At that time prophets came down from to Antioch. One of them named stood up and predicted by the Spirit that there would be a severe famine over all the world; and this took place during the reign of Claudius. The disciples determined that according to their ability, each would send relief to the believers living in ; this they did, sending it to the elders by and Saul.

About that time King Herod laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the church. He had James, the of John, killed with the sword. After he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. (This was during the of Unleavened Bread.) Acts 11:27-12:3

Celebrant The Lord be with you. All And also with you. Celebrant The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Mark. All Glory to you, Lord Christ.

The mother of the sons of came to Jesus with her sons, and kneeling before him, she asked a favor of him. And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Declare that these two sons of mine will sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.” But Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.” He said to them, “You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left, this is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”

When the ten heard it, they were angry with the two . But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave; just as the came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

Mark 6:30-34, 53-56 Celebrant The Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Please sit for the sermon.

The Prayers of the People and The Confession

Please remain seated – or kneel if you prefer – for a short time of prayer for the world, the church, and those things that are on our hearts at this time.

T H E F E A S T O F S T . J A M E S T H E G REAT – J U L Y 25TH, 20 2 1

We pause for an extended time of quiet as you pray this prayer.

All Lord, wherever we are, you already are there, with us.

Leader Lord God, we bring to you all the joy that our beautiful world brings us, as we enjoy the beach, , gardening and other outdoor pursuits. We give thanks for the many ecosystems that fit together to make this beauty possible.

Help us to do everything we can to protect our precious earth, and to share its resources with our neighbors.

We pause for an extended time of quiet as you pray this prayer.

All Lord, help us live simply so others may simply live.

Leader Heavenly Father, we lift to you those who are unemployed, homeless, living in poverty or disease, or incarcerated. Help us recognize that oftentimes people find themselves in those circumstances despite their very best efforts. Make us compassionate to them, not judgmental.

And even when people have brought themselves troubles through their own wrongdoing, help us to remember that society’s aim should always be forgiveness and rehabilita- tion – reflecting that God always gives us another chance.

We pause for an extended time of quiet as you pray this prayer.

All Lord of endless second chances, help us to forgive others just as you forgive us.

Leader United as the Body of Christ, we pray for those from our own parish family that have asked for our prayers:

Jennifer Wiggins, Rima Simon, Sue Miller, Todd Cobey, Bill Skaggs, Kenneth Grindley, Jeff Reilly, Piper Beatty, JD Head, John Mathew, Bobbie Gray, John Powers,

and any others we now name out loud or silently…

We pause for any other names.

T H E F E A S T O F S T . J A M E S T H E G REAT – J U L Y 25TH, 20 2 1

All Lord, bring them light, comfort, and your healing love.

Leader We pray for all the departed. We pray for those recently departed, among them Meredith Hamilton & Virginia Haddow; for those whose anniversary of passing occurs at this time; and for any others known to us.

We pause for any other names.

Leader As we bring all our prayers together, we give thanks for our health, healing and, above all, hope – the hope that only you can give us through the promise of life in all its fullness – today, tomorrow and for eternity.

We pause for an extended time of quiet as you pray this prayer.

All Lord, thank you that you hear all our prayers.

Celebrant Let us now call to mind and confess our sins against God and against our neighbor.

After a long silence, the Celebrant begins the following prayer.

All God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen.

Celebrant Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you  all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

And so, Father, we bring you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said,

“Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said,

“Drink this, all of you; This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Father, we now celebrate the memorial of your Son. By means of this holy bread and cup, we show forth the sacrifice of his death, and proclaim his
