The course also explores the differences between cultures as demonstrated in the way Hofstede's six cultural dimensions play out at home, in society, and in the workplace (for example, in the way employees view themselves in contrast to their employers, with a distinct distance of power and authority in Japan but a closer connection in the United States and Denmark). At the conclusion, we examine the Danish concepts of hygge (“cozy” or “coziness”) and hyggekrog (“cozy nook”) in contrast, for example, to the Irish craic (a more verbal cozy), and students work individually and in groups to create short, succinct but clear speeches designed to inform an American audience of these distinctively Danish terms. Finally, the course examines cognitive dissonance in American popular culture. In particular, students will examine tv commercials for American products, such as Lysol spray, from the 1950s to the 2010s to see how they create a conflict in the minds of consumers between well-established and new, conflicting ideas of American cleanliness. This conflict, known as cognitive dissonance, demands that viewers purchase the new products to resolve the conflict. This process may then be incorporated into the speaker's collection of persuasive methods, which vary according to culture. Cross Cultural Understanding Instructor: Kevin Clark Email: [email protected] Kevin Clark is a consultant and professor of Communication Studies at Austin Community College who helps students and professionals become more proficient and comfortable with communication on a daily basis. Before teaching and advising in communication, Kevin studied math and philosophy at North Carolina State University and the Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium and earned an MA in Linguistics from the University of Illinois and a PhD in Communication Studies, with a focus on Critical and Cultural Studies, from the University of Texas. He has worked as a translator, proofreader, editor, software trainer, and university course developer, and has taught at Rhode Island College, Oregon State University, and Texas State University. Kevin is fascinated by Modern and Midcentury design and typography, and enjoys traveling to islands around the world as he maps out a topology of tourism. He is currently working on a trade-press book on public speaking and manners that he hopes will bring back the word nice to its proper place as a means to living daily life. Public Communication and Presentation Preparation Instructor: Sara Shippey Email: [email protected] Description: This class will focus on competent communication, specifically within the public speaking context.
