  • Mathematical Models for Cricket Team Selection
Mathematical Models for Cricket Team Selection Hamish Thorburn Dr Michael Forbes The University of Queensland 26/02/2015 1 1 Abstract An attempt was made to try and select the Australian Test Cricket Team for then-upcoming series against India in December-January 2014-2015. Data was collected pertaining to 37 Australian cricket players, relating to both recent form (the 12 months prior to commencement of the project) and career form across multiple formats of the game. The team was selected using a mixed-integer- programming (MIP) model, after processing the statistics collected to create usable parameters for the model. It was found that the team selected by the MIP model shared only 5 of the 11 players with the actual team selected by the Australian Board of Selectors to compete in the series. When altering parameters of the model, it was found that the batting diversity of the team could be doubled while only losing 0.008 of the available talent of selected players. The reduced costs were calculated to determine how close unselected players were to being selected, and what they would have to increase their batting/bowling averages to be considered for selection. Finally, we compared the ICC player ratings to our calculated batting and bowling indices, to try to determine the optimal weighting between the different statistics. It was found that batting average was most important in batting performance (but was more important in test matches than one-day matches) and that bowling average and economy were equally important in bowling performance. 2 Introduction 2.1 The Game of Cricket Cricket is a sport composing of opposing teams of 11 players each side.

STEVE WAUGH Published 16.3.17 It was Test match cricket that you couldn’t take your eyes off It was predictable but still disappointing that a brilliant Test match in which two sides had to draw upon all their reserves of mental and physical toughness in an old fashioned dogfight that saw conflict, confrontation, skill and tension before a remarkable comeback from the home, was somewhat forgotten in the aftermath of the DRS controversy. That said, I could understand the talk, the speculation and the spin each expert gave on what transpired in Bangalore. After all, the captains involved are two of the most popular and revered figures in the game today. Hopefully, the incident is behind both teams and not still smouldering as they ready themselves for the third Test in Ranchi. I was in Bangalore to witness the first three days of the Test and it was an engrossing game on a difficult pitch where batsmen could get runs if they punished the loose balls and capitalised on moments of good fortune. There was more than enough variable bounce to keep the quick bowlers interested and prodigious turn at times to enable the spinners to dominate. Both teams had their opportunities to seize the momentum but chasing 150 or more in the fourth innings was always going to be a demanding examination for the Australians particularly with Ashwin and Jadeja ready to restrict and then ultimately strangle as would an anaconda its prey. Looking ahead, Australia are in Ranchi for the venue’s debut Test without their strike bowler Mitchell Starc.

  • Cricket and the Law: Ball Tampering, Contracts and Enterprise Bargaining Agreements
CRICKET AND THE LAW: BALL TAMPERING, CONTRACTS AND ENTERPRISE BARGAINING AGREEMENTS CHRIS DAVIES* AND SAM LANSKY** ABSTRACT Cricket in Australia has faced two recent crises, the first being the prolonged enterprise bargaining negotiations between Cricket Australia (CA) and the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) that resulted in a situation where, for a few months, Cricket Australia had no contracted players. This meant that during this period CA had no players to fulfil its contractual broadcasting obligations. When the matter was finally resolved it is very much in favour of the players as CA backed down on it position of not using the revenue sharing model. It is suggested this highlights that it is players who now hold the greater bargaining power when it comes to negotiations. The second crisis involved the ball tampering incident in South Africa, with CA banning three players from playing first-class cricket in Australia for up to twelve months. It is suggested that given the severity of the incident and its late season timing, the penalties were reasonable and therefore legal under the terms of the players¶ contracts. I INTRODUCTION During 2017-18 cricket in Australia faced two significant crises. The first was the GUDZQRXWQHJRWLDWLRQVEHWZHHQ&ULFNHW$XVWUDOLD &$ DQGWKH$XVWUDOLDQ&ULFNHWHUV¶ Association (ACA) in what has been described as the most significant pay dispute in Australian cricket history,1 one that, temporarily at least, brought professional cricket in Australia to a standstill. Eventually, a new Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA) was negotiated in time for the threatened 2017-18 Ashes series against England to go ahead as scheduled.

  • MEDIA RELEASE Aussie Batsmen Set to Don the Mo in Movember
MEDIA RELEASE Aussie batsmen set to don the Mo in Movember THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 25, 2018 – Australia T20 International captain Aaron Finch is leading the Mo-brigade this summer as a trio of Aussie cricketers throw their support behind the Movember Foundation’s ambition to stop men dying too young. Finch is no stranger to growing moustaches in November and raising money for the men’s health charity, but he said there’s more to Movember than meets the lip. “It’s really important to keep encouraging men to get checked out and not be afraid to talk about health issues, whether it be mental health or physical health,” Finch said. “If one person can take something positive out of the month, then it’s been a good campaign.” Last year, over $240,000 was raised for the Movember Foundation through Cricket Australia and the wider cricketing community, and with the partnership entering its 11th straight year in 2018, sights are set on an even greater fundraising target. The Movember Foundation is the official men’s health charity partner of Cricket Australia, and is an intrinsic part of the Cricket Cares program, which aims to use cricket as an agent of change in the community. Western Australian big-hitter Marcus Stoinis and Victorian Captain Peter Handscomb will join Finch in growing Mo’s in the name of men’s health, with the latter participating for the first time due to the cause being close to his heart. “I’m on board for Movember this year because I’ve personally been affected by prostate cancer; my father had it so it’s really close to me.
