J A M E S T H E G REAT – J U L Y 25TH, 20 2 1 The Liturgy of the Word Celebrant Blessèd be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. All And blessèd be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. The Celebrant welcomes everyone and introduces the service. Celebrant The Lord be with you. All And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. The Celebrant prays the Collect – a prayer reflecting the theme of the day. O gracious God, we remember before you today your servant and apostle James, first among the Twelve to suffer martyrdom for the Name of Jesus Christ; and we pray that you will pour out upon the leaders of your Church that spirit of self-denying service by which alone they may have true authority among your people; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Please remain seated for a reading from the New Testament. Lector A reading from The Acts of the Apostles. At that time prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. One of them named Agabus stood up and predicted by the Spirit that there would be a severe famine over all the world; and this took place during the reign of Claudius. The disciples determined that according to their ability, each would send relief to the believers living in Judea; this they did, sending it to the elders by Barnabas and Saul. About that time King Herod laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the church. He had James, the brother of John, killed with the sword. After he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. (This was during the festival of Unleavened Bread.) Acts 11:27-12:3 Lector Hear what God’s Spirit is saying to His Church. All Thanks be to God. 3 T H E F E A S T O F S T . J A M E S T H E G REAT – J U L Y 25TH, 20 2 1 Please stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel. Celebrant The Lord be with you. All And also with you. Celebrant The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Mark. All Glory to you, Lord Christ. The mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with her sons, and kneeling before him, she asked a favor of him. And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Declare that these two sons of mine will sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.” But Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.” He said to them, “You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left, this is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.” When the ten heard it, they were angry with the two brothers. But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave; just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.” Mark 6:30-34, 53-56 Celebrant The Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, Lord Christ. Please sit for the sermon. The Prayers of the People and The Confession Please remain seated – or kneel if you prefer – for a short time of prayer for the world, the church, and those things that are on our hearts at this time. Leader Inspired by the Holy Spirit, let us pray to the Father through the Son, knowing that God hears our prayers, and knows our needs even when we can’t put them into words. 4 T H E F E A S T O F S T . J A M E S T H E G REAT – J U L Y 25TH, 20 2 1 We pause for an extended time of quiet as you pray this prayer. All Lord, wherever we are, you already are there, with us. Leader Lord God, we bring to you all the joy that our beautiful world brings us, as we enjoy the beach, hiking, gardening and other outdoor pursuits. We give thanks for the many ecosystems that fit together to make this beauty possible. Help us to do everything we can to protect our precious earth, and to share its resources with our neighbors. We pause for an extended time of quiet as you pray this prayer. All Lord, help us live simply so others may simply live. Leader Heavenly Father, we lift to you those who are unemployed, homeless, living in poverty or disease, or incarcerated. Help us recognize that oftentimes people find themselves in those circumstances despite their very best efforts. Make us compassionate to them, not judgmental. And even when people have brought themselves troubles through their own wrongdoing, help us to remember that society’s aim should always be forgiveness and rehabilita- tion – reflecting that God always gives us another chance. We pause for an extended time of quiet as you pray this prayer. All Lord of endless second chances, help us to forgive others just as you forgive us. Leader United as the Body of Christ, we pray for those from our own parish family that have asked for our prayers: Jennifer Wiggins, Rima Simon, Sue Miller, Todd Cobey, Bill Skaggs, Kenneth Grindley, Jeff Reilly, Piper Beatty, JD Head, John Mathew, Bobbie Gray, John Powers, and any others we now name out loud or silently… We pause for any other names. 5 T H E F E A S T O F S T . J A M E S T H E G REAT – J U L Y 25TH, 20 2 1 All Lord, bring them light, comfort, and your healing love. Leader We pray for all the departed. We pray for those recently departed, among them Meredith Hamilton & Virginia Haddow; for those whose anniversary of passing occurs at this time; and for any others known to us. We pause for any other names. Leader As we bring all our prayers together, we give thanks for our health, healing and, above all, hope – the hope that only you can give us through the promise of life in all its fullness – today, tomorrow and for eternity. We pause for an extended time of quiet as you pray this prayer. All Lord, thank you that you hear all our prayers. Celebrant Let us now call to mind and confess our sins against God and against our neighbor. After a long silence, the Celebrant begins the following prayer. All God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen. Celebrant Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. 