EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE REPORT

On behalf of the Executive Committee, I am pleased to present the 103rd Annual Report for 2014 – 2015 for your consideration.

We have just completed our second year of the NCU Competition (which is the joint comp from our Top 6 teams playing the Top 6 teams from Northern Suburbs) and again it was successful. In A Grade , our 3 teams (Rydalmere, North Ryde RSL and West Ryde Rovers) took the Top 3 places with Rydalmere defeating West Ryde in the final. In A Reserve (our 3 teams Carlingford, North Ryde RSL and Rydalmere) made the top 4 with Carlingford defeating North Ryde RSL in the final. Congratulations to all teams for flying the flag for NDCA and showing the strength of our competition in this joint venture.

During the season the Presidents from Manly, Hornsby-Kuringgai, Norths and NDCA had a meeting to discuss all things cricket and where we can help each other and what we can do to strengthen our competition. Another successful outcome from this meeting was to work together in dealing with Cricket NSW so our common interests could be put across as a bloc.

This season the “Spirit of Cricket” Awards went to :

1st Grade Carlingford Waratahs (A Reserve)

3rd Grade Rydalmere Maroon

4th Grade Vikings Blue

5th Grade Epping YMCA Red

Paul Kilby has become the first Captain to lead a team to 2 consecutive “Spirit of Cricket” awards and in its first 2 years in operation for the NDCA Lower Grades. This is a testament to Paul’s sportsmanship and character and his dealings with the Opposition.

In Judiciary news there were too many “Spirit of Cricket” issues. This is park cricket with plenty of kids, their fathers and players over 40 years of age out to have an enjoyable time playing Saturday afternoon cricket. We don’t need swearing, sledging and nonstop verballing in our competition. There are plenty of vacancies in grade and shires cricket for those who want to play to win at all costs and get involved in this behaviour. I implore our Club Delegates to reinforce this message to their teams that it is park cricket and playing with mates and enjoying the game should be paramount.

Our Umpires did a sterling job throughout the year and we appreciate the vital part they play in our game. Our regular Umpires were Ian Sinden, John Van der Light, Greg Berriman, Nirmal de Silva, Christiaan Kennedy and Vimalan Shan and the report back from the Captains during the year was that they all did an excellent job. For the second year in a row, Christiaan Kennedy took out the Umpire of the Year Award. Christiaan topped the ratings in all 3 categories (accurate decisions, match management and positive involvement in the game). Christiaan led the polling in both the NCU and NDCA Comps and so his award as our Umpire of the Year is well deserved.

Special thanks to Homer Paxton for organizing the Umpires again this year and for ensuring we had plenty of Umpires available for the Junior and Seniors Finals. To those Umpires who Umpired a few games in our comp or did Rep Games we thank you as well

This year we had 6 senior teams competing in the merged NCU comp and 22 teams in the NDCA 3rd-5th grade comps for a total of 28 Senior Teams. Total players registered were 502. This year we welcomed Cheetahs Cricket Club into our Competition and in their first year they made it through to the semis.

3

We had 57 teams in our Junior competitions (u10s to u16s). or teams registered to compete across the 10 Junior grades from Under 16 to Under 9 which was a decrease of 2 teams from last season. We convey our thanks to the Junior Committee in running the Junior competitions and the assistance provided from the Clubs.

This year for the first time we introduced semi finals for all our Junior Comps with 6 or more teams. We did this for several reasons: as not all teams play each other the same amount of times in a 2 day game, it keeps the competition open rather than some teams losing interest early if they have a poor start and semi finals and finals are exciting, pressure games and this can only benefit all cricketers. The overwhelming response was that the semi final format was a huge success and really added another dimension to the Junior Competition. To further enhance this experience I initiated “Player of the Finals” awards in all our Junior Comps. These will be awarded at the Junior Presentation Night.

Our u11s Junior Rep Team was our most successful team again making it through to the semi finals. Congratulations to the Coach (David Berriman), team management and the boys on a fabulous season. The u15s put in a credible season but were drawn against a couple of the top teams and just fell short of the semis. Rep Cricket is hard cricket, playing against the best players from the other Districts with many having competitions much bigger than ours. This year we had 3 teams in the Presidents Cup with mixed results. We know all the Rep coaches and Rep players tried their best and so we are appreciative of their efforts.

I wish to express my thanks on your behalf to Senior Vice President Paul Stapleton, Administration Officer Craig Menzies, Treasurer Paul Vanderlight and the Club Delegates for their assistance in running the Senior cricket competition during the season. Also my thanks to Junior Chairman Greg Berriman, the Junior Executive Committee and Club Delegates for the smooth operation of the Junior Competition.

We convey our thanks to the Ryde, Hornsby and Parramatta Local Councils for their assistance and allocation of the grounds for the season. We also thank these schools: Epping Boys High School, Epping North Primary and Carlingford Primary : for allowing us to play on their grounds.

We thank our main sponsor, the Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club (RELC). RELC has been our major sponsor for the last four years and their financial support has allowed us to keep Junior playing fees as low as possible. RELC has much to offer with a bistro and café for families, a good Chinese Restaurant, a sports bar and it runs a host of activities. I urge you to frequent RELC and use its facilities and consider taking up a membership. Please support the Club that supports us.

I apologize in advance if I have missed any other people I should have thanked but have forgotten.

Lastly, I have decided to step down as President from the NDCA to focus my energies on the Junior Competition and the Junior Reps.

THE SENIOR COMPETITION A GRADE…..Premiers: Rydalmere

The 2014-15 season was the second year of the Northern Cricket Union (NCU) competition. Like the previous season, the competition comprised the top 3 ranked teams from the:

 Northern Districts Cricket Association – Rydalmere, North Ryde RSL & West Ryde Rovers  Northern Suburbs League – Cammeray, Kirribilli Crusaders and Northbridge.

The leading run scorer in A Grade was Brett Papworth (357 @ 32.5), who narrowly beat Satinder Singh (354 @ 35.4) and Kel Gray ( 327 @ 32.7). 6 batsmen scored centuries this year – Sean Montague (170), Mal Coleman (143*), Kel Gray (131*), Aman Kasyap (109*), Phil Cook (107) & Satinder Singh (100*).

There were a number of standout bowling performances throughout the year. The leading takers were again led by Matthew Kennedy (56 wickets @ 7) and John Neville (39 @ 8). Some of the best individual bowling performances were John Neville’s 9/12, Raja Saluja’s 9/54 and Matthew Kennedy’s 8/20 in the semi final. 16 different players managed to take 5 wickets hauls throughout the season.

Grand Final: Rydalmere vs West Ryde Rovers

After leading the competition throughout the year, Rydalmere Wrens defeated West Ryde in the Grand Final to finish the season as undefeated Premiers.

Day 1 of the final started out with John Neville (5/81) picking up early wickets. The Wrens middle order fought back thanks to half centuries from Cam Rawding (52) & Brett Papworth (55) before some lower order partnerships helped us finish our innings at 168. This was a competitive total for a grand final but within reach of the dangerous Rovers batsmen. West Ryde then had just over an hour to bat at the end of day 1. As he has done all year, Matt Kennedy (5-32) ripped apart the West Ryde top order, with an unplayable spell of bowling, leaving West Ryde at 5 for not many at stumps.

