Some of you had opportunities to experience firsthand the presence of the Pope- some had “connections” that helped them secure tickets to Central Park or Madison Square Garden, some of you went to the Mass in Philadelphia, and even Sebastian Valencia (our parish seminarian) had the privilege of being within a few feet of the Pope as he walked down the middle aisle of the Basilica of the Immaculate Con- ception in Washington, D.C. All those I’ve spoken to who were present at one or another papal event had the same reaction: they waited on long lines, stood for many hours, only caught a passing glimpse of the Pope, but it was well worth it! The presence of the Holy Spirit among the people who gathered at these events was truly powerful even before the Pope arrived. This is the beauty of our faith and our common discipleship. The Pope is the sign of our visible unity as Catholics, and the days of his visit were a time when we once again felt the won- der and beauty of what it means to be a Roman Catholic in our world today. And the nation took notice! Even for those of us who only saw the Pope on television, the graces were superabundant. Those who celebrat- ed the papal visit here at St. James can attest to the spirit of joy and celebration that permeated our parish life during the weekend of his visit to Philadelphia. I wanted to say a special word of thanks to all those who partici- pated and especially those who helped to plan all of the wonderful events that took place at our Parish Family Weekend in Solidarity with Pope Francis. I would like to thank Henry Marcantonio, Ed Wade, John McDevitt and Joe Cariello from our parish choir along with Andrew Filippone and the Stardust Big Band for the concert under the stars we experienced on Saturday night. It was a beautiful evening! The music, the danc- ing, and the delicious delicacies many of you brought to share made it a special experience. I would also like to thank the twenty families who slept out overnight in cardboard boxes in the parking lot behind the school as they created a “Box Village.” Simulating the experience of many homeless families who spend nights on the street, under bridges, in cars and boxes for shelter, was a truly powerful experience for those who took part. Best of all, the families that participated raised over $3000 for Family Promise, the organization in Union County we partner with to help the homeless. I also want to thank all those who came to share in our Pot Luck Lunch on Sunday afternoon: those who brought food, Jared Veloso (one of the high school youth of our parish) who do- nated his time as our DJ, and those who provided the Bouncy House and face painting for the children who came. Also, we are grateful to those who helped put together backpacks of school supplies for children in need. And for those who came to view the Papal Mass from the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia, I hope they enjoyed the big screen viewing of this inspiring celebration as much as I did. All told, it was a weekend that will always remain in my memory. A special word of gratitude goes to our Parish Council who planned and coordinated the entire weekend. We are most grateful for all those whose gifts and generosity make St. James the great place it continues to be. May we continue to pray for Pope Francis and the bishops of the Church who are currently meeting in Rome for the World Synod on the Family. And may we continue to reflect on the graces of our own visit with the Pope, his insights and prayers, as we give thanks that we are part of those amazing Catholic families here in Springfield and throughout the World.
