Ruoff, Chair Laura Robson Jennifer Tappan Portland State University 2019 © 2019 Jeff Braytenbah Abstract Japan’s colonial activities on the island of Hokkaido were instrumental to the creation of modern Japanese national identity. Within this construction, the indigenous Ainu people came to be seen in dialectical opposition to the 'modern' and 'civilized' identity that Japanese colonial actors fashioned for themselves. This process was articulated through travel literature, ethnographic portraiture, and discourse in scientific racism which racialized perceived divisions between the Ainu and Japanese and contributed to the unmaking of the Ainu homeland: Ainu Mosir. -

It is offered to the 3-rd year students of School of Asian Studies, Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs in the 1st module. The course offers learners the chance to encounter and appreciate behavior, moral standards and some of the material conditions surrounding Japanese artists in the nineteenth century, in order to renew our assumptions about what artistic “realism” is and what it meant. Learners will walk away with a clear understanding of how society and the individual were conceived of and represented in early modern Japan. Unlike contemporary western art forms, which acknowledge their common debt as “sister arts” but remain divided by genre and discourse, Japanese visual and literary culture tended to combine, producing literary texts inspired by visual images, and visual images which would then be inscribed with poems and prose. -

Hommes, MA University of Pittsburgh, 2004 In the Bakumatsu period (1853-1868), Japan experienced many changes and challenges. One of these challenges was regarding how to learn from the West and how to use that knowledge in the building of Japan. One of the most important institutions for such Western learning was the Bansho Shirabesho, an institution created by the Tokugawa government in 1856 to translate Western materials, provide a school for Japanese scholars, and to censor the translations of Western works. This institution eventually gave language instruction in Dutch, English, French, German, and Russian and it also gave instruction in many other practical subjects such as military science and production. This thesis examines in detail how the Shirabesho was founded, what some of the initial difficulties were and how successful it was in accomplishing the tasks it was given. It also assesses the legacy of the Shirabesho in helping to bridge the transition between the Tokugawa period’s emphasis on feudal rank and the Meiji’s emphasis on merit. -

This event marks the start of the relationships between Japan and the Netherlands. The relations between the countries continued when Japan started its policy of isolation, and have lasted for 414 years until the present day. For over 200 years, the Dutch at the island of Dejima in Nagasaki, were the only gateway to the West. All knowledge from and about Europe was introduced to the country via the Dutch and hence became known as ‘Dutch Studies’ or ‘Rangaku’. President Toshio HIRANO’s 2014 Entrance Ceremony speech From “Tekijuku” to the “World Tekijuku” First of all, I would like to heartily welcome you to Osaka University. I also offer my sincere congratulations to your families and related parties. With a life full of promising prospects, today all of you are embarking on a new life as a member of Osaka University. For me, as President of Osaka University, this is a supremely happy moment. We, Osaka University, extend a hearty welcome to you. Tekijuku, the primary root of Osaka University Our school's roots go back to Tekijuku. Let me now talk a little about Osaka University where you will spend the coming years. Although officially the government set up this university, in actuality, local people arranged the funds and temporary operational expenses for its founding. Thus, in essence, Osaka University was founded thanks to persons involved in the university and to the enthusiastic support of Osaka citizens wishing for an imperial university. Osaka University’s roots reach back to Tekijuku, a private “place of learning” founded in 1838 by the doctor and scholar of Western sciences OGATA Koan. SHIBA Ryotaro, a graduate of Osaka School of Foreign Studies, the predecessor Osaka University of Foreign Studies, the predecessor of the current School of Foreign Studies, wrote at the beginning of his novel Kashin that Teijuku was the predecessor of Osaka University and, thus, in this sense, OGATA Koan was the founder of Osaka University. More than 1,000 students came to Tekijuku from all over Japan and studied day and night.