There was a lot to do for both teams on Day 2, as West Ryde made slow inroads towards their target. As Nick Fairbairn & John Neville were closing in on a 50 run partnership, Scott Palmer (4-14) stepped up to do what he had done to West Ryde in the past, taking both scalps in quick succession, and wrapping up the tail, leaving West Ryde all out for 95.

It was a record breaking season for the Wrens, becoming the first team to win a hat-trick of 1st grade premierships since 1946 - 1949. We finished the year on 68 points, 15 clear of second place. At the end of the regular season the A Grade competition table was as follows:

14

THE SENIOR COMPETITION A GRADE…..Premiers: Rydalmere cont.

Matt Kennedy wound back the clock to take 56 wickets at an average of 7, including 5x 5 wickets hauls. Combined with Scott Palmer (30 wickets @ 12) and Todd Palmer (24 @ 9), the Wrens bowling attack dominated most batting line-ups throughout the year, finishing with 136 wickets for the year, with the average partnership only 11.6.

Rydalmere’s batting is usually the one area that lets us down, but there were a few notable performances this season. Returning from a year off, Brett Papworth finished the season as leading run scorer (357 @ 32.45). Aman Kashyap also scored his maiden first grade 100 and provided us with stability at the top of the order.

We would like to thank the NCU committee on running another successful season. In particular I thank Paul Stapleton, Philip Azize, Paul Vanderlight and Craig Menzies from the NDCA. The joint A- Grade and A-Reserves competitions have been well received in its first 2 years. The NCU competition is played in great spirits, with healthy and friendly rivalries.

We would also like to say thank you to the umpires for giving up their Saturday afternoons. It is a tough job, and most times it is a thankless job, but this year, it was good to see many new faces umpiring, and your efforts are appreciated by all.

Lastly, well done to all the players on season 2014/15. Enjoy the off season, and we hope to see you all returning again in 2015/16.

THE SENIOR COMPETITION A RESERVE…..Premiers: Carlingford Waratah

The 2014/15 NCU A reserve season was contested by 6 clubs. Last year’s Premiers Carlingford Waratah, North Ryde RSL and Rydalmere from the Northern Districts competition and North Shore, Chatswood Gypsies and West Pymble from the Northern Suburbs competition. After nine rounds of competitive cricket the minor premiership was settled on the final day as Carlingford defeated North Ryde to claim top spot with Chatswood third and Rydalmere fourth. Carlingford advanced to the Grand Final after their semi was washed out and faced North Ryde who scraped through against Chatswood in a low scoring, rain affected semi.

In a tense and nervy Grand Final Carlingford ground their way to 124 after being invited to bat in the face of some excellent bowling and fielding from North Ryde. With North Ryde travelling nicely towards victory the pressure showed with a wicket in the final over of day one and two wickets in the first over of day two meaning they could only muster 106 in reply. After a game played in great spirit Carlingford were crowned Premiers again defending their title from the season before.

Some individual highlights of season 2014/15 included:

 T. Blackett (Chatswood) led the aggregates with 392 runs at 49.  T. Sproule (North Shore) led the averages with 380 runs at 63.33.  J. Raven (Rydalmere) top scored with 159.  T. Gregory (Carlingford) 104* off 47 balls batting at number 10.  N. Lloyd (Chatswood) led the aggregates with 38 wickets at 7.71.  G. O’Neil (Carlingford) led the averages with 13 wickets at 7.46.  N. Lloyd (Chatswood) took the best figures with 7/11.  J. Condon (North Ryde) took 6/8 in the Grand Final.  C. Donnell (North Ryde) took a Hat Trick in the Semi Final.  C. Wickrema (Carlingford) led the dismissals list with 11.  B. Furness (North Ryde) took the most catches in the field with 9.  N. Pye & R. Barlow (North Shore) shared the best partnership with 182 for the 4th wicket.

Personally I’d like to thank all the clubs and players for a great season of competitive cricket played in the right spirit. On behalf of all clubs and players I’d like to thank Craig and Phil and all the people who helped organise and successfully run the competition this season. Finally I’d like to thank all the umpires who stood in our competition this year for giving their time and for a great standard of umpiring this year. See you next season!!

Chris Mackay,

Carlingford A Reserve Captain

16

THE SENIOR COMPETITION THIRD GRADE…..Premiers: West Ryde Rovers With a new captain Puneeth Gopal taking the helm, and the team being bolstered by 2 new recruits in Isaac and Brendan, and Ranga’s words again of “I’ve got a good feeling about this year boys” we went into the new season afresh and looking to win in the outset we in typical style lost! As was the way to be for the first half of the season in true rovers style, with Isaac’s introduction of a fine system in place after the Christmas break, our fortunes were to change, for the better it seemed

As with the previous season, the 3rd grade competition was a close run thing, especially at the top with the always strong Rydalmere and viking teams, having a strangle hold on the top of the ladder with the remaining teams scrambling to get a spot in the top 4 towards the latter part of the season

SEMI FINAL

West Ryde losing the toss and being putting into bat against Rydalmere Maroon, it seemed to be history repeating from the previous season in a semi final, alas, west ryde now had the batting prowess of Brendan making a stand of 58 and holding the team up to a respectable score of 168, puneeth and ranga helping to chip with 21 and 17 respectably giving the rovers something to defend on the second day

With the prospect of double the fines for any dropped catches etc, the team came out firing, the intensity could be felt in the field as ranga and Solomon bowled a blistering tight, opening spell. Pressure was maintained with Isaac bowling ( 4/25) the fielders backing their bowlers, especially with the ever reliable shyamal behind the stumps, in what was a nervous finish we came through!

Full credit goes to the maroon team, who gave us a great semi final to play in, but onwards to the finals we rolled…..

GRAND FINAL

Vikings went into bat in the last game of the 14/15 season, with players turning up late and a fielder leaving their shoes at home and fielding the first 2 overs in work boots it wasn’t a good start to the day for the fielding side, nonetheless our boys soldiered on, after some easy dropped catches and very unfortunate decisions against the Vikings and Brendan shining again, this time with the ball (4/23) Vikings were dismissed for 158.

With the loss of an early wicket in the first day bhushan and Brendan went out for a purpose of holding the ship and chasing down the runs, after bhushan was run out ( 39 ) brendan (52) once again saved the day holding up and end and batting an impressive 50+ overs steering us towards a certain victory until a very typical rovers collapse, in what was a very nail biting finish, and 2 wickets left in hand, 2 runs needed, plus Ranga calling out to play straight , Minshin lofted the ball over square leg for a 6 ended what was one of the closest finals we have ever played in

It was a season played in good spirits by all teams involved ( bar one ) and without the help of juniors playing in our team, and am certain, in others the competition wouldn’t of been as it could be

Our team would like to thank Alan Harrison who’s official involvement within the club will be sorely missed, Without shyamal in our team, nothing would be done and organised and Kush keeping a nice tidy scorebook and all the boys in check, also special mention to deno bowling club for putting up with our “team bonding” on a saturday afternoon, and well into the night and Jason for making our team dish a part of the menu.

As always it a was pleasure being involved in the NDCA and playing the game we all enjoy so much.

