LETTER FROM THE PASTOR

Dear Parish Family,

Now that the whirlwind visit of Francis to the United States is over, we can begin to look back and un- pack the importance of his message, the response of our culture, and the graces we have all received during those wonderful days of grace. Some of you had opportunities to experience firsthand the presence of the Pope- some had “connections” that helped them secure tickets to Central Park or Madison Square Garden, some of you went to the Mass in Philadelphia, and even Sebastian Valencia (our parish seminarian) had the privilege of being within a few feet of the Pope as he walked down the middle aisle of the Basilica of the Immaculate Con- ception in Washington, D.C. All those I’ve spoken to who were present at one or another papal event had the same reaction: they waited on long lines, stood for many hours, only caught a passing glimpse of the Pope, but it was well worth it! The presence of the Holy Spirit among the people who gathered at these events was truly powerful even before the Pope arrived. This is the beauty of our faith and our common discipleship. The Pope is the sign of our visible unity as Catholics, and the days of his visit were a time when we once again felt the won- der and beauty of what it means to be a Roman Catholic in our world today. And the nation took notice! Even for those of us who only saw the Pope on television, the graces were superabundant. Those who celebrat- ed the papal visit here at St. James can attest to the spirit of joy and celebration that permeated our parish life during the weekend of his visit to Philadelphia. I wanted to say a special word of thanks to all those who partici- pated and especially those who helped to plan all of the wonderful events that took place at our Parish Family Weekend in Solidarity with . I would like to thank Henry Marcantonio, Ed Wade, John McDevitt and Joe Cariello from our parish choir along with Andrew Filippone and the Stardust Big Band for the concert under the stars we experienced on Saturday night. It was a beautiful evening! The music, the danc- ing, and the delicious delicacies many of you brought to share made it a special experience. I would also like to thank the twenty families who slept out overnight in cardboard boxes in the parking lot behind the school as they created a “Box Village.” Simulating the experience of many homeless families who spend nights on the street, under bridges, in cars and boxes for shelter, was a truly powerful experience for those who took part. Best of all, the families that participated raised over $3000 for Family Promise, the organization in Union County we partner with to help the homeless. I also want to thank all those who came to share in our Pot Luck Lunch on Sunday afternoon: those who brought food, Jared Veloso (one of the high school youth of our parish) who do- nated his time as our DJ, and those who provided the Bouncy House and face painting for the children who came. Also, we are grateful to those who helped put together backpacks of school supplies for children in need. And for those who came to view the Papal Mass from the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia, I hope they enjoyed the big screen viewing of this inspiring celebration as much as I did. All told, it was a weekend that will always remain in my memory. A special word of gratitude goes to our Parish Council who planned and coordinated the entire weekend. We are most grateful for all those whose gifts and generosity make St. James the great place it continues to be. May we continue to pray for Pope Francis and the of the Church who are currently meeting in Rome for the World Synod on the Family. And may we continue to reflect on the graces of our own visit with the Pope, his insights and prayers, as we give thanks that we are part of those amazing Catholic families here in Springfield and throughout the World.

In His Spirit, ~ Fr. John

VENERATE THE MARTIN FAMILY RELIQUARY, WHICH CONTAINS RELICS OF ST. THERESE OF LISIEUX AND OF HER PARENTS, BLESSED LOUIS AND ZELIE MARTIN Louis and Zélie Martin will formally join their daughter, St. Thérèse of Lisieux, in the communion of on Oct. 18 at the Vatican. Their relics will be here at St James Church at the time of the . Louis and Zélie Martin were beatified on October 19, 2008, not because they gave five religious to the Church, one of whom is a saint, but because their married life gave witness of an exemplary Christian life. That life was completely ordinary, that of a Christian couple who raised their children by working together. They knew the joy and pain of all families, but in their to- getherness all was love: the love of God; love of their children; love of others. Saint Thérèse wrote to abbé Bellière: “The good Lord gave me a father and a mother more worthy of heaven than of earth." And in a letter to Father Roulland she speaks of the "heaven towards which tended all their actions and all their desires." Their life is like a catechism on family life. Louis Martin was a watchmaker who eventually closed his own shop to help Zélie manage her prosperous lace-making business. Maria survived a difficult pregnancy, refusing to abort even when the doctor swore that both she and the child would die if she went to term. Zélie buried four children in five years and then endured a prolonged battle with breast cancer, to which she finally succumbed at age 46.
