CHAPTER I11 THE hllDDLE EAST-ADVENT OF NO. 1 SQUADRON IT became tlie custoni of the people, and even of the authorities, in Britain to refer to all operations in which British troops were engaged, in theatres of war other than France and Belgium, as “ side-shows.” In a sense they were such, and certainly they were for the greater part of the war treated as of secondary iniportance in the matter of equipment ~ and reinforcements. The Germans also regarded the Turkish theatre in much the same light. Both sides believed, and rightly, that the decision on the Western Front in France would settle tlie issues on all other fields. At least on the British side the lot of the troops who were engaged in “the side- shows ” was probably harder than that of those on the main f ront-harder, because supplies and equipment were generally inferior or insufficient, because soldiers’ home leave was almost unknown, and because, as the war lengthened out, commanders on niinor fronts were liable to be hampered and thwarted indefinitely by the demands of “ the general strategical situation.” The Palestine campaign-perhaps the most important of all tlie Allies’ minor-f ront campaigns-was carried to its brilliantly successful conclusion after bitter experience of niuddle, wasted energy, false moves, and inefficient support of earlier operations in the Near East. In 1915the British Army learned its hard lesson in the Gallipoli Peninsula and in hlesopotaniia. By early 1916 the only relief in the sonilre disillusion of the nation was the splendid heart of the men who fought and suffered and died and in part somehow survived in those badly organised ventures. -

As no Canadian Air Force yet existed, thousands of Canadians fought the First World War in British flying units. Canadians first served with the Royal Flying Corps (rfc) or with the Royal Naval Air Service (rnas). These two services amalgamated on 1 April 1918 into the Royal Air Force (raf). In total, an estimated 13,000–22,000 individuals from Canada joined the British flying services. In 1924, the Royal Canadian Air Force (rcaf) was created. With the outbreak of war in September 1939, the rcaf was able to draw on an existing cadre of officers and airmen and also attracted experienced personnel from private enterprise. By 1945, close to 250,000 men and women had served in the rcaf at home and abroad. This guide will illustrate the process of researching an individual’s service, from the essential starting point of service documents to supporting resources for detail and further discovery. When they are about me, I may answer or I may not, but even if I do, if the same question is asked tomorrow, the answer may be different.”1 And he might have said more: that he as mythmaker enjoyed deluding the public concerning his entire background. -

Paul Fox A Privatised Sense of the Past: Flying Officers’ Photograph Albums and the Memory of Air Operations In Egypt, 1915— 18 Paper read at the University of Greenwich Memory Symposium, 6 June 2015 Military aviation played a role in the war in the Middle East from the outset. From January 1915 until the Armistice of Mudros on 30 October 1918, the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) and Royal Flying Corps (RFC) flew from sites along the line of the Suez Canal over the eastern Mediterranean and Ottoman controlled Sinai Peninsula, and Egypt’s Western Desert. Moreover, the Egyptian climate made it an ideal place to train pilots and observers for service on every front. This paper examines how flying officers who had served in Egypt during the Great War made use of airborne photography in their photograph albums to structure their memory of the experience. The albums compiled by flying officers, now in the archive of the RAF Museum, offer a seemingly haphazard concentration of images. Typical military subject matter comprises: infrastructure, especially aerodromes, shipping and logistic installations; operational activity, including bombing and reconnaissance; Ottoman, German and Arab enemies; and off-duty activities such as sporting events. Many albums also include touristic material, including views of archaeological sites, native types, and the ‘Arab Quarter’. Whatever their subject, the photographic prints pasted into these albums are here figured as displaced samples whose contingent origin was fundamental to their appeal to the veteran owner; every 1 Paul Fox included object functioned metonymically for what Susan Stewart describes as ‘the now-distanced experience’.1 The paper advances the view that these photograph albums originally served as condensers, crystallising personal memories of wartime experience in Egypt through a process whereby their makers ordered the material at their disposal in order to give shape to memories and thereby construct a ‘privatized sense of the past’.2 F. -

The cover, by Art Editor/lllustrator Bill DePaola, depicts an American eagle warily observing this triangle in a graphic elaboration of an abstract theme. For the first time in the experience of this editor, the Awards Committee members were unanimous in their first place votes for Major Don Alberts's "A Call from the Wilderness'' in the November-December 1976 issue. Aspiring authors who want to gain insight into subject matter that receives a very receptive reading by our editorial panei may want to re-examine that article. To the 50 percent of Air Force officers who necessarily receive an efficiency rating of three or below, it may be of more than passing interest to learn that the pseudonymous author of "I Am a Three" was recently promoted. You won't find Major Mark Wynn's name on the lieutenant colonel's promotion list, but we have it on good authority that the author who appeared under that nom de plume in the September-October 1976 issue is a living example that "threes" are promotable. Congratulations would seem to be appropriate, but how does one congratulate the anonymous? In this issue we find ourselves in the slightly embarrassed position of publishing an article by a member of the Air University Review Awards Committee. -

Lale When the British Empire withdrew from its Hong Kong crown colony, it was left principally with Gibraltar and Bermuda and what onc publication described as "an island group that is home primarily to seals and penguins, an additional two uninhabited except for scientists and an American naval base and one occupied principally by an active volcano.I" Not quite. Not included in this assessment of the Falkland Islands, the Caymans, the British Antarctic Territory, and the Caribbean island of Monserrat (wracked by volcanic eruptions late in the twentieth century), is a plot measuring twenty by thirty-four feet in Fort Worth's Greenwood Cemetery. Known officially as the Royal Flying Corps Cemetery, it is one of only three pieces of property in the United States owned by the British government.