THE SENIOR COMPETITION FOURTH GRADE…..Premiers: Epping YMCA

Season 2014 / ’15 would be a season that had an almighty beginning, offered plenty of close calls throughout, never failed to provide drama and concluded in the most extraordinary way. This season saw 4th Grade have 8 teams seeded as: 1. 13/14 Defending Premiers - Nth Ryde 2. Previous Minor Premiers - Rydalmere M 3. Former 3rds side – Meadowbank 4. 13/14 Runners Up – Epping 5. Previous Semi Finalist - Vikings Blue 6. Vikings Red 7. Carlingford 8. Previous 5ths Winners - Rydalmere Blue The Top 3 Run scorers would be S. Best (M’bank), M. Goodenough (Rydal) and M. Maittlen (Nth R)

However the leading wicket takers would be R. Balani and A. Jeggannagari, both from Epping. As well as this feat was the way Epping was able to share the duties around with all other scalps being very evenly divided up between the bowlers.

2014/’15 Epping 4th Grade were not the highest, most talented individuals ever compared to the All Stars Team but they came together as a team and reached out to many different sources in their bid to achieve goals. Most importantly they had the courage to dream in doing all it takes in becoming a better cricketer, athlete and ultimately a better person overall. When it comes to true team spirit, it’s not about individuals it’s about always working together in a positive manner. The core of the team is the very good leadership group created, which is probably the secret to the season’s success. Many options, allowed for countless partnerships whether batting, bowling and fielding. The team have arguably the youngest, fittest, fastest list in the comp, include freak fieldsman with rocket arms and an excellent keeper. When things didn’t quite go to plan before the Christmas Break, this only made everyone train harder over the break to make amends, never giving up and believing in each other. The mistakes made last year would be learned from, come the Finals Series. The season saw a very close race between 7 of the teams going for a Top 4 Finals position and it came down to the last day of the regular season to decide the makeup. However just as Finals positions were set, some logistical discretion meant that Meadowbank would play Vikings Blue and Rydalmere would verse Epping in what would be two classic Semi Final Battles 1st Semi - Meadowbank v Vikings Blue Meadowbank electing to bowl first at Marsfield on a very bowler friendly day allowed Vikings to get to 182 off 70 overs when a crazy hour to end D1 would occur. Meadowbanks All Firing batting line-up the week before would be in tatters at 3/11 at stumps with the seasons 3 best all gone. 73 would be all they would score on Day 2 as Vikings Blue pulled off the upset of the season in the 1st Semi. 2nd Semi - Rydalmere v Epping Rydalmere likewise choose to suit their bowlers to the conditions. It was Epping, despite being under some early pressure, lead by R. Cabot with the bat and partnered at the 3rd wicket & 6th wicket by R. Aswani and S. Simpson accordingly to put together a very useful score of 145. Runs in the bank at Meadowbank would prove to be decisive and Cabot’s innings defining as Epping new ball bowlers carved some late destruction in the Day 1 Twilight, snaring 2 scalps. R. Balani and A. Jeggannagari would put on a clinic early Day 2 in one of the

18

THE SENIOR COMPETITION FOURTH GRADE…..Premiers: Epping YMCA cont. best bowling displays witnessed, to roll through Rydalmere to dismiss them for 78 to book their place in back to back deciders. Final – Epping v Vikings Blue The Final would see Vikings win the toss and bat on a perfect day for cricket at the Beautiful Upjohn Park. It was as close to the perfect game of cricket that you could get with Epping having Vikings 5/61 and despite a small fight back were all bowled out for 105 half an hour after tea. Even more pleasing was the wickets were shared around with W.C. Net bowler C. Basnayake spinning the game on its head with 3/12. The Epping openers then knocked off 56 for no loss to round out the perfect day of cricket at stumps day 1. The Final Day would see Epping go on to record an 8 wicket victory, breaking the drought and completing unfinished business for the core of the side. It was a fantastic experience to play this season and to see all the hard work of the last few seasons pay off, with the ultimate prize. We finally brought home the trophy. I would also like to thank the NDCA Executive Committee of Philip Azize, Paul Stapleton, Paul Vanderlight and Craig Menzies for organising and helping make my job a little easier. In a Home World Cup winning year, Greatness was Contagious. Andrew Tenni 4th Grade Captain Epping YMCA CC

THE SENIOR COMPETITION FIFTH GRADE…..Premiers: Epping YMCA Blue

The 2014/’15 NDCA Season saw 8 teams of: Carlingford, West Ryde Blue, The Cheetahs, Epping Blue, Epping Red, North Ryde Blue, North Ryde Gold and West Ryde White.

It was a season that was quite competitive and very evenly matched, where any team on their day, could beat any other team. There were many instances throughout the year when 1 or 2 key personel missing from any side would change the dynamics completely.

From a batting perspective, 5th Grade had a very good mix of older, experienced players coupled with yound raw talent. There was no short of 64 Half-Century’s scored and 12 went on to bring up the Ton. Carlingford’s Fedorows’, the form batsmen of the comp, compiling 5 between themselves. The most 6’s went to Epping’s A. Alice who sent 20 red leathers disapearing into the woods of West Epping, Curtis and Cox Park. In terms of batting performances, he was outstanding. His extraordinary eye and timing at times was truly a pleasure to watch.

In terms of bowling performances, the association had some very good performaces district wide. 15 5-Wicket hauls, 2 10-Wickets in a Match with most wickets going to S. Dale from The Cheetahs and Best bowling going to A. Bernar from Nth Ryde with 8/19. It was no surprise that Grand Final teams Carlingford and Epping YMCA Blue had a fair share of the quality bowlers in their teams.

Eppings team philosophy primarily focuses on giving everyone an opportunity to bat and bowl no matter what level of ability. For most part we play for the enjoyment without resorting to sledging or worring about winning at all costs. We have always played in the spirit of the game, which is the main reason we are all playing.

The last few rounds of the regular season is where the semi-finalists were finally decided. It could not have been any closer for one other team Epping YMCA Red who just missed out on 4th place by the smallest of percentage. 20

THE SENIOR COMPETITION FIFTH GRADE…..Premiers: Epping YMCA cont.

1st Semi - Carlingford v West Ryde Blue

West Ryde decided to send Carlingford in on an overcast day and did a good job of dismissing many batsman, however A Fedorow put on a Finals Century of 103 to lead his team to 194 half way through Day 2 to all but set up a victory. West Ryde would only manage 107 All Out in 41 overs with J. Fedorow the best of the bowlers with 5/29.

2nd Semi – Epping Blue v The Cheetahs

A very tight contest was had here on the Big “MCG” George Kendall Reserve. Cheetahs putting Epping into Bat and were in some trouble at 7/46 before P.Alice and A. Moore put on a partnership to get the total to 79 in 50 overs. This would proove to be a very deceptive total to a team not having played on the venue all season with The Cheetahs finding runs hard to score, becoming 5/22 overnight. Day 2 would see one of the bowling performances of the season with Tom Alice taking 3/34 and P. Alice 6/24 dismissing the Cheetahs for 72, winning a thriller by 5 runs.

Final – Carlingford v Epping Blue

The Big Final would be a battle between Carlingfords Strong Batting lineup and Eppings Top Bowling power. Epping did not let the big shots happen and kept the pressure on the top bats to dismiss key batsmen cheaply and take All 10 wickets for 98 off 47 overs. Tom Alice the biggest distroyer with 3/26 and A. Alice and D. Willis chipping in with 2/13 each. In reply, dispite a couple of speed bumps in the chase late day 1 to be 4/40 and then 6/68 the next day with two key batsmen out Epping was able to see their first victory home with T. Alice and C. Simpson finishing the job.

