Haas is a 20-year veteran of successful race team management -- a businessman who knows what it takes to "win" in a most demanding business specialty and who does it year after year . at a profit, A German by birth, Carl Haas was an auto enthusiast at an early age. He began racing himself, as an amateur, in 1953. His cars visited race circuits from Nassau to California, and he did well. In 1966 he hung up his goggles and turned full attention to the race car importing business he had founded two years earlier as a part-time enterprise that quickly became a full-time occupation.     LOLA AT 60 WE CELEBRATE ONE OF THE GREAT RACING CAR CONSTRUCTORS Including FROM BROADLEY TO BIRRANE GREATEST CARS LOLA’S SECRET WEAPON THE AUDI CHALLENGER The success of the Mk1 sports-racer, usually powered by the Coventry Climax 1100cc FWA engine, brought Lola Cars into existence. It overshadowed the similar e orts of Lotus boss Colin Chapman and remained competitive for several seasons. We believe it is one of designer Eric Broadleyʼs greatest cars, so turn to page 16 to see what our resident racer made of the original prototype at Donington Park. Although the coupe is arguably more iconic, the open version of the T70 was more successful. Developed in 1965, the Group 7 machine could take a number of di erent V8 engines and was ideal for the inaugural Can-Am contest in ʼ66. Champion John Surtees, Dan Gurney and Mark Donohue won races during the campaign, while Surtees was the only non-McLaren winner in ʼ67. The big Lola remains a force in historic racing.     Sanctioning Bodies Tyrants used to love American automobile racing and so did demagogues, idealists, fat cats, laissez-faire capitalists, doomsayers, and saviors. Making matters worse, back in the 20th century such dangerous creatures were famous for banding together for mass hallucinations and the free exchange of fancy. Terrible things happened to racing whenever they did. They had it pretty good, did those racers of the early 20th century, who were free to race as they wished, without sanctioning bodies ordering them around. But by the 1920s racing was in crisis. The contest board of the powerful American Automobile Association, most feared and probably worst of all sanctioning bodies, had steered racing to the brink of a precipice. Its over-developed Millers and Duesenbergs tended to run flawlessly or blow up from the stress, and, in either case, were traveling much too fast for sanity and safety on the bricked surface of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, to say nothing of the AAA’s tournament of even faster board tracks. Operating costs were out of control, and a clique egotistical fat cat racing car owners had matters firmly under their thumb. And although the stated purpose of the Indy 500 was to further development the automobile, the only piece of advanced technology to spew forth from the Hoosier laboratory of speed had been the rear-view mirror. The Great Depression of the 1930 ameliorated a lot of this, cutting the speeds and putting an end to the supercharged Millers and Duesenbergs, wiping out the fat cats, bankrupting all the looming lumber bowls, and almost doing the same thing to the Indy 500.

    The Way It Is/ Some fond memories of Carl Haas by Gordon Kirby July 11, 2016 Carl Haas has passed away after a long illness. Haas, 86, was one of America's most successful race team owners who enjoyed wide influence in his other roles as the country's most prolific race car salesman and chairman for many years of the SCCA's board of governors. He also promoted races at the Milwaukee Mile and sat on Road America's board of directors. Carl owned and operated Newman/Haas Racing from 1983-2011 in partnership with Paul Newman who lost his battle with cancer in 2008. Haas ran the team out of his base in Lincolnshire, Illinois and Newman/Haas is ranked second only to Team Penske on IndyCar's all- time winners list with a record of 107 wins, 109 pole positions and eight championships. Haas's statistics are even more impressive when you add his team's 39 Can-Am and Formula 5000 wins and seven championships from the nineteen-seventies and early eighties. Haas caught the racing bug in 1951 when a friend took him to a road race through the surrounding roads and streets of Elkhart Lake. The race was a forerunner to the creation a few years later of the great Road America road course but that summer day in 1951 caught young Carl's imagination and he was soon racing an MGTD in SCCA club races. © Racemaker/David Hutson "A friend of mine took me to a race at Elkhart Lake," Carl recalled a few years ago.
