty White and Mickey Edwards for graciously filling in while Jesse was out injured.

Ryan Farrell ©: Ryan as Captain started the season with a bang with 43 and 3/20 against Canterbury. This was followed by 39 and 1/29 against Northern Districts where as captained he played his heart out, only to see Northern Districts hit a six on the last ball to win. He got invaluable experience as captain this season, having to make quick decisions in a number of tough games.

Ben Rowbotham: Ben generally opened the batting with Billy as well as sharing the wicket keeping duties - a position he could make his own with additional work in the off season. Ben made a number of starts with his 40 against Northern Districts being the foundation of our innings and was a valuable player.

Tom Kaye: Tom was our leading all-rounder taking 2/19 from 10 overs opening the bowling against Canterbury. He followed this up with 70 and 2/23 against Northern Districts. Tom scored a patient 27 against Parramatta in a 75 run partnership with Keenan. Tom continued to show his ability as a cricketer and will only get better in the future.

Billy D’Arcy: Billy opened the batting and was very solid against some quick bowling. Always getting a start but a number of silly run outs eliminated the good work. His leg spin bowling was tight and he was unlucky with a number of catches dropped. He fielded well taking 3 good catches in the gully and will benefit for the tough experience of this season.

Jessie Moffat: Unfortunately Jessie missed the first 3 games due to Injury. His aggressive batting was a loss to the team dynamics. He proved a handy bowler with some good spells in the two games he played with 2/27 from 7 overs against the Central Coast and 1/18 against St George. He batted well for his 24 against the Central Coast.

Keenan Gillespie: Keenan is an aggressive front foot player. He was involved in two good partnerships with 43 out of 76 with Ryan against Canterbury and 47 out of 75 with Tom against Parramatta. He also was undefeated on 28 against Northern Districts. Keenan had an excellent season with the bat.

Stephen King: Stephen is a genuine swing bowler who bowled a number of good spells where he beat the bat often. He batted at 7 in most games and valued his wicket by spending long periods at the crease, after early wickets had been lost. Stephen took 2/7 from 3 overs against Canterbury and 1/27 from 8 against Northern Districts. A good contributing season from Stephen.

James Bernasconi: James is a very accurate change bowler with a good . He took 1/12 from 5 overs against Northern Districts and 2/24 from 8 overs against the Central Coast. James finished the season with 1/34 from 10 overs as well as a memorable moment with a spectacular one handed catch at fine leg.

James Trickey: James is a powerful cricketer who developed with each game. He has a powerful arm and used it well in the outfield. The last game against St George was his best where he was promoted to open the bowling and played aggressively to top score with 28. James will benefit next season with his first year of DCA under his belt.

Robert Andrews: Bob was one of our opening bowlers this year where he leant a lot about line and length. His best game was against the Central Coast where he took 2/36 from 9 overs with a magnificent caught and bowled. In the same game he scored 19 and an aggressive 36 no when he volunteered to open the batting in the second innings.

William Jonkers: Will had a very good season with the ball being the leading wicket taker with the best average. He produced some unplayable balls. In the first game against Canterbury he bowled a great length taking 2/7 from 8 overs. Will bowled well against Parramatta taking 1/17 off 6 overs and 2/21 against St George. His batting has improved with a number of determined innings.

Daniel Patterson: Daniel stepped up to reps this year and due to circumstances had few opportunities to shine. He will gain a lot from this years experience and continue to develop as a cricketer both with bat and ball. Daniel displayed some outstanding fielding particularly in our trial games and was always enthusiastic.

Below is the individual Batting and bowling performances.

PLAYER’S PLAYER – KEENAN GILLESPIE DCA E.G. Weblin Shield – Under 15 THE MIKE PAWLEY REPRESENTATIVE AWARD

Coach: .Mike Pawley Manager: Steve Beatty

Team: Sam Alexander, Cameron Ashe, Javed Badyari, Taylor Beatty, Jordan Daly, Tom Drewett, Angus Jackett, Jacob Graham, Dylan Marshall, Jake Murphy, Jarrod Rawlings, Sam Webber, Reece Hodge

This was a fabulous season of achievement with some incredible personal landmarks. Australian coach, john Buchanan always talks about personal and team everests when he analyses performance and almost to a player, each of the under 15 grand finalists played above anything they had previously achieved.