To every member of the team thank you for all your contributions in making the season once again enjoyable. Often, it’s those seemingly insignificant contributions which regularly have the greatest impact. A big thanks to Ranil Mallawa, Ben Pham and Anthony Moore who came into the team for the first time this year. Also to Andrew T and his committee in 4th grade who have always been on call to do all they can for our team and our club in the association. Look forward to getting together again next season for what is hoped to be another most successful season yet.

UNDER 16 – WATSON SHIELD

Team consisted of Joshua Palin (c), Matthew Stillen, Christopher Wadih, Jaedon Calder, Anshal Baruah, Hayden Winton, Muneeb Shirazi, Ammar Shirazi, Tusha Verma, Patrick Mynett, Sid Warrier and Justin Porter.

After starting the season with only 10 players after some selected players dropped out, the Watson Shield team competed wholeheartedly and gave their all in the five games they played.

In the first game against Fairfield at ELS Hall, the opposition batted first but Northern Districts were able to take regular wickets and dismissed Fairfield for 193 in 42.2 overs. Muneeb was the pick of the bowlers with 4 – 64 off 11 overs. Opening bowlers Josh and Jaedon each picked up two wickets. Set 194 to win, the boys set off chasing the target. After reaching 1-51, a collapse occurred where 4 wickets fell for 8 runs. Muneeb and Matt set about to rescue the innings and added 63 runs before both were dismissed in quick succession. As they were batting one player short Northern Districts were dismissed for 152.

In Round 2, the boys were away to Manly in brisk conditions out at Mike Pawley oval. We welcomed Sid Warrier to the team to make it eleven. Batting first Northern Districts struggled to score quickly against a tight attack. Good contributions from Anshal who was very unlucky to be dismissed for 49 and Hayden’s 31 took the score to 8 – 151 in 60 overs. However, it was never going to be enough and Manly reached the target in 43 overs and with only the loss of two wickets.

Travelling to the Central Coast did not bring any change of luck as Central Coast feasted on the Northern Districts bowling and they compiled 348 runs before being dismissed in the 59th over. Josh’s 3 – 45 was good reward for his persistence. Having fielded in the heat, a southerly change cooled things down when Central Coast fielded and they steadily took wickets throughout the innings to dismiss Northern Districts for 121 in 56 overs. At least they were made to work in the field to win the game. No batsman scored over 20 runs in a disappointing performance.

Round 4 began with both teams staring at a rain soaked ELS Hall field. However, the forecast was good and so the game was transferred to Meadowbank 10 and on the synthetic wicket. The match against Blacktown was reduced to 50 overs each and began about 11.15am. Justin replaced Patrick who was injured. Once again the steady fall of wickets and some interesting umpiring decisions hampered the boys’ efforts and Northern district were dismissed for 96 in 45 overs. Josh’s 30 runs were the only real highlight. Blacktown passed the target with 4 wickets down in 25 overs. Josh’s 2 – 4 was excellent in the circumstances.

The final round was played at Sutherland oval and in extreme heat. Losing the toss was unfortunate as the boys toiled manfully in the scorching conditions. Sutherland compiled 6 – 295 in their 60 overs. Ammar and Josh took two wickets each. A reshuffled batting line up did not change the boys’ fortunes and Northern Districts were dismissed for 92 in 40.2 overs. Jaedon was among the runs with 32.

Despite not winning any games the boys still enjoyed each other’s company and always tried hard and never gave up. For many it was their first taste of representative cricket and one in which they have gained valuable experience. We wish all the boys the best in their future cricket.

UNDER 15 – WEBLIN SHIELD

This season’s U15s Weblin Shield team was represented by Baxter Holt (c), Jamie McLeod, Harrison Kilby, Jayden Brown, Ben Smith, Brayden Dilley, Daniel Murphy, Yash Mankad, Matthew Bryson, James Hirsch, Sharan Rajendran and Ashton Whitting. The coach was Philip McLeod and the manager was Paul Kilby.

This season was a new experience for most players – playing on turf rather than the bouncy astro turf wickets of club cricket. Lower bounce, more spin, more seam movement, slower pace – all new challenges to be understood and mastered in a short space of time. We would also be playing 60 overs rather than the standard 50. We had a few practice games and the players quickly adjusted. The draw for the competition games was a tough one, with all games against opponents who were used to making the finals. We would need to be at our best to be competitive.

Game 1: v Parramatta away. We won the toss and invited them to bat first. We decided to use spin from the outset and Sharan bowled 6 overs of off-spin for a miserly 16 runs and tied the batsmen down. With pressure building the batsmen lost their cool and James nicked out 2 batsmen caught behind by Baxter who also had a bowl himself and grabbed 2 for 20. We kept them to 198 on what was a good batting wicket and we padded up expecting to win. In reply we started slowly however Baxter (39) and Brayden (26) combined for a 58 run partnership to get the run chase going. Matthew scored a neat 22 and then Jayden (44no) and Harrison (39) closed it out with a very strong partnership of 62 runs, hitting numerous boundaries. A great start to the competition with a win over our traditional enemies and neighbours (we had tied with them in the last encounter in the previous season).

Game 2: v Manly at home. As usual we drew the defending champions and they were keen for another win. We were confident of pushing them hard (each time we play them we get more competitive) and at 1-48 and Baxter firing it looked like we were headed for a reasonable score. However a bit of pressure from good bowlers, some bad luck and some poor shots and we slumped to all out for 82. Manly quickly chewed the runs off but we did keep taking wickets and in fact bowled them out for 172. They rarely get bowled out for under 200 so it was a solid achievement. The spinners did well with Yash taking 3-42 and Sharan 2-31. Manly, keen for outright points, asked us to bat again and threw everything at us for the remaining 40 overs. Our batsmen withheld the onslaught and in fact showed some good promise for the future games by reaching 7/105 on a wearing wicket and all batsmen spending some valuable time out in the centre against quality bowling. Hence, although a loss, there were a lot of positives coming out of this game.

Game 3: v South Eastern at home. The opposition had lost a few stars from the previous season and we therefore wanted to win this match. It was a good test to see whether we could win a game we were expected to win. We won the toss and chose to be positive by batting first. After the solid second innings against Manly we followed it up with a great all round effort. The opening partnership of 41 between Brayden (17) and Ashton (23) although slow was the foundation we needed for the later batsmen to accelerate from. Baxter smashed quick 51 before throwing it away. Jamie (22) and Harrison (33) then combined for 52 runs to ensure the total went well over 200. We finished on 218 and knew the game was there to win. In reply the opposition batted steadily and at 1-81 looked threatening. However we applied great pressure through tight bowling and excellent ground fielding and the runout by Jamie of their best batsman on 60 took the wind out of their sails. Jayden finally bowled with venom and took 5-19 – bowling out all 5 batsmen (I suspect a first in this competition), including 2 almost hat-tricks.

This win put us second on the table and with finals destiny in our own hands. All would rest on the next game……..

