What you now hold in your hands is our lifeblood. After all, on some days all we have left is our belief that the legendary Weisses Rössl, which has existed for over 500 years, will continue to do so for a long time to come. In this ground-breaking book, Derek B. Scott examines the cultural transfer of operetta from the German stage to Britain and the USA and offers a historical and critical survey of these operettas and their music. In the period 1900–1940, over sixty operettas were produced in the West End, and over seventy on Broadway. A study of these stage works is important for the light they shine on a variety of social topics of the period – from modernity and gender relations to new technology and new media – and these are investigated in the individual chapters. German-Language Theatre in Milwaukee, 1885-1909 William Grange University of Nebraska Lincoln, NE 68588-0201 The history of German-language theatre in Milwaukee is bound together with the history of German-speaking settlers in Wisconsin and with the theatre culture of Germany as it unfolded after the 1848 revolution. The two histories at first glance seem to have nothing to do with one another; upon closer analysis, however, one discovers a fascinating association between the two— in fact, there are even instances of the two influencing each other. -

As an alternative to the prevailing literature, which has approached this form of musical theater mostly through broad surveys and detailed studies of a handful of well‐known masterpieces, my dissertation presents a montage of loosely connected, previously unconsidered case studies. Each chapter examines one or two highly significant, but radically unfamiliar, moments in the history of operetta during Austria’s five successive political eras in the first half of the twentieth century. Exploring operetta’s importance for the image of Vienna, these vignettes aim to supply new glimpses not only of a seemingly obsolete art form but also of the urban and cultural life of which it was a part. Bruckner: August 1873 A photo essay by Gilles Houle On the 18th of August, 1873 (the Birthday of Franz-Josef) Anton Bruckner was sitting at the organ loft during the celebration of the solemn Mass in honor of the Emperor of Austria. It always ends with a fantastic organ improvisation on the theme of the « Kaiser » . But during the Summer of 1873, a serious cholera epidemic eventually drives Anton Bruckner out of Vienna. The White Horse Inn in Marienbad Towards the end of August, 1873, Bruckner makes his stop in Marienbad (Mariánské Lázneě) for a mineral water cure, Bruckner was staying at the « White Horse Inn » (« Weißen Rößl Inn ») , located at Number 5063 Kurgast (today, Černý kun) . Its brasserie-restaurant welcomed the public on the ground-floor. The building (with 2 upper-floors) is L-shaped and accessible on 2 perpendicular streets. (It is just Site plan for the White Horse Inn opposite the sumptuous Hotel « Excelsior », which was only a few steps from the famous « Colonnade » .) At that intersection (also on the ground-floor of the same building) was the popular local grocery-store owned by Mister Friedrich Benisch (at Nummer 54 Poštovní Street) . He could, among others things, buy smoked meat, coffee, and paper. Bruckner enjoyed the quiet of his hotel-room, allowing him to polish-up the manuscripts of his 2nd and 3rd Symphonies which he hoped to present to Richard Wagner. The first draft of the 3rd Symphony had already been completed in Vienna, on 23 February 1873. He finished the Adagio on the 24th. The instrumentation of the Scherzo in March. -

Architecture in The Photography Gallery Four generations of Dutch Club architectural photographers The Gallery Club presents Architecture in Photography Four Generations of Dutch Architectural Photographers This exhibition focuses on four generations of Dutch architectural photographers, starting with Jan Versnel, who began working late 1940’s, followed by Jannes Linders and Iwan Baan, and concluding with Ossip van Duivenbode, whose work is from the last decade. The four photographers in this exhibition capture a wide variety of Dutch architecture in their images: from the work of the distinguished Nieuwe Bouwen (Dutch Modernism) architects Brinkman & Van der Vlugt to that of contemporary architects, such as Rem Koolhaas / OMA, Benthem Crouwel Architects, MVRDV and UNStudio / Ben van Berkel. International architects, such as Tadao Ando and SANAA, are also featured in the show. Together these photographers embody more than sixty years of Dutch architectural photography, capturing the development of the urban and architectural landscape. This presents a unique image of time and the special observation of four different photographers, who are inviting the audience to look with a different perspective than the eye of the architect. The Gallery Club is a platform for photography, organized around exhibitions, dinners and events. Exhibition Program EXHIBITIONS AT THE JEWISH MUSEUM VIENNA PALAIS ESKELES/ DOROTHEERGASSE 11 Little Vienna in China October 21, 2020 to June 27, 2021 Immediately after the National Socialists seized power in Austria in March 1938, Jewish women and men were marginalized, humiliated and persecuted. The possibilities to leave the country increasingly dwindled. Harassment, the necessity of leaving all possessions behind, and the fact that many countries sealed off their borders made any prospect of escape difficult. Shanghai was an international special zone that did not require a hard-to-get visa, yet the German authorities required an exit document, whether it was a visa or a ship ticket. Dr. Feng Shan Ho, the Chinese Consul General in Vienna, issued thousands of these life- saving visas, against the Chinese government wishes. For many Austrians, Shanghai, the “City upon the Sea,” represented the last hope for refuge. The voyage there entailed a week-long sea crossing or an exhausting land journey across Siberia. The new home away from home posed great challenges to most refugees. However, the Viennese quickly organized a “Little Vienna” in China, where, in addition to restaurants such as the “White Horse Inn”, there were coffeehouses with Viennese pastry and coffee specialties, sausage stands and wine taverns. Sports clubs and newspapers were founded, and the many refugee artists offered a diverse range of musical evenings, operettas, cabaret and theatrical performances. When the Japanese, who were allied with the German Reich, took Shanghai in 1941, the living conditions continued to worsen. In 1943, a ghetto was established in the rundown district of Hongkou. -

Doch schon um 1900 waren für die meisten deutschen Intellektuellen Geschäft und Theater, Kunst und Kommerz unvereinbare Gegensätze. Selbst für jemanden, der so inten- siv und über lange Jahre hinweg als Unternehmer, Anwalt und Journalist mit dem Geschäftstheater verbunden war wie Max Epstein, schlossen sie einander letztlich aus. Obwohl er lange gut am Theater verdient hatte, kam er kurz vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg zu dem Schluss: „Das Theatergeschäft hat die Bühnenkunst ruiniert“.3 In Großbritannien hingegen, wo Theater seit der Zeit Shakespeares als private, kommerzielle Unternehmen geführt wurden, war es völlig selbstverständlich, im Theater eine Industrie zu sehen. Der Schauspieler, Direktor und Dramatiker Wil- liam Poel bezeugte diese Haltung und war zugleich einer der ganz wenigen, der sie kritisierte.