The team got to the grand final after punishing victories against Bankstown and Blacktown, lost to Fairfield, washed out against ACT after a dreadful days return trip to Canberra, and beat Georges River, qualifying for the finals play offs by virtue of a remarkable bowling rate and impressive batting stats that left us way ahead of all teams on quotient. A rugged hard fought semi final victory over Parramatta and rain interrupted final at Penrith where we only needed 80 runs off 40 overs to hold the trophy aloft and fell short as a batting side.

As a bowling team we were without peer in the Weblin shield. Javed Badyari and Dylan Marshall converted to spin early in the season and no side got on top of their mesmerizing accuracy and variation. Javeds stats tell their own story, earning him a place in the NSW U15 schoolboys team. Dylan got the call up to 5th grade and established himself as a wicket taking, economical off spinner, possibly the best in his age group in the state.

Sam Alexander and Cameron Ashe bowling left arm spin added to the strike power of the slow bowling department, 4 classs spinners, probably 3 more than any other team, and that made a difference to the results.

Taylor Beatty and Angus Jackett had fabulous seasons opening the bowling, always accurate, both wicket takers, a class act of swing and seam bowling. Angus’s 5 wickets in the final stamped him as a grade player with a future.

Reece Hodge and Jake Murphy, before his unfortunate injury, added depth to the attack, the best in the competition.

And there was ever reliable Sam Webber behind the stumps with lightning quick stumpings and quality glove work at all times.

Jarrod Rawlings was off to a sensational start, almost invincible from his round 1 century, our leading batsman along with Javed who has class and incredible fielding skills.

Jordan Daly climbed as many everests as any other team member, playing a match winning innings in the semi and was arguably the form batsman in the side by the end of the season. A stunning development in the batting skills of another of our brilliant fieldsmen. Javed and Jordan really are brilliant fieldsmen by any measure.

Jacob Graham played a match winning hand with Jordan in the Parra semi. There will be more opportunities in future seasons for Jacob to show his batting skills. That is the hard thing about rep cricket, not everyone gets a go all the time. Reece and Tom Drewett can both be very, very good batsmen over the next few years and move up the grade ranks, again with more opportunities than they got this year.

I believe that every name on the team list above will be playing grade cricket for Manly Warringah within 3 years. Doug McGrath will be very satisfied with his role as a mentor to them all.

PLAYER’S PLAYER – JAVED BADYARI DCA C.S. Watson Shield – Under 16

Coach: Andrew Fraser Manger: Bob Poole

This team had three wins from 5 matches and finished equal 6th from 18 teams, which was a pretty successful campaign for the Manly boys. Had we won the toss against Hawkesbury, it would have been 4 from 5. Our other loss was to South Eastern who won all of their five matches. But I believe if we had held our catches, then that game was there for the taking too. This annual report is a time to thank everyone for their respective contributions throughout this campaign and highlight the positives. The team spirit that this group developed across the series was a joy to be a part of. In summary, everyone in the team became a better cricketer as a result of this rep season. Everyone now knows how to play tough, competitive cricket. Everyone contributed at some stage. Everyone had some fun singing the Manly victory song after our 3 wins. Last but not least, everyone enjoyed it! Yes, rep cricket is very demanding, but we have proved it can also be enjoyable. The key is just being able to find a balance between the intensity and having some fun with your team mates. In the future, just make sure enjoy the challenges and look forward to those tough battles – when you come out the other side, it is incredibly rewarding. To the thank yous. Matty Alexander as captain and Luke Grant as vice captain. Well done guys. A tough assignment for Matty in his first stint as captain, but he did well and benefited from the experience. Thanks to Bob Poole for his tireless efforts as Team Manager. Bob was outstanding in this role. We all have our personal idiosyncrasies when watching our boys perform, but Bob’s is priceless, as is Lyn Pugh’s statuesque pose, each time Mitch hits the crease. Thanks to Caroline Poole, Glenn Kennedy and Pete Spray for their stints at the scorebook across the season. Thanks to Lisa Spray and Julie Wheatley for their photographic masterpieces. Thanks to all the parents. You were a fantastic group of people. To coach a rep team and not have one parent register a complaint all season, nor hear of any dissatisfaction, is just beyond belief & a credit to you all. Thanks to Geoff Mee as Chairman of the reps for his tireless work. Thanks to our umpire Marty Edgell who did a great job. Finally, I’d like to thank all the players, who were the stars of the show and made the season an enjoyable and rewarding one for me as their coach. They played some amazing, albeit unorthodox cricket at times, that gave the parents lots of enjoyment. Many of this squad also went on to play a part in Manly’s Green Shield finals campaign. I hope to see more of you all for many years to come, as you enter and progress through Manly's grade ranks.