Game 4: v Sutherland away. A long trip south to a beautiful ground – Glenn McGrath Oval – was a fitting venue for us to fight for a finals spot. The opposition had played in the final the previous year and would have expected to crush the upstarts from NDs. Some overnight rain had to be soaked up and shortened the game to 55 overs. They won the toss and chose to bat, no doubt expecting to amass a huge total on a fast ground. Ben wrecked that idea by knocking over the stumps of their premier batsman for a blob, with a beautiful off-cutter that simply was too good. Sutherland then went into their shell and crawled to 100 off about 30 overs before striking out and reaching 234. Unfortunately our fielding was sloppy and we gave them probably an additional 30 runs. We should have been chasing 200. In reply Baxter simply blew them away. He struck 120 and showed he is in a class above all others in this competition. It was a sublime innings that deserved to be the foundation of a win. That it wasn’t is probably due to the inexperience of our team in competing at this level. We had a great chance to knock over one of the strongest teams on the competition. The partnership of 123 between Baxter and Ashton (28) took us to 2-131. The rest of the bastmen had chances but just couldn’t overcome an experienced opposition who tightened the noose at the right moments. With one over remaining, we needed 9 runs. The 34

opposition was screaming instructions to his team (to the embarrassment of all) and they knew they were staring at a loss. We only had one wicket in hand and Sharan on strike and James (22) at the other end. However with much scrambling and a bit of luck we need 3 of the last ball. We fell one short, finishing at 9/233. Had we fielded better it would never have come to this and we would have strolled into the finals. In the end, we drove back to Sydney proper, cursing the odd misfield, the odd missed single. It is a game of moments and we had learned how important each one of those tiny moments can be.

Game 5: v North Shore at home. This was an awkward game. We knew we had blown it against Sutherland. We wanted to test ourselves against another finals bound team. So when we won the toss we decided to bat on a very hot day (with thunderstorms forecast). Unfortunately the benign looking wicket had moisture and when the bowlers hit the mark the pitch did the rest. We struggled to 4-21 and looked gone until Matthew (9) and Jayden (77no) combined in a very solid partnership of 46. That gave us some respectability and after an unfortunate run-out Jayden carried on to get us to 116. North Shore were clinical in their response and chased to total down losing only 2 wickets. Within 30 minutes the heavens opened and the ground was under water and everyone had gone home.

So what does that all mean? We had fought bravely against some very good teams. We had seen some great individual efforts as noted above. There were also lots of solid contributions from all players during most games. In addition to those mentioned above, I want to note that - Justin bowled without luck but managed a wicket or 2 at useful times, Harrison smashed a lot of boundaries at key moments and showed improvement in the control of his off-spin, Sharan opened the bowling in all games with his tidy off-spin and troubled all oppositions, Jamie’s keeping improved as back-up to Baxter, Dan gave his all in everything he tried and particularly threw himself around in the field.

This was another season of growth across the team, ably lead by Baxter who finally displayed the batting supremacy we know he possesses. Many thanks to Paul Kilby for managing the team and assisting with the coaching. He deserves much credit for getting all the jobs done every game without any fuss. Too easily overlooked, he deserves acknowledgement and appreciation from everyone.

There is much to be optimistic about for the next season. We have one more season to go. A finals berth beckons.

UNDER 15 – PRESIDENTS CUP

Nick Austen (Balmain) Matthew Kazzi (St Patrick’s College)

Andrew Azize (St Patrick’s College) Surya Malhotra (Epping YMCA)

Sam Begg (North Ryde RSL) Siddharth Moharir (Epping YMCA)

Mitchell Cotton (Carlingford Waratah) Patrick Mynett (St Patrick’s College)

Liam Doherty (Dundas United) Pierce Rosman (Dundas United)

Pranav Hebbalu (North Ryde RSL) Anurag Yadav

Sanchay Kalra (West Ryde Rovers)

The U15 Presidents Cup team this year was made up of mainly U14 and a handful of U15 boys for the 6 game season. There weren’t many team combinations from the Saturday morning competition and with there unfortunately being no trial games the team came together slowly.

We had a very tough draw coming up against what ended up being the top 5 teams with a number of them having been together as Presidents Cup team for many years, so it was always going to be a ‘tough ask’ for us in this Competition. We ended up with four losses, a washout and a win in our last game.

Round 1 v North Shore:

Facing a Rep team that has been together for 4 years first up was always going to be tough and when North Shore won the toss and elected to bat first the boys found out pretty quickly what was required at this level. Manly batted very well to be 3 for 354 off 50 overs (with two centurions), however we did toil hard in the field and did pull the score back in the final 20 overs. We utilised 11 bowlers with the best being Sam Begg (0 – 41 off 10) and Sanchay Kalra 0 - 3.

The boys were a bit nervous when it was our turn to bat and were quickly on the back foot at 4 for 5 in the sixth over, and then 7 for 29, however some determined batting from Surya Malhotra (33), Pranav Hebbalu(10) and Liam Doherty (8) saw us hang around till the 36th over to be all out for 82.

Round 2 v North West Hurricanes:

At home for the first time, we unfortunately had to move the game down to Meadowbank due to wet weather, but we won the toss and had a bat. We started well with Pierce Rosman (34) and Surya Malhotra (17) looking good at 3 for 80, however we had some concentration issues and poor shot selection losing 4 wickets in 10 balls! Still only in the 27th over, we needed some occupation of the crease to get a competitive score and thankfully Pranav Hebbalu was our rock and ended up with a hard fought 31 and getting us to 139 at the end of our innings with assistance provided by Matt Kazzi (5) and Sid Moharir at number 11 with 8 hard fought runs.

Unlike the previous week we started well with the ball with openers Sam Begg (1 – 5) and Anurag Yadav (0 - 12) bowling tightly to have the Hurricanes at 1 – 17 off 10 overs. They were well supported by first changers Pierce Rosman (1 – 16) and Pranav Hebbalu (1 – 10), and we soon had them in trouble at 4 – 43 when unfortunately the rains came and we had to settle for a draw. Unbeknown to us at this stage we would meet again in the last round.

36

Round 3 v Canterbury Wests:

We were keen to improve on the positive signs from the week before and started well with the ball and in the field having Canterbury Wests at 3 for 31, however they got away from us with a number of partnerships to finish with 230 off their 50 overs. While the score was a little more than we wanted (thanks to 43 Sundries!) the boys fielded very well with there being 8 catches, a stumping and a direct hit run out for our best fielding performance of the season to date. Sam Begg was on fire taking 5 for 32 off his 10 overs, combining well with the economical Anurag Yadav (2 for 16), while Pierce Rosman (1 for 21), Nick Austen (1 for 15) and Liam Doherty (1 – 40) also contributed.

We started positively in reply, but then got the wobbles again losing 3 quick wickets to be 4 for 32 after 15 overs. Pat Mynett showed composure and determination to play a lone hand of 56 to go with his 2 catches and a stumping in a Man of the Match performance. Unfortunately we fell well short to be 9 for 117 after our 50 overs, but at least they didn’t get us all out. Mitchell Cotton at number 11 played very well for his highest Rep score of 7 not out.

