(53 >=:< ;: 9587/! 65*43 ,$210/! .'-,+ The Holy Apostle James, the son of Zebedee, was the brother of Saint John the Theologian, and one of the Twelve Apostles. He and his brother, Saint John, were called to be Apostles by our Lord Jesus Christ, Who called them the “Sons of Thunder” (Mark 3:17). It was this James, with John and Peter, who witnessed the Raising of the Daughter of Jairus, the Lord’s Transfiguration on Mount Tabor, and His agony in the Garden of Gethsemane.Saint James, after the Descent of the Holy Spirit, preached in Spain and in other lands, and then he returned to Jerusalem. He openly and boldly preached Jesus Christ as the Savior of the world, and he denounced the Pharisees and the Scribes with the words of Holy Scripture, reproaching them for their malice of heart and unbelief. The Jews could not prevail against Saint James, and so they hired the sorcerer Hermogenes to dispute with the apostle and refute his argumentsthat Christ was the promised Messiah Who had come into the world. The sorcerer sent to the apostle his pupil Philip, who was converted to belief in Christ. Then Hermogenes himself became persuaded of the power of God, he burned his books of magic, accepted holy Baptism and became a true follower of Christ. The Jews persuaded Herod Agrippa (40-44) to arrest the Apostle James and sentence him to death (Acts 12:1-2). Eusebius provides some of the details of the saint’s execution (CHURCH HISTORY II, 9). Saint James calmly heard the death sentence and continued to bear witness to Christ. One of the false witnesses, whose name was Josiah, was struck by the courage of Saint James. He came to believe in Jesus Christ as the Messiah. When they led the apostle forth to execution, Josiah fell at his feet, repenting of his sin and asking forgiveness. The apostle embraced him, gave him a kiss and said, “Peace and forgiveness to you.” Then Josiah confessed his faith in Christ before everyone, and he was beheaded with Saint James in the year 44 at Jerusalem. Saint James was the first of the Apostles to die as a martyr. Kelly H. Clark, Ninth Rector of St. Paul’s School The Chapel of St. Peter and St. Paul became the focal point of the campus upon its construction and consecration in 1888. Today the Chapel Tower pales only in comparison to the School’s power plant; its hourly bells can be heard from all over the campus. Both figuratively and literally, the building cannot be overlooked in the discussion of School history. And as St. Paul’s prepares to celebrate its 150th anniversary during the 2005-2006 academic year, the Chapel of St. Peter and St. Paul remains of utmost importance in the minds of alumni, faculty, and students alike. Each year the Rector receives new students to the School by welcoming into their Chapel seats; departing seniors use their last day in Chapel to sit in the very seats they occupied as new students. Indeed, the Chapel has a sort of aura about it—of both personal and School history—that makes it meaningful and unforgettable in the minds of those who live here. While taking photographs of the Chapel one Thursday during Spring Term, I met a man from Boston who commuted daily through the area and had decided that afternoon to tour the Big Chapel. He came up to me, his eyes wide with the experience of taking in the building for the first time.

    MARTA AMEIJEIRAS BARROS Mapping the cult of St James the Great in England… Mapping the cult of St James the Great in England during the Middle Ages: from the second half of the 11th century until the middle of the 14th century1 Marta Ameijeiras Barros The University of Edinburgh Trazando el culto de Santiago el Mayor en Inglaterra durante la Edad Media: desde mediados del siglo XI hasta mediados del siglo XIV Resumen: Este estudio es el resultado de la investigación del impacto que el culto a Santiago el Mayor y la peregrinación a Compostela tuvieron en el paisaje arquitectónico de Inglaterra durante la Edad Media y la relación de las dedicaciones jacobeas inglesas con las vías de comunicación existentes en aquel momento. La cronología en la que se enmarca este trabajo, de la segunda mitad del siglo XI a me- diados del siglo XIV, no significa una acotación exacta, ya que se han tenido en cuenta las fundaciones jacobeas del período anterior, y las fechas de muchos de los edificios estudiados resultan confusas. Los principales objetivos de esta investigación son demostrar de una manera visual la existencia de una devoción compostelana consolidada ya desde época temprana y, además, servir como herramienta que ayude a visualizar los posibles itinerarios de los peregrinos jacobeos a través de la Inglaterra medieval.