Below is a brief summary of each player in the 2008-09 Watson Shield team: Luke Grant: Luke opened the batting in every game with Jake Fraser and was involved in a match winning 81 run opening stand in round 3 v Bankstown. Luke had a top score of 56. A courageous player and great team man. Once he learns to use his feet to the spinners, his strike rate will increase significantly Jake Fraser: If Jake can develop his horizontal shots in the off-season, he will score heavily at the top of the order next year. One of the most-improved players this season, because he continued to work hard at his game. Mitchell Pugh: This was a disappointing campaign for Mitch and he knows it. But he bounced back to lead the Green Shield run scoring and finished in Manly’s 4th grade team. He is a class bat. Jordan Meredith: Batted #4 and was leading our run scorer. His top score of 56no v St.George was a gem of an innings and won us the game. Jordan is a match winner with massive potential as an all-rounder. But potential means nothing without the desire and commitment. A dual Manly representative in cricket and rugby league - it is up to you now Jordan as to how far you want to take your game. We all know you are good enough! Louis Anderson: Louis got a start in 4 of the 5 games and took 8-67 at average of 8.3. A brilliant fieldsman and wonderful team player. I love the way Louis plays his cricket. Very unorthodox, but a serious competitor. He too is a dual Manly representative in cricket and rugby league and unfortunately may have to choose which path to take next season. We all hope it is cricket Louis! Toby Poole: Our best batsman in this campaign with scores of 41, 39, 29no and 13 to deservedly win the Player’s Player award. Toby also scored over 500 runs in Saturday morning cricket, so he is now ready to make the more challenging step up to grade next season – you can do it Toby! Eddie Bernasconi: Eddie bowled with a good Economy rate of 3.24, but was unable to take a big haul of wickets. His bowling improved as the season progressed. If you keep working hard at your game Eddie and the rewards will come – not only bowling, but batting and fielding too Matt Alexander: Matt is a Mitchell Johnson clone. He underbowled himself in this campaign because he was the captain. He only bowled 30 overs, but took 6-80. M.Alexander is a star of the future and is one of the most popular young cricketers in the district! Matt Wheatley: Matty returned to reps after a 2 year hiatus and it was good to have him back. Started the campaign well with scores of 35 and 29 under pressure, playing a key role in helping us win the first game. A lot of talent. Maybe consider opening the batting next season Matt. Matt Spray: Matt returned to Manly reps for the first time in 5 years and was a welcome asset for the team, opening the bowling with his left arm swingers. Bowled tight spells with an economy rate of 2.91 and was unlucky to collect just 6 wickets. Pat Kennedy: Our wicket keeper and hard hitting late order bat. Who will forget his huge six under pressure at Manly Oval against Bankstown in the final overs to win us the game. Congratulations Pat on playing every year of MWJCA reps, along with Luke Grant and Mitch Pugh. That’s a huge effort. Dan Crombie: Dan returned to rep cricket after a few years on the sidelines and his bowling improved as the season progressed. It was good to see Dan enjoying his cricket again and we hope he continues to develop his swing bowling.

The 2008/09 Under 11 IDCA season was both disappointing and encouraging.