Round 4 v Central Coast:

First game back after the break and we finally got a game on our own track at ELS Hall. Unfortunately we couldn’t find our fielding form from our last game, dropping a lot of catches enabling Central Coast to post a score of 179. After we had them 4 for 55 in the 20th we could have had them all out for 100 if we’d taken all our catches, and their coach told the boys the same at the end of the game. Best of the bowlers were Sam Begg (2 for 21), Surya Malhotra (2 for 3), Andrew Azize (1 for 17) and Mitchell Cotton (1 for 24).

While we didn’t lose our first wicket till the score was on 27, it took us 15 overs to get there and this put pressure on the incoming batsmen. Like previous games we lost multiple wickets in quick succession and couldn’t recover only making 66. Liam Doherty (11) and Pierce Rosman (11) were the only batsmen to get to double figures.

Round 5 v Manly:

We ventured over to Manly for our next game and loss the toss so was bowling first again. We got an early breakthrough but it all went downhill from there with one of their batsmen compiling a century in setting us 294. To some extent we were our own worst enemy not bowling to the fields set and giving away 42 sundries…a tough day at the office but the boys never gave in in the very hot conditions against the eventual winners of the Competition. Best of the bowlers were Andrew Azize (1 – 32) and Anurag Yadav (1 – 36 off 10).

After some of the batting in previous weeks we focussed hard in training on centre wicket practice trying to hit the gaps, running hard and placing pressure on the fielders and while the scorecard didn’t necessarily show it, there was a marked improvement with four boys getting starts but not being able to go on with it. We also had some better shot selection, determination to not lose their wicket and just occupying the crease….ending up all out for 107 in 41 overs. Best batsmen were Anurag Yadav with 26 to take MoM honours, Pierce Rosman (19), Pat Mynett (15) and Nick Austen (12).

Round 6 v North West Hurricanes:

The last round pitted those next to each other on the ladder in a playoff, and so we knew we were at least in with a chance having previously played NWH and being in a good position to win before the rains came. We finally won a toss and eagerly batted first and while we lost two quick wickets and faced some spirited bowling, we then recovered to be 2 for 43 before a silly run out (is there any other kind?). We seemed to lose our way and got bogged down once again limping to 95 off our 50 overs, but that was better than throwing wickets 37

away and being all out for 60 in 30 overs. Good performances from Sam Begg at number 10 hitting a lusty 24 not out, Anurag Yadav (20) and Andrew Azize (17).

We knew we were in with a chance and had to start well, and that we did, having them 3 for 6 in the fifth over with Sam Begg being the main destroyer again (4 – 21 off 10). They put together a partnership for the fourth wicket but we were then able to pick up a few quick wickets to have them on the ropes at 7 for 59. We found our fielding form again today taking 8 great catches (Hebbalu x 2, Austen x 2), with the last wicket being the best with a flyer to Andrew Azize at fly slip, finally getting our first win bowling the Hurricanes out for 75! Other bowling performances were Nick Austen (1 – 0), Pranav Hebbalu (3 – 11 off 7), and Anurag Yadav (2 – 14 off 10). We kept our best team performance for the last game and even though we didn’t have a huge score the boys were all upbeat and determined to get a win…and that they did.

Conclusion:

I would like to thank all the parents for making my job easier, getting the boys to training and the grounds each week, and providing afternoon tea. I’d also like to thank those that umpired and scored throughout the season as these aren’t the best jobs in the world but I really appreciate mums and dads putting their hand up to help out.

Finally, thanks also to the boys, we had a really tough assignment with so many boys playing up from their normal age group, but no one ever gave up and there were some long days in the field chasing that little red ball about. You will all be able to look back and draw upon this experience and the challenges it brought us but I believe you all improved your skills, learnt some important cricket lessons the hard way, got to play some serious cricket on turf and worked hard to make a team together. You all have the ability to play higher levels of cricket and I hope you continue to trial for NDJCA Rep teams. Good luck and thanks,

Michael Mynett

UNDER 14 – MOORE SHIELD

Welcome to the under 14s Rep team report. I would like to start by saying during the winter 2 development squads were run due to the overwhelming response for this age group. During the official trials 32 kids turned up. The 3 selectors chose a rep team with 5 new players giving the team a new look. The draw pitted us against the 2 best teams in the comp Georges River (premiers) and North Shore (who lost in the semis to Georges River). We lost those 2 games due to poor batting displays. There was no application shown by our batsmen, plenty of loose shots and no respect to a good ball. As a result our bowlers could not save us even though they bowled well against good opposition. In the last 2 games we batted well and our bowlers were excellent and we recorded 2 wins. We also had a bye much to everyone’s dismay.

We had some good individual performances through the year as there are some really talented boys in this team but unfortunately we could not get enough players going well on the same day. Reps is much harder than Saturday morning cricket and the boys need to learn to apply themselves better at training and in rep games to succeed regularly at this level. Scoring 40 plus runs in Saturday morning cricket is good but that does not translate to good scoring in reps. We only had 1 player score over 50 runs in total for the entire rep season from our 4 games and only player with a batting average over 20 runs (Harry Manenti)

Next year will be another challenge as they move to a turf competition.

Thanks to all the parents for getting the boys to and from training and games and the support they showed as well as looking after drinks, afternoon teas, scoring etc

Thanks … Terry Rogers and Philip Azize

UNDER 11 – PRESIDENTS CUP

Squad: Harry Bowen (c), Jack McFadden (vc), Marcus Badaoui, Jack Dwyer, Arinath Gobinath, Callum James, Harrison McKinnon, Hugh Sims, Jesse Tockuss, Zane Watson, Micah Williams, Andrew Wright.

This season provided a great opportunity for the boys to experience representative cricket for the first time. The team demonstrated a great deal of improvement over the six rounds, and were well rewarded with a nail-biting victory in our final game. Each player made significant improvements to their own individual game, and as a team we grew into the challenges of playing longer form cricket against high quality oppositions. A special congratulations to our captain, Harry Bowen, who led the team superbly and showed us all what a great ‘cricket brain’ he has.

Many thanks to all the parents for their commitment and assistance during the season, especially to Stuart James for his magnificent efforts in leading the scoring duties, and Daniel McFadden and Ray Watson for their fantastic work in umpiring whilst our team was batting.

Greg Williams (Coach)

Round 1 North Shore A 6/213 Northern District 11/48

A tough start to the competition, coming up against one of the top sides, and learning some harsh lessons about batting against spin bowling. Callum and Marcus were in amongst the wickets, and Marcus demonstrated his excellent skills in the field with a catch and a run out. Jesse got us off to a promising start opening the batting, however with one of their bowlers taking 8 wickets, we were prevented from putting together any meaningful partnerships.

Round 2 Northern District 11/65 North West Sydney Hurricanes 1/67

Probably our most disappointing performance, however we were without a number of our regular players for this fixture. Whilst the scorebook points to a comprehensive opposition victory, we came very close to drawing this game – with a major downpour occurring shortly after stumps. The boys were starting to learn to value their wicket more, and the importance of batting through all their overs. Marcus was top score with the bat, and Harry was our only wicket taker.

Round 3 Hornsby 5/109 Northern District 11/94

A much closer game, and one that we certainly could have won. An excellent start with the ball, Jesse claiming an early wicket, and Arinath (0/9 from 7 overs) and Andrew (0/4 from 4 overs) keeping things tight. Callum snared 2/16 in a great display of line and length bowling, with Jack M, Zane and Harrison all helping to keep the opposition run rate down. We finally managed to bat through our full 40 overs, with Jack D batting through most of the innings, and sharing in great partnerships with Jack M and Andrew in particular. Arinath batted really well under great pressure, however as a team we

40

found it hard to keep the scoreboard ticking consistently and fell short of a total we knew we could have reached.

