Bosnia and Herzegovina lies in the heart of southeast Europe. It is here that eastern and western civilizations met, sometimes clashed, but more often enriched and reinforced each other throughout its long and fasci- nating history. Perhaps what is most important for the visitor to know today, though, is that Bosnia and Her- zegovina is a stunningly beautiful country with a vast array of landscapes, cultures, traditions and people.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a long name for a coun- try that measures just over 50,000 km2. Bosnia is the northern region of Bosnia and Herzegovina, encom- passing roughly 80% of the country; the other epony- mous region, the southern part, is Herzegovina. Bos- nia is an informal term for the whole country.

Bosnia has five main cities (Sarajevo, Banja , Tu- zla, Mostar and ) and numerous smaller towns. In the course of recent decades the population un- derwent a decisive shift towards industrialization and urbanization, producing in the main cities a vibrant, sophisticated, and highly educated population. Some of the most successful firms in the former were located in Bosnia-Herzegovina, while the Winter Olympics, held in Sarajevo in 1984, lifted Bosnia and

DESTINATION its capital to a special status.

6 In the countryside, a more traditional rural lifestyle continues to exist. Bosnia is a country of exceptional natural beauty, with dramatic mountains and turquoise rivers, and striking contrasts between the green wooded hills of Central Bosnia, the bare limestone landscapes of Herzegovina and the fertile agricultural flatlands in the north. The official languages in Bosnia and Herze- govina are: Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian.

Though, they are very similar and in the time of Yugoslavia they were actually one language. By learning one of these languages, the other two are automatically learned too. Sarajevo “Sarajevo – the place where East and West embrace themselves” A legend says that the destiny of the person who drinks the water at Baščaršija will be forever and inextricably linked to Sarajevo. There is at least a grain of truth in every tra- dition, and the real truth is that, if you visit at least once this city, you will always and forever return to it with joy. There are only a few places in the world that will overtake you so quickly by its charm.Sarajevo is most often called „the crossroads of East and West cultures,” but it is still far more than that.

Numerous archaeological discoveries prove that this area has been inhabited since Neo- lithic times and also there are evidences of a significant presence of the in this territory. A medieval town was located near today’s Sarajevo. However, the name of the city, derived from the Turkish words Saraj – palace and Ovasi – field, re- veals that Sarajevo, in fact, has been founded by the Ottomans. It is believed that Sarajevo was founded in the mid-fifteenth century, as the centre of the Ottoman authorities, by the Turkish regent Isa-Beg Ishakovic.

Even though Sarajevo is a relatively small city in comparison to other European capi- tals, its name is known better than the names of some of the world’s biggest cities. It has a massive spiritual and historical background must be experienced. However, several world-famous cultural events could be singled out, such as: the Sa- rajevo Film Festival, that in 20 years of existence has grown into one of the most important festivals of cin- ema in Europe; MESS – International Theatre Festival, the most significant and enduringly popular event of its kind in the region, followed by the Sarajevo Jazz Fest – International music festival which is best described by the festival’s motto: “The best jazz is where you least expect it.” East and West in this city also meet in the cuisine. In less than a half an hour walk you can find authentic Bosnian ašdžinica with indigenous dishes from this part of Europe, picturesque small taverns and luxurious big restaurants. The truth is, in fact, that each of the bars in the town is some kind of cultural event for itself: if you want some live music in a club or if you are more into intimate venues, it is enough just to step outside on the streets of Sarajevo, and you will for sure quickly find something for yourself.

9 Mostar Mostar belongs to one of the most beautiful cities in the Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Located on the banks of the and is the cultural and economic center Herzegovi- na, and also the largest city in Herzegovina. The city is named after the bridge keepers (bridge) on the banks of the River Neretva. Belongs to one of the most beautiful cities in the Bosnia and Her- zegovina. Most of the bright shiny color that changes throughout the day depending on the sun.

10 Bihać Bihać is a charming little town cantered on the banks of the River.

The area was settled from at least Illyrian and Roman times, but the town itself was first men- tioned in 1260, in a document of King Bela IV. It were these far northwest frontier lands that drew the line between the Ottomans and the Austro-Hungarians. Bihac is a charming little town centered on the banks of the Una River.

The town is teeming with café’s that inevitably gravitate around the beautiful Una. It is more than worth a visit to Bihac or any of the towns that live off these emerald waters. It is a great place for a stop over if you’re on your way down to the Croatian coast or have visited the Plitvice National Park just across the border.