6 T H E F E A S T O F S T . J A M E S T H E G REAT – J U L Y 25TH, 20 2 1 The Peace and Offertory Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. All And also with you. You are invited to share a sign of peace with those around you. After this, please sit for announcements and for the choir anthem: “O Taste And See” – Ralph Vaughan-Williams (1872 – 1958) The Great Thanksgiving Celebrant The Lord be with you. All And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to give him thanks and praise. Then the Celebrant continues. It is indeed right to thank to you at all times, Father, Creator of heaven and earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Jesus & His Team - Matthew 4: 18 - 22 (Read) Jesus is starting his ministry. 1. Why can’t he just go it alone?_____________________________________________________ 2. What is the benefit of a team?_____________________________________________________ Jesus did not choose royalty or politicians. He chose fishermen. Laborers. Ordinary People. Those you least expect (tax collector). What does that tell us about God? God speaks to everyone and everyone is equal in the eyes of God. Everyone is called to be a minister of God’s love God continually calls us to stop what we are doing and create a new life following God Peter: He was a fisherman from Capernaum. He's also often called Simon, Simon Peter, or Cephas. (Cephas comes from the Aramaic for "rock," and Peter comes from the Greek equivalent for the same.) Andrew: He was Peter's brother and fishing partner; John's gospel says that Andrew was first a disciple of John the Baptist. James: He was son of Zebedee and a fisherman from Capernaum. He's called "James the Great" in later tradition. John: He was James's brother and partner in the family fishing business. And maybe because they're so brazen, in Mark, Jesus gives the two brothers the name Boanerges, which is a Greek form of the Aramaic "sons of thunder" (Mark 10:35–45).

  • The Stained-Glass Stories of the Chapel of St. Peter and St. Paul an Independent Study Project by Aidan Tait ’04
A Hundred-Year Narrative: The Stained-Glass Stories of the Chapel of St. Peter and St. Paul an Independent Study Project by Aidan Tait ’04 We are so fortunate to visit daily a place as sacred as this. -Rev. Kelly H. Clark, Ninth Rector of St. Paul’s School The Chapel of St. Peter and St. Paul became the focal point of the campus upon its construction and consecration in 1888. Today the Chapel Tower pales only in comparison to the School’s power plant; its hourly bells can be heard from all over the campus. Both figuratively and literally, the building cannot be overlooked in the discussion of School history. And as St. Paul’s prepares to celebrate its 150th anniversary during the 2005-2006 academic year, the Chapel of St. Peter and St. Paul remains of utmost importance in the minds of alumni, faculty, and students alike. Each year the Rector receives new students to the School by welcoming into their Chapel seats; departing seniors use their last day in Chapel to sit in the very seats they occupied as new students. Indeed, the Chapel has a sort of aura about it—of both personal and School history—that makes it meaningful and unforgettable in the minds of those who live here. While taking photographs of the Chapel one Thursday during Spring Term, I met a man from Boston who commuted daily through the area and had decided that afternoon to tour the Big Chapel. He came up to me, his eyes wide with the experience of taking in the building for the first time.

  • The First Apology of St. Justin, Martyr (C. AD 150) NT New Testament HTKNT Herders Theologischer Kommentar Zum Neuen Testament
The First Apology of St. Justin, Martyr (c. AD 150) And on the day called Sunday, all who live in cities or in the country gather together to one place, and the memoirs of the apostles or the writings of the prophets are read, as long as time permits; then, when the reader has ceased, the president verbally instructs, and exhorts to the imitation of these good things. Then we all rise together and pray. At the end of our prayers, we salute one another with a kiss. Then bread and wine and water are brought, and the president in like manner offers prayers and thanksgivings, according to his ability, and the people assent, saying Amen; and there is a distribution to each, and a participation of that over which thanks have been given, and to those who are absent a portion is sent by the deacons. And they who are well to do, and willing, give what each thinks fit; and what is collected is deposited with the president, who assists the orphans and widows, and those who, through sickness or any other cause are in want. JAMES, BROTHER OF JESUS. One of the various Christians named James in the NT is the James who is identified as “the Lord’s brother” (Gal 1:19), a “pillar” of the Jerusalem Church (Gal 2:9), a participant in the conference(s) at Jerusalem (Gal 2:1–10; Acts 15:1–20), and as one who experienced the risen Lord (1 Cor 15:7). It is generally agreed that this person, mentioned by Paul in 1 Cor 15:7; Gal 1:19; 2:9, 12 is the same man referred to by Acts 12:17; 15:13; 21:18.
