Shenstone Village Festival This year’s festival was a huge success on many levels. The weather was perfect (perhaps too perfect on Saturday - phew!). The Open Gardens were lovely, as were the church flower displays. We had over 1000 happy visitors, who were spoilt for choice on events to take part in and displays to see. Plus of course an excellent choice of food and drinks to enjoy. Our many event organisers used the weekend to raise money for their own organisation -The Guides; The Brownies; Rainbows; Shenstone Cares; The W.I. and The FROGS all had a successful day’s fundraising. Then there was the Cooper Room and the Library who also benefitted from festival visitors. Other groups gave money to their favoured charity. These included Cancer Support, Cafod, Mind, Air Ambulance, St Giles Hospice, Lichfield Pathway Project and Dementia Care. Net income from the sale of programmes was just over £4000 which was an all time record for the festival. This money will be made available to Shenstone-based community organisations by way of small, one-off grants. Please mail Keith Jones on solvac@btinternet for an application form.

Our Unsung Heroes There are many who give up their time and effort in so many different ways to help in the Community. Without the effort of these hugely important volunteers our villages would be a little less pleasant to live in. One of these volunteers is Mr John Lakin (pictured) of Glenwood Rise, Stonnall. For over 13 years, Mr Lakin has looked after the piece of land on the corner of Main Street and Glenwood Rise. He cut the grass, trimmed the edges and removed twigs and debris from under the trees. Sadly, he has had to give up very recently following a health scare but the Council, and the residents of Stonnall, are really grateful for his sterling work. Thank you to Mr Lakin and all other volunteers in the Parish. 3 parish summer 19.qxp_Layout 1 12/08/2019 09:16 Page 4

Friends of LittleAstonbury – Shenstone Tower Party in the Park 2019

July 13th saw the 8th Party in the Park at Little Aston Recreation Ground, the event has become one of the most popular local family events of the year with a fun-filled evening of music from local bands Monkey Business and Rattlesnake Jake plus two headline bands Ultimate Elton and George Michael Beyond Faith tribute acts. A dedicated committee of volunteers spend 10 months planning the event which is organised to benefit the community. All of the Party in the Park profits are for the benefit of LARGA, the charity responsible for the upkeep of Little Aston Recreation Ground. The park continues to look fabulous and is a credit to everyone involved. The event could not be possible without all the volunteers, helpers and local businesses who come out in force to support the sell-out event. This year the evening was once again blessed with blue skies and sunshine until sunset when the proms finale sung by Lydia Borg and fireworks display completed the evening. JUNIOR CADETS During the summer term, all of the year 6 pupils at St. Peter’s and Little Aston Primary School, a total of 63 pupils, have completed the Junior Cadets programme. As the Greysbrooke Primary School and Shenstone Lodge pupils embarked on the course in the autumn term, it means that all of the year 6 pupils in all our primary schools have had this wonderful opportunity to engage in a meaningful way with the Police and grow in their knowledge and understanding of their role in the community and their understanding of good citizenship. Throughout the course, there is a constant emphasis on the importance of respecting themselves, their neighbours, their community and the environment. It has been a real joy working with our young people; they are so full of life, energy and have immense potential.

NEW BIKE FOR OUR PCSO From PCSO’s Andrea Horsnall & Steve Smith: Awesome! We have had the electric bike donated to the local PCSOs by Heather Dyson - Jones of Creative Plants Ltd, Birmingham Road, Shenstone and supported by Dave Green at Cycling 2000, Wheel Lane, Lichfield for a week now and have already clocked up 137 miles on bike patrol in the community. It is brilliant as it gives us close contact with members of the community, yet allows us to get from place to place so much quicker and arrive not so much out of breath! It is already making a huge difference to our work and effectiveness and our health in this hot weather. We are so grateful for this generous gift given to benefit the community. Thank you so much. 5 parish summer 19.qxp_Layout 1 12/08/2019 09:16 Page 6