Round 4 Central Coast 10/134 Northern District 8/90

Another good display in the field, however our batting performance was once again held back by a relatively slow run rate. Getting the balance between not losing wickets, and keeping the scoreboard ticking over was proving to be a difficult one. Arinath, Hugh and Andrew all picked up multiple wickets, with Zane, Marcus and Jesse all taking valuable scalps as well. Micah bowled very economically (4 overs for only 6 runs), whilst Andrew (3 catches) and Jack D (2 catches, including the catch of the season) were the stars in the field. Marcus led the counter attack from first drop with a well-made 19, with Andrew top scoring with an excellent 25.

Round 5 Northern District 11/74 Manly Warringah 1/84

Playing the eventual competition winners on their home ground was a difficult assignment, however the team stuck to their plans and put in a pleasing performance against a much stronger opposition. Marcus, Jesse and Arinath were the only batsmen to make double figures, and 3 run outs didn’t help us in posting a challenging total. Jesse, Micah, Jack M and Callum all bowled economically and made sure that Manly had to work hard for their runs, whilst Arinath took the only wicket to fall (thanks to another great catch from Jack D).

Round 6 North West Sydney Hurricanes 9/71 Northern District 10/72

We certainly saved our best effort till last, and it was truly a team performance, with everybody contributing to a well-deserved victory. Jesse led the bowling attack with 3/12, and was supported with great spells from Callum (1/4 from 4 overs), Zane (1/6) and our illustrious captain Harry (2/2). Hugh produced a magnificent spell of off-spin bowling, taking 2/6 from 6 overs – a great reward for his perseverance with this difficult craft throughout the season. Jack D and Hugh got us off to a good start with the bat, with Marcus and Jesse continuing the good work in the middle order. With a few quick wickets falling, our captain Harry led from the front with his best batting performance of the season and was our top-scorer. Harrison and Zane made valuable contributions that edged us closer to the target, and with the scores level and only one wicket in hand, Callum (supported by Micah at the other end) opened his shoulders and hit the winning run to end our season in the most spectacular manner.

NORTHERN DISTRICT CRICKET ASSOCIATION JUNIORS

UNDER 15 REPRESENTATIVE TOURING TEAM

ARMIDALE CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIP JANUARY 2015

In January we took the Under 15 representative team to Armidale to compete in the Walter Taylor Shield. The squad for the tournament was as follows:- Jamie McLeod (c) Dundas United Brayden Dilley Epping Bulls

Jayden Brown Dundas United Ashton Whitting Concord Briars

Anshul Baruah Dundas United Elliot Carwardine Epping Bulls

Harrison Kilby Dundas United Sharan Rajendran Carlingford

Justin Porter Dundas United Ben Smith North Ryde RSL

James Hirsch Dundas United Brendan Ford Ryde Hunters Hill

Phil McLeod Coach Paul Kilby Manager

The tournament was played over 4 days and each game was played on turf wickets. 7 teams competed in the competition which was made up of local teams from Armidale, Lismore, Tamworth, Hunter Valley as well as Sydney teams from Penrith and West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook.

Game 1 V Armidale at Sportsground

Our first game was against the tournament hosts at the No 1 ground.

Jamie won the toss and sent Armidale in to bat which paid dividends early with Ben taking a wicket in the first over followed by Jayden taking another not long after to have the home team 2/10. Armidale then recovered to reach 126. 10 bowlers were used and wickets were shared with Elliot and Jayden taking 2 each and Ben, Brendan, Harrison, Sharan and Anshul taking 1 each. Elliot had a great day in the field taking 2 catches and a run out. Harrison, Brendan, Brayden and Justin also took catches.

Our run chase got off to a solid start with Brayden (33) and Ashton (11) putting on 37 for the first wicket and we ended up passing their score with 5 wickets in hand after 31 overs. Jayden batted very well for his 46 (retired No.).

As we were playing the hosts of the tournament, the local press were at the ground throughout the day and a number of the boys appeared in action on the local news that night and also in the paper the following day.

Game 2 V Tamworth at Sportsground

After a comfortable win the previous day against Armidale, our opponents today were much stronger competition.

Batting first we got off to a bad start losing a wicket in the first over. Ashton (12) and Anshul steadied the ship to put on 30 odd. Anshul ended up being the back bone of our innings with a well made 50. A couple partnerships between himself and Harrison (11) and Justin (9) got us to a total of 130.

Tamworth ended up easily passing our total with 8 wickets in hand. Their opener scoring 85 no. and batted very well. Tamworth were a well drilled team and were focused from the start. We were flat and probably took them too lightly given our comfortable win from the day before. Tamworth would go on to win the Tournament.

Game 3 V West Pennant Hills at Harris Park

Our next game was a 25 over each match against a local Sydney club team who have been entering a team in the tournament for a few years.

42

Jamie won the toss and sent the opposition in to bat. They were soon in early trouble to be 1 for 4 with Anshul taking the first wicket. That soon became 4/16 with Elliot, Jayden and Justin taking wickets. At the end of their 25 overs they reached 6/93. Anshul ended up taking 3/13. Brayden, Jayden, Harrison and Ashton took catches.

Jayden (35 retired) and Jamie (17) got the team off to a great start with an opening partnership of 66. We ended up passing their score with 7 wickets in hand and 6 overs remaining. The winning runs came from a reverse pull shot for 4 from Harrison (17 no) to the delight of the crowd !.

Game 4 V Lismore at Lambert Park

Our final game was a 40 over match in a battle for 3rd spot against Lismore. Our opposition won the toss and sent us in on a wicket that played a few tricks early.

After a slow start our batsmen gained momentum and we ended up with an impressive 4/175 off our 40 overs. A number of boys contributed with the bat. Ashton (10 retired), Brayden (36) & James (18) gets a special mention as he had not been well for most of the trip and he came out and played his shots just when the team needed it. Anshul (22) and Jamie (38) continued on with aggressive batting and there was some more big hitting from Jayden (24 No.) and Harrison (8 No.) in the final overs.

Lismore got off to a flyer with both their openers taking on our bowlers and it looked like it was game on. Ben bowled their opener to claim our first wicket with the score on 28 off 6 overs. Some tight bowling and great fielding then became 3/56 with Brendan bowling their other opener and Elliot running out their no.4. Justin (3/8) and Harrison (2/11) continued the tight bowling and Lismore were all out for 102. Elliot and Ashton also took wickets and Brayden, Harrison, Elliot and Ashton took catches.

The local TV crew were again at the game and a few more boys made appearances on the local news that night.

The team enjoyed another successful tour finishing 3rd in the tournament winning 3 games and 1 loss to the eventually winners.

For many of the boys this was their 3rd trip away together and was very well organised from the people in Armidale. The boys had a great time, some excellent cricket was played and we all enjoyed our team dinners together each night.

I would also like thank Phil McLeod for the time and effort he continues to put in to the team. The boys have enjoyed success, a winning culture and continued improvement under his coaching.

