Mississippi Natural Heritage Program Special Plants - Tracking List -2018
MISSISSIPPI NATURAL HERITAGE PROGRAM SPECIAL PLANTS - TRACKING LIST -2018- Approximately 3300 species of vascular plants (fern, gymnosperms, and angiosperms), and numerous non-vascular plants may be found in Mississippi. Many of these are quite common. Some, however, are known or suspected to occur in low numbers; these are designated as species of special concern, and are listed below. There are 495 special concern plants, which include 4 non- vascular plants, 28 ferns and fern allies, 4 gymnosperms, and 459 angiosperms 244 dicots and 215 monocots. An additional 100 species are designated “watch” status (see “Special Plants - Watch List”) with the potential of becoming species of special concern and include 2 fern and fern allies, 54 dicots and 44 monocots. This list is designated for the primary purposes of : 1) in environmental assessments, “flagging” of sensitive species that may be negatively affected by proposed actions; 2) determination of protection priorities of natural areas that contain such species; and 3) determination of priorities of inventory and protection for these plants, including the proposed listing of species for federal protection. Comparative Floristic Studies of Georgian Sandhill Ecosystems Reveals a Dynamic Composition of Endemics and Generalists By James M. Long Under the mentorship of Dr. John Schenk ABSTRACT Sandhill habitats are characterized by sandy, xeric soils that contain a unique assemblage of plants and animals. Similar to the broader long-leaf pine (Pinus palustris) and wire grass (Aristida stricta) ecosystem that sandhills are a subset of, agriculture, development, and habitat modifications have caused sandhill ecosystems to become degraded, putting many species at risk of extinction. Previous studies have focused on diversity within individual sandhills, leaving us with an incomplete understanding of how these communities form, what species are endemic, whether endemics are widespread across sandhills, and how species have adapted to these communities. -

Florida Scrub Is a Plant Community Easily Recognized
Florida Scrub Including Scrubby Flatwoods and Scrubby High Pine lorida scrub is a plant community easily recognized FNAI Global Rank: G2/G3 by the dominance of evergreen shrubs and frequent FNAI State Rank: S2 Fpatches of bare, white sand. With more than two Federally Listed Species in S. FL: 32 dozen threatened and endangered species dependent upon scrub, the entire community is itself endangered. Recovery State Listed Species in S. Synonymy Florida scrub in its various phases has been called xeric scrub, sand scrub, big scrub, sand pine scrub, oak scrub, evergreen oak scrub, dune oak scrub, evergreen scrub forest, slash pine scrub, palmetto scrub, rosemary scrub, and rosemary bald. Florida scrubs may be classified as coastal or interior. Scrubs are often named by the dominant plant species, as in rosemary scrub, sand pine scrub, palmetto scrub, or oak scrub. Some authors have confused closed-canopy forests of sand pine trees with scrub. Scrubs that are very recent in origin, usually a result of mans activities, are called pioneer scrubs. Communities intermediate between scrub and pine flatwoods have been called dry or xeric flatwoods but now are referred to as scrubby flatwoods. Communities intermediate between scrub and high pine have been called southern ridge sandhills, hickory scrub, yellow sand scrub, turkey oak scrub, turkey oak barrens, and natural turkey oak barrens, but probably are best referred to as scrubby high pine. -

Davies, Dean Honors College iv ABSTRACT This study documents the vascular plants and common lichens of the Gopher Farm sandhill, Wayne County, Mississippi. The Gopher Farm sandhill is located within the Chickasawhay Ranger District of the DeSoto National Forest and is one of the most northerly located sandhills in the Coastal Plain of Mississippi. The sandhill was surveyed 11 times from the spring of 2011 to the spring of 2012, primarily during the spring and fall. -
Xeric Sandhill Scrub (Coastal Fringe Subtype)
XERIC SANDHILL SCRUB (COASTAL FRINGE SUBTYPE) Concept: Xeric Sandhill Scrub is the longleaf pine community of dry, coarse, infertile sands, which have a low diversity scrub oak layer strongly dominated by Quercus laevis, but which have fairly high cover of Aristida stricta and other herbs rather than the sparse vegetation of the Sand Barrens. The Coastal Fringe Subtype covers examples near the coast which contain characteristic coastal fringe plant species. Distinguishing Features: Xeric Sandhill Scrub is distinguished from most other communities by the presence of a scrub oak layer strongly dominated by Quercus laevis. Quercus marilandica is absent, but Quercus margarettae and Quercus incana are often present. The Coastal Fringe Subtype is distinguished from the Typic Subtype by the presence of characteristic coastal fringe flora, such as Cladina evansii, Rhynchospora megalocarpa, Ilex vomitoria, and Quercus geminata. The Coastal Fringe Subtype generally occurs within a few miles of the coast. Xeric Sandhill Scrub is distinguished from Sand Barren by higher plant cover in the herb layer, especially of Aristida stricta. Bare sand patches of any size are absent unless the soil or vegetation has been disturbed. Lichens and specialized psammophytes such as Stipulicida setacea and Minuartia caroliniana (= Arenaria caroliniana), may be present but are minor in abundance in comparison with Aristida stricta. Synonyms: Pinus palustris / Quercus laevis - Quercus geminata / Vaccinium tenellum / Aristida stricta Woodland (CEGL003589). Ecological Systems: Atlantic Coastal Plain Upland Longleaf Pine Woodland (CES203.281). Sites: Xeric Sandhill Scrub (Coastal Fringe Subtype) occurs on deep sands of relict coastal dunes, beach ridges, river dunes, and Carolina bay rims, in a zone inland of the barrier islands but within a few miles of the coast. -