It was disappointing that were not able to record a win, with the game which presented our best chance being rained out. It was also apparent that we were unable to build pressure on the opposition batting line ups, taking only 24 wickets in 5 games when run-outs and retirements are excluded. Too many catches were put down, including 8 in one match, and too many extras given away. Given that we were generally batting second, the pressure of allowing the opposition to build scores of up and around 200 was too much to chase down.

The most encouraging thing about the season was the way the boys improved over the season. This was shown both in the Manly colours, and from what I have seen has also been apparent following their return to club cricket. The enthusiasm and dedication was excellent. Even when chasing large totals, the effort never flagged, and the determination in the batting was shown in the fact that in 4 of their 5 games the boys batted out the full 40 overs.

The boys were a credit to the MWJCA in the way that they presented themselves, both in their appearance and in their sportsmanship. The boys who acted as captains spoke well and confidently and set a good example.

There are a number of boys who are still eligible to play Under 11 cricket in 2009/10, and this years experience will put them in good stead for next year. I hope that all the boys will trial again next year. One thing that is evident from some of the other associations is that the level of depth that they have is far greater than here in Manly, so if we are to compete we need as many boys as possible putting their names forward.

I would like to thank all the boys for their efforts, and also to thank the parents who taxied them around, who helped on match days with scoring, boundary markers etc, and who provided afternoon teas. A special thank you to Linda Kewin for being an excellent team manager and helping keep everybody organised.

• Game 1: Kieren’s all round performance with 3/13 and 27 and his excellent partnership with Nick who scored 36, along with good innings from Joel (18) and Daniel (19 not out)

• Game 2: A dreadful fielding performance was saved by Nick’s 2 run outs. Also Nick (22) and Eoin (15) batted solidly.

• Game 3: Joel bowled well for 2/11, and Jake (23) and Kieren (18) batted well but the highlight was definitely Johnny’s 3/9 off 6 overs with 3 maidens, when he wasn’t afraid to give his spin plenty of air.

• Game 4: Nick with 33 and Daniel and Johnny with 12 each were the batting highlights, while with the ball Jake 1/6 off 4 overs, Kieren 1/14 off 4 and Ben 0/4 off 3 overs stood out.

• Game 5: After a slow start with the bat against some very good bowling, Jake and Lachie put together a sensible 32 run partnership which enabled Jake (80 not out) and Nick (37) the freedom to start attacking and put together 71 runs for the 4th wicket. Penrith chased the total down, but Jake (1/1 off 4 overs) and Jack (1/12 off 4) bowled well.

The Under 13 IDCA is a team of talented and gifted cricketers. These twelve young men were committed to team work, positive attitudes and, playing cricket in the true spirit of the game. Winning two games and narrowly losing the other two, each contributed to the success of the season. In alphabetical order:

Matt Cole: An outstanding middle order batsman who was able to accelerate the run rate and force the opposition into a defensive position. Always successful with the bat, Matt had top scores of 80 and 86 and was always able to take wickets when bowling. Sam Filmer Ramsay: As Vice Captain, Sam led the team by example with his outstanding fielding and spin bowling that troubled all batsmen. Batting at number 3 Sam demonstrated that he is not only a leader but also a talented high order batsman Andrew Fry: Opening fast bowler, as the strike bowler, Andrew always challenged the batsmen through his pace and swing. Andrew was always dependable whether opening or closing the bowling session. Bradon King: A talented wicketkeeper and accomplished batsman Bradon willingly opened the batting for several games. On at least one occasion his batting talents were key to good partnerships. He also contributed to the team with his spin bowling. The 2008/09 Manly U15 IDCA team was made up of 5 or 6 boys who had competed in this competition last year and a group of 14/13 year olds playing their first season of IDCA. The IDCA competition is effectively the second team from each of the competing districts which makes for strong competition and in particular against the larger districts such as Central Coast, Newcastle and Penrith. Based on last year’s Manly U15 IDCA results where the team lost in a playoff for third and fourth place, there was good reason to believe the 2008/09 team had the ability to be even more competitive this season. Every boy was capable of contributing to the team with both the bat and ball and there were three players who were ready and willing to don the keeper’s gloves.