NORTHERN DISTRICT CRICKET ASSOCIATION JUNIORS

UNDER 14 REPRESENTATIVE TOURING TEAM

NEWCASTLE CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIP JANUARY 2015

In January we took the Under 14 representative team to Newcastle to compete in the Graeme Malcolm Shield. The squad for the tournament was as follows:- Albert Brooks St Patricks College Brendan Ford Ryde Hunters Hill Harry Brooks St Patricks College Ethan Garrett Dundas United Charlie Cale Epping Bulls Fraser Garrett West Ryde Rovers Liam Doherty Dundas United Henry Kirk Dundas United Ryan Federow Carlingford Waratah Oscar Kirk Epping Bulls Thomas Federow Carlingford Waratah Surya Malhotra Epping Bulls Noel Ford Coach Cassandra Kirk Manager Northern Districts JCA accepted an invitation from the Newcastle JCA to enter a team in this season’s annual Under 14 carnival, the Graeme Malcolm Shield, conducted during the summer holidays. The carnival provided an excellent opportunity for our representative players to play quality cricket against solid opposition whilst gaining all important turf wicket experience.

Whilst the squad contained only 4 of the regular rep season players, we were fortunate to have very talented and committed cricketers join in, all of whom played very well throughout the 5 days of the carnival. Most of the additional players came from the NDs Presidents Cup squad, supplemented by 3 younger siblings who are also of representative standard. Although we were somewhat of an eclectic team on paper, on the field we proved to be very competitive, not only winning 3 of the 4 matches we played, but always demonstrating a positive attitude and good sportsmanship.

Our first match, and our only loss (by 31 runs), was against Parramatta, a strong outfit in this age group and rep season finalists. Whilst they have had the wood on us in recent seasons, we took the game right up to them, controlling most of the match to the extent that the opposition coach commented on how strong our team was. Parramatta ended up winning the carnival, but publicly commented that the toughest match they had that week was against NDs.

Unfortunately the rain hit the next two days, causing cancellations of matches, with a make-up session of indoor cricket arranged by the carnival organisers. Great fun for all, however, it is safe to say that our guys are better cricketers outdoors than indoors.

In order to get back on the paddock, the carnival organisers arranged 2 x 25 over matches on synthetic pitches on Day 4. This proved to be beneficial to our team in that we secured two good wins, first of all against Hunter Valley by 8 wickets in the morning match, followed by a 25 run win against North Shore in the afternoon. All players contributed to both wins, and to knock off a North Shore team was a highlight for everyone, parents included!

The final day had us back on turf on a huge first grade ground against Hornsby. This was another match we controlled from the outset, winning comfortably by 8 wickets. The team played hard all day to squeeze everything out of themselves and the match to conclude a successful carnival.

44

All players consistently made solid contributions throughout the carnival. The highlights were:

Albert Brooks – 5 wickets and excellent fielding. Always looked threatening with the ball in hand. Provided useful runs with the bat when needed.

Harry Brooks – 7 wickets off his excellent leg spin, including a hat trick against Hunter Valley. Recognised as one of the best performed bowlers of the carnival.

Charlie Cale – 80 runs aggregate, 4 wickets and excellent fielding. One of the players of the carnival and prominent in every match.

Liam Doherty – solid batting and consistent high quality fielding. Took good catches at critical times.

Ryan Federow – 37 runs vs Parramatta as an opener. Penetrating opening bowling spells every match and excellent cover fielding.

Tom Federow – 24 runs vs Hunter Valley, 4 wickets and always menacing in the field. Frequently displayed his quality all round cricketing skills.

Brendan Ford – 14 runs off 4 balls vs North Shore to turn the game around, solid wicket keeping (6 dismissals) and excellent captaincy against Hornsby.

Ethan Garrett – 26 runs vs North Shore, quality fast bowling. Always sharp in the field and took every opportunity to impose himself on the match.

Fraser Garrett – 27 n.o vs Hornsby, 5 wickets and solid in the field. His off spin bowling was accurate and difficult for the opposition batsmen.

Henry Kirk – 51 retired vs Hornsby, 4 wickets, as well as always being prominent in every facet of every game. Another strong all round performance in the carnival.

Oscar Kirk – an important innings in the match against Hornsby to get us over the line, as well as consistent and threatening fielding.

Surya Malhotra – took on higher order batting responsibilities well, accurate bowling and took several catches to help get the team over the line.

A special thank you to Cassandra Kirk for all your hard work in the lead up to and during carnival week, as well as the parents and supporters for your ongoing assistance.

Congratulations on a job well done lads. It was a pleasure to work with you.

Noel Ford,

Tournament Coach

NORTHERN DISTRICT CRICKET UMPIRES ASSOCIATION President’s Report

On behalf of my other regular umpiring members, I present the Annual Report for the Season 2014 - 2015.

This season we had a change in Administration with Secretary John passing the bat over to the new Secretary Homer Paxton who took on the role of appointing the Umpires for the Senior and Junior games, Junior Representatives and the President Cup games. Being new to the position Homer was a bit rusty at the start but with a bit less chatter and more concentration he got on with the job. Homer was ably assisted by Treasurer John Crane if he needed assistance.

No sooner in the job Homer carried on and continued to chase up a number of Umpires for the NDCA competitions. Consequently we saw a big increase in the available umpires for all games and also working very closely with the NDCA Executive in the allocation of Umpires in the A Grade and A Reserve games in the NCU competitions. Homer must be congratulated for his efforts in the appointments of many umpires during the season.

Ten Umpires made themselves available to umpire the Juniors for the NSWDCA Junior Representative games during October and November, the Shields being Foster U10, Creak U11, Cawsey U12, Gee U13, Moore U14, Weblin U15 and Watson U16. Our thanks to Homer Paxton, John Vanderlight, Peter Honeywood, Brian Wiseman, Vimalan Shan, Simon Fairlie, Nirmal De Silva, Ian Sinden, Jude Fonseka and Greg Berriman. John Vanderlight was appointed by NSWDCA for a Cawsey Shield U12 Quarter Final and then their Final as well as a Semi-final for the Open Martin Shield.

Fourteen Umpires stood in the Senior games and twelve stood as well in the Junior Semis and Finals. We convey our thanks to Peter Tate, John Vanderlight, Greg Berriman, Nirmal De Silva, Ian Sinden, Ron Vidler, Christiaan Kennedy, Craig Menzies, Jude Fonseka, Ajit Madan, Homer Paxton, Peter Honeywood, Vimalan Shan, Steve McAppion, Andrew Yarad, Darryle Adams, Andrew Tenni, Joshua Tompsett, Greg Carmock, Andrew Simpson and Kadhirvelou Dhandopani.

Umpires Greg Berriman, John Vanderlight, Nirmal De Silva, Vimalan Shan and Ian Sinden umpired the U11-12 and U15 President Cup games during the Season, well done.

Congratulations to all those who enjoyed the success and experience during the season and we look forward to seeing you all in 2015 - 2016.

Bob Flint, President

CRICKET ASSOCIATION

These are the teams who have, according to the Association’s records, played in the competitions during the NDCA’s 103 years of existence. Many of these clubs have vanished into the mists of time, some merged with other clubs, old ones went, new ones joined and many who were there at the beginning are still there and they helped form the nucleus of what very quickly became a strong and successful Association
