Following an uncertain start, due to almost predictable rain on Thursdays or Fridays during October and November, all grades were keenly contested with final placings often decided in the last round. Fortunately better weather had arrived by March which produced an excellent series of finals, some very close results and new names on premiership trophies. Congratulations to those clubs that were successful. The season saw several changes on the Executive that meant only 3 people continued in the role they held in the first season of the merger. This, along with not being able to find a suitable replacement for our Umpires' Officer, created some initial problems but these were largely overcome and I would like to commend all Office Bearers and the Umpires' Executive for their efforts in managing the issues that arose during the season. Clubs should not underestimate the amount of time, effort and dedication these people contribute on a voluntary basis to run our large organisation. In our review of the season we identified areas where improvements can be made and steps will be taken to implement changes in the coming season. Clubs can contribute to this process by ensuring their own administration actively assists the objective of conducting a community based sporting organisation where the spirit of the game takes precedence. The Patronage of Camberwell Magpies proved to be a positive and beneficial alliance. Discussions are continuing that should ensure we work together to develop cricket in our region over the coming seasons for the benefit of all concerned. In particular I would like to acknowledge the support and interest of Peter Warner and Russell Thomas in developing this relationship. Our Junior Section continues to flourish under sound administration and clubs are to be congratulated for the effort they devote to this important area 5 President’s Report of the association. Important clubs in the region continue to show interest in joining ECA and this can be attributed to the opportunity we provide for top standard turf, synthetic and junior competitions supported by a sound structure of administration. And now our thoughts start to focus on the season ahead. A celebration of 100 years of organised cricket in the eastern suburbs. It will be a time to recognise the achievements of those clubs and individuals that moulded the association we have today. However it should also be a time to ensure future generations are motivated by the standards we set in providing a community resource and upholding the traditional values of our great game. Unless you propose attending the bi-centenary I urge everyone to become involved in this unique occasion. KEVIN NOY President 6 Executive Council Report Our third season of Eastern Cricket was another that bought with it some strange happenings, crazy weather and good cricket. We lost only one club, Camberwell Magpies from the previous season with other clubs adding or removing sides as they normally do when their areas grow or contract. One new club did join us and we welcomed Mazenod Old Collegians Cricket Club who managed to acquire a Turf Wicket in times when councils and the like are reluctant to install Turf pitches. They bought with them four sides, two Turf and two synthetic. The major news story for year 2001 was the attack of September 11 on the World Trade Centre, a long way from Melbourne but still Eastern Cricket felt the impact of this terrible tragedy. The Turf ground located at the Army barracks was closed when the armed forces were placed on high alert after the events in New York. This created all sorts of grading and redraw problems due to the two clubs placing their effected sides into the synthetic competition. After sorting out most of the pre-season problems, the season got under way in its usual fashion, rain on the first weekend of October. Through out the rest of the season the weather did not favour cricket. You could count on one hand the number of days over 30°C. During the early part of the season the weather was so bad that one synthetic side only managed to get onto the park in mid November missing the first four games. Once the season was in full swing, things progressed fairly smoothly on the playing side The Executive was pleased to note the number of reported players was down from last season, most likely due to the cooler climate. In late November the Executive was contacted by our Patron Club in Camberwell Magpies to see if we could use their main turf ground during the VCA country week in January. The Turf Wicket committee was in favour of the idea so the Dunstan Shield sides were contacted, with Heathmont and 7 Executive Council Report Surrey Hills agreeing to transfer their round 8 clash to the Camberwell Sports Ground. Everyone that participated agreed it was a worthwhile exercise and the Association appreciates Camberwell Magpies support. After a few problems were resolved towards the end of the season, the summer finished with a whimper. However once the finals started the rain seemed to end. There was only one final that was effected by adverse weather in the three weeks of the final series. One of the strange features for the season and the finals was an amazing two tied semi-finals, one in Dunstan and the other in D Grade synthetic. Congratulations to all the premiership winners. Sponsorship remains a valuable tool for your Executive to maintain a sound association and the two major sponsors Kookaburra Sports and Maddocks Sports continued their affiliation . This is the last season of their three year contract and we look forward to fruitful discussions with them for the coming centenary season. In closing I would like to thank the hard working Executive, ably lead by Kevin Noy in his first season, for their assistance through out the year. I especially would like to thank the three Vice Presidents, Craig Tobias, Dennis Butler and Greg Arvidsson who I ring constantly with one problem or another, I hope their partners give them time off next season to continue their good work. ROD PATTERSON Secretary/Manager 8 Appreciation The Association has been well supported by a number of organisations and individuals. This support has been extremely important to us and we wish to recognise and record our appreciation to the following: • The local councils of Boroondara, Knox, Manningham, Maroondah, Monash, Stonnington, Whitehorse and Yarra for their efforts in providing the excellent facilities enjoyed by our clubs. In particular the overall standard of turf wickets is the envy of other Associations.
