On bayarea.com the other hand, if you’re a San Francisco native and you and your pooch need some fresh air, then Baker Beach is the perfect option for a sunny Saturday.Dogs are permitted off-leash on Baker Beach if you’re north of Lobos Creek, but they must be on a leash south of Lobos Creek. And fair warning: Baker Beach is also a nude beach, but I doubt your dog will mind.

CRISSY FIELD (SAN FRANCISCO)

For more views of the Golden Gate, Alcatraz, and even Marin, Crissy Field is a scenic spot that also happens to be a dog-friendly beach. VALLEY ACCESS ELECTRONIC MAGAZINE/6 ESPLANADE BEACH (PACIFICA)

While you’ll find plenty of pups at the beaches that stretch along the Pacifica coastline, Esplanade is the only dog-friendly beach that is “officially” leash-free. This scenic hideaway is located just twenty minutes from San Francisco, which is perfect if your dog isn’t a fan of the car. Enjoy the peace and quiet and maybe even spot a whale or two while you take in the breathtaking views of the ocean. VALLEY ACCESS ELECTRONIC MAGAZINE/8 Your Comfort is Key in Silicon Valley Hotel When it comes to travelers to Palo Alto, there is a high demand for hotel space as well as the myriad of questions and needs that must be met during the visitors’ stay in Silicon Valley. However, there is one hotel on El Camino Real that has found a viable solution to help their guests get their needs met, in style. That would be the Comfort Inn Palo Alto (http://www.paloaltoci.com/), a member of Choice Hotels, and one of the 10 hotel brands under Choice. (https://www.choicehotels.com/) General Manager Denise Wallace says her hotel, with 69 rooms, is one of the busiest in the area with average occupancy rate in the high 90 percent range. She attributes her success to competitive rates as well as the location, which attracts a wide variety of travelers. Variety of travelers The Bay Area is a high target destination for business as well as tourism and college visitation. When it comes to finding a hotel in the Silicon Valley, there are many choices for style, amenities and budgets. Meeting the needs of her guests can be a challenge, though. Not only does she receive business travelers, but many people with medical needs who are patients themselves, or have family members at Stanford Hospitals or VA Hospital and want to stay nearby. Then there are the visiting faculties at Stanford, parents of Stanford students, as well as those who are here to compete in, or watch, athletic games. All of these guests have one thing in common: They all have questions about where to eat, shop, mail packages, make copies and learn how to get around. More pressure on staff Just fielding questions can be a challenge, as often, there is only one person at the desk at a small hotel. This is where Wallace says that AreaOwl is so important to her and her guests. AreaOwl.com is an online tool to help visitors with a range of local information. When the, often tired and hungry, guests complete their check-in process, the AreaOwl tablet is right there on the counter showing a slideshow of delicious looking dishes from local restaurants. Very few guests can resist asking where these dishes are served. By tapping the tablet screen, visitors can quickly find what they are looking for, or browse the other local choices on their own PC or smartphone in the comfort of their room. Information on local places to eat, play, shop, take care of personal or business needs, or even get emergency help, all in one place - just a few clicks away. “Without question, we constantly refer our guests to AreaOwl, the online concierge service,” says Wallace. Wallace says her staff can’t give her guests the details AreaOwl provides. “We are a small hotel, so to try and answer all of these questions is a huge challenge. Front desk people in a small hotel are answering phones, making reservations, checking people in and out all at the same time. AreaOwl answers questions in a way that staff just can’t. Besides, not all our staff has eaten at all the local restaurants, so they don’t know what kind of food is served at every place. And, we don’t know what each guests’ preferences are. If a guest is looking for a restaurant, AreaOwl can show pictures of the food, menus, hours of operation, and an interactive map that shows its location.”

VALLEY ACCESS ELECTRONIC MAGAZINE/9 “When we first started using AreaOwl over 2 years ago, it was still on a desktop PC and guests could only use it in the lobby. It listed only a limited number of restaurants in our neighborhood. Now, it’s all on the web so guests can use it in on their own phone, anytime, anywhere. It also lists much more than just restaurants, and it covers all the cities in Silicon Valley. It’s getting better every day!” “Common questions from guests are transportation, copy and printing services, post office, grocery stores, drugstores, and of course, restaurants. We help them find some of the local choices on AreaOwl using our tablet; but it doesn’t take long for them to want to look around themselves. They are very happy when we tell them they can go to AreaOwl.com to access the same information, right on their phone, right in their room, right at their fingertips.” Wonderful Time Wallace also tells a story about a compliment she received from a guest who had a wonderful time, thanks to AreaOwl. With a few hours to kill, the guest found the (https://museum.stanford.edu/) as she was browsing the Local Interests section on AreaOwl. Just a stone’s throw away from the Comfort Inn Palo Alto, the guest was able to spend a few enjoyable hours at this little gem on the Stanford campus. Wallace admits, “If it wasn’t listed on AreaOwl, I don’t think our staff would have thought about suggesting the Cantor Arts Center to her. AreaOwl really helps improve our guest service.” For hotels, AreaOwl is a free guest service platform that can help your guests have a better time while take some pressure off your guest-service staff. VALLEY ACCESS ELECTRONIC MAGAZINE/10 MAGNOLIA JAZZ BAND So here's that Tip I promised: How well do YOU prepare? More would be better. And usually LOTS more wouldn't hurt.

For me and the band, thorough preparation precedes every performance.

First, many conversations set the scene. Where, when, what's the occasion, what mood do you want, and any special requests?

We scout out the best location for the band, plan to pace ourselves with the event's timeline, and coordinate with the planner, caterer, DJ, and photographer, to assure that everything will go smoothly as planned.

When we arrive we've already practiced the tunes we'll be playing -- our familiar old favorites as well as the new special songs.

Once we're finally at the location, we greet our colleagues, set up our equipment, tune up, and make a quick sound check.

We talk about similar events we've entertained at in recent years, and we're ready for "show time".

And all this careful preparation always pays off.

So the next time you see us at a wedding or a party, realize that we've already been preparing for you.

And now that we're talking about wedding & party music...

Labor Day and Halloween are just a few weeks away. You might be involved in planning a holiday party.

And if you or a friend are engaged to get married, you might also be involved with planning the wedding.

Where can you preview us? Here (see details below, and call 408-245-9120 about last-minute additions.)
