Endelman, Co-Chair Professor John V. Fine, Jr., Co-Chair Professor Zvi Y. Gitelman Professor Geoffrey H. Eley Associate Professor Brian A. Porter-Szűcs © Emil Kerenji 2008 Acknowledgments I would like to thank all those who supported me in a number of different and creative ways in the long and uncertain process of researching and writing a doctoral dissertation. First of all, I would like to thank John Fine and Todd Endelman, because of whom I came to Michigan in the first place. I thank them for their guidance and friendship. Geoff Eley, Zvi Gitelman, and Brian Porter have challenged me, each in their own ways, to push my thinking in different directions. My intellectual and academic development is equally indebted to my fellow Ph.D. students and friends I made during my life in Ann Arbor. Edin Hajdarpašić, Bhavani Raman, Olivera Jokić, Chandra Bhimull, Tijana Krstić, Natalie Rothman, Lenny Ureña, Marie Cruz, Juan Hernandez, Nita Luci, Ema Grama, Lisa Nichols, Ania Cichopek, Mary O’Reilly, Yasmeen Hanoosh, Frank Cody, Ed Murphy, Anna Mirkova are among them, not in any particular order. Doing research in the Balkans is sometimes a challenge, and many people helped me navigate the process creatively. At the Jewish Historical Museum in Belgrade, I would like to thank Milica Mihailović, Vojislava Radovanović, and Branka Džidić.

  • Late Antique and Early Byzantine Fortifications in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Hinterland of the Province of Dalmatia)
Höhensiedlungen zwischen Antike und Mittelalter – RGA-E Band 58 – Seiten 559–594 © CopyrightLate 2008Antique Walter and de Early Gruyter Byzantine · Berlin fortifications · New York in Bosnia and Herzegovina 559 Late Antique and Early Byzantine fortifications in Bosnia and Herzegovina (hinterland of the province of Dalmatia) Perica Sˇpehar The Western Balkans came under Roman rule during the reign of Augustus, when the region of Dalmatia was established, stretching from the Arsia (Rasˇa) river in Istria in the north to the town of Lissus (Ljesˇ) in the south, and including Kvarner (the bay of Rijeka). In the north, the province of Dalmatia bordered the province of Pannonia Superior along a line lying slightly to the south of the course of the river Sava. In the east it bordered the province of Moesia Superior along a line that goes from the confluence of the Kolubara river through Cˇ acˇak and Mt. Sˇara to the Lissus. The borders established during the 1st century did not change significantly, apart from the separation of a part of the territory around the bay of Kotor and Skadar at the end of the 3rd or beginning of the 4th century to form the province of Prevalis, while in the east the province of Dalmatia bor- dered the province of Moesia I, most probably along the course of the river Drina.1 Geographically, the province of Dalmatia can be divided into two zones: the coastal and the mountainous regions. The karst coastland is dis- tinguished by its indented coastline and many islands and bays, but with a small number of fertile fields suitable for agricultural activity.

  • Ottoman-Habsburg Forced Migration and the Near Eastern Crisis
Empire Displaced: Ottoman-Habsburg Forced Migration and the Near Eastern Crisis, 1875-1878 Jared Manasek Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 ©2013 Jared Manasek All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT Empire Displaced: Ottoman-Habsburg Forced Migration and the Near Eastern Crisis, 1875-1878 Jared Manasek This dissertation examines the case of 250-300,000 largely Orthodox Christian refugees who fled Ottoman Bosnia and Hercegovina for the Habsburg Empire during the uprisings of 1875-1878. The violence during this period started out as a peasant uprising, but over the course of three years cascaded into revolts and violence across the Ottoman Balkans and led to a major European diplomatic crisis. The Treaty of Berlin of 1878, which ended the violence, reconfigured the political geography of the Balkans, making the former Ottoman provinces of Montenegro, Romania, and Serbia independent; giving a sweeping autonomy to Bulgaria, and handing over to Austria-Hungary the administration of a nominally Ottoman Bosnia and Hercegovina. Refugees played an under-appreciated role in the international and domestic politics of the period, and this dissertation argues that forced migration was in fact one of the key considerations of Great Power diplomacy. Forced migration offered a means to measure degree of violence, and control over population movement offered a way for empires to lay claims to legitimacy. In a similar manner, philanthropists and international humanitarians used forced migration to build and advocate for their own civic spheres. The dissertation argues that during this period, the modern category of “refugee” was defined as states developed processes to manage refugees domestically and to create international policies for refugee aid and return.

Cross-Cultural Exchange in the Post-Medieval Adriatic: An examination of glass artefacts from the 15th through mid-18th centuries By: Samantha Garwood A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Sheffield Faculty of Arts and Humanities Department of Archaeology September 2017 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This thesis would not have been possible without the support, guidance, and access to materials provided by friends, family, and colleagues throughout the last four years. Thanks must first be given to my supervisor, Hugh Willmott, for allowing me this amazing research opportunity, and for putting up with my general lack of knowledge. Thanks must also be given to Phil McCluskey, who very kindly continued to support my research even after his time at Sheffield came to an end. Thanks also to the University of Sheffield Faculty of Arts and Humanities for the scholarship which made this possible. Thank you to the many museums who granted me access to their collections: Muzej grada Trogira, especially Lujana Paraman; the Arheološka zbirka Osor – Lošinjski muzej, particularly Jasminka Ćus-Rukonić; Marina Lambasa, Emil Podrug, and the Muzej grada Šibenika; Radmila Biondić and Marina Kovač at the Muzej Slavonije; Igor Mihajlović at the Hrvatski restauratorski zavod; Dr Vesna Bikić at the Institute of Archaeology in Belgrade; and Ðivo Bašić at Pomorski Muzej, Dubrovački Muzeji. Thank you also to Ilir Parangoni for showing me some of the glass finds from Butrint, and to Nikolina Topić, Margherita Ferri, and Luka Bekić for sharing their research with me. Finally, thank you to my family and friends for supporting me through all of this.