Below is a summary of each of the pool games.

Match 1 – Central Coast 8/191 def Manly 166 When heading up the F3 we knew from last year’s losing experience to Central Coast it was likely to be one of the toughest games of the year. Once again the CC proved too strong in almost all departments. Batting: Andrew Gordon 29. Bowling: Jack Hislop 2/25, Landon Kirk 1/10. Match 2 – Manly 7/200 def North Shore 8/191 Having defeated North Shore in the off season, there was a level of confidence the Manly team could get its campaign back on track with repeat of that performance. Batting first, Manly compiled a solid total of 200 and always looked in charge of the game from that point. In the end, North Shore did well to bring their total to 191 but Manly played solidly and deserved the victory. Batting: Dan McKenna 50, Andrew Gordon 37. Bowling: Andrew Gordon 3/19, Jack Hislop 2/12. Match 3 – Manly 6/222 def Hornsby 148 Manly had lost their pre season game against Hornsby but knew if they could perform at the same standard as the previous week they could turn the tables. Once again Manly batted first and scored a challenging 222. Bowling a tight line and with the best fielding of the season so far, Manly managed to frustrate Hornsby’s run rate and force errors from their opposition. Hornsby succumbed to the pressure and were all out for 148. Batting: Dan McKenna 80, Joe Drewett 41, Nathan Heath 30. Bowling: Nathan Heath 2/20. Match 4 – Newcastle 6/160 def Manly 156 First game back from the Xmas break was disappointing with the opportunity lost to take a firm hold of second spot on the ladder. Batting first again Manly made a strong start at 3/107 but then lost their way to be all out in just 45 overs for 156. Newcastle’s strong batting line-up always looked like they would match Manly’s score which they did after 47 overs. Batting: Joe Drewett 53, Reece Hodge 45, Ryan McDonald 17. Bowling: Arshdeep Virdi 2/28. Match 5 – Manly 1/83 def Penrith 82 With three teams tied for second on the ladder (Manly, Penrith and Newcastle) the last pool game of the season against last year’s IDCA champion Penrith side was a must win game for Manly to have any chance of making the Final. In the best team performance of the year, with every player making a contribution with bat ball or great fielding, Manly were able to win comfortably. Bowling first, Manly had Penrith reeling with the loss of early wickets from which they never recovered. Batting: Ryan Campbell 53no, Joe Drewett 20no. Bowling: Nathan Heath 3/7, Jack Hislop 2/9, Mickey Edwards 2/13. Final – Central Coast 10/155 def Manly 9/152 This was a final that provided a day full of drama and a myriad of twists, urns and storylines. Played in constant drizzle and at times steady rain, it was a remarkable game on many different levels. In short, after 97 overs and with three overs to play, Manly needed just one wicket to win the IDCA competition. To their credit, the Central Coast number 10 and 12 were able to not only survive the last three overs but also score the 11 runs they required to win the title. Both teams dealt superbly with atrocious conditions for batting, bowling and fielding – slippery damp ball, skidding wet wicket and wet outfield. Batting: Scott White 25, Nathan Heath 24, Joe Drewett 20. Bowling: Arshdeep Virdi 2/25, Reece Hodge 2/29, Dan McKenna 2/30.

Well done to the Manly boys on an outstanding season – you should all be very proud of your results, the way which you supported each other, and importantly the sportsmanship displayed as a team and as individuals was exemplary. You all shoed great character throughout the ups and downs of the pool matches and performed superbly under pressure to beat last year’s premiers Penrith in the last game to quality for the final.

Your disappointment in losing such a close final is understandable. However, there is no doubt that this experience will, in time, only help further build your skills, knowledge and confidence to become even better cricketers in the future. Congratulations to you all…..

Thank you to all the parents for your tremendous support throughout the season, including transporting, car pooling, scoring, umpiring and afternoon teas. A very special thanks to Louise Hislop for Managing the team with her wonderful organisational skills and, of course, Mick Pawley and his team for their coaching and non-stop support of the team throughout the season.
