GUIDELINES FOR CONCERTS IN CHURCH DIOCESE OF HARRISBURG Office of Worship BACKGROUND AND INTRODUCTION The Church holds a vast and wonderful treasure of sacred and religious music that continually lifts the mind and heart to God. Sacred music, whether vocal or instrumental, has an integral place in our history and worship. The recent documents of Vatican II, namely, the Constitution on the Liturgy Sacrosanctum Concilium, the Instruction Musicam Sacram, the Instruction Liturgicae Instauratione, as well as the prescriptions of the Code of Canon Law, Canons 1210, 1213 and 1222 treat of the integrity and importance of music in the life of the Church. Some types of sacred music do not always have a proper place within the liturgical celebration. Gounod’s “Sanctus” from the Mass of Saint Cecilia is certainly a beautiful and spiritually moving piece, but no longer has a place during the Sunday Mass. It is not only lengthy but does not allow for the active participation of the faithful during the prominent acclamation. The “Gloria” by John Rutter, a contemporary composer and conductor, another marvelous piece of sacred music, would not have an appropriate place in the liturgy because of its length (more than seventeen minutes). Yet such magnificent music deserves to be fostered and preserved. This is done not only in recordings, but also in concerts held in public places. The increase in the number of concerts in general has given rise to a more frequent use of churches for such events. Churches are considered to be in many ways apt places for holding a concert especially because of their size, acoustics, aesthetics and even practicality (e.g., as facilities for organ recitals). -

Chaisson Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138 USA [email protected] Abstract Nature’s many varied complex systems—including galaxies, stars, planets, life, and society—are islands of order within the increasingly disordered Universe. All organized systems are subject to physical, biological or cultural evolution, which together comprise the grander interdisciplinary subject of cosmic evolution. A wealth of observational data supports the hypothesis that increasingly complex systems evolve unceasingly, uncaringly, and unpredictably from big bang to humankind. This is global history greatly extended, big history with a scientific basis, and natural history broadly portrayed across ~14 billion years of time. Human beings and our cultural inventions are not special, unique, or apart from Nature; rather, we are an integral part of a universal evolutionary process connecting all such complex systems throughout space and time. Such evolution writ large has significant potential to unify the natural sciences into a holistic understanding of who we are and whence we came. No new science (beyond frontier, non-equilibrium thermodynamics) is needed to describe cosmic evolution’s major milestones at a deep and empirical level. Quantitative models and experimental tests imply that a remarkable simplicity underlies the emergence and growth of complexity for a wide spectrum of known and diverse systems. Energy is a principal facilitator of the rising complexity of ordered systems within the expanding Universe; energy flows are as central to life and society as they are to stars and galaxies. -

In response, a small group of parents and community members aided by private philanthropy managed to reopen the school shortly thereafter as an independent Catholic school. Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA In the fifth chapter of Matthew’s Gospel, the evangelist tells us that, after seeing the crowds, Jesus went up the mountain. His disciples came to him, and he began teaching them (Mt 5:1–2). After the Beatitudes, Jesus presented the sayings on salt and light, which Daniel Harrington tells us, “serve to define the identity of those who follow Jesus faithfully.”1 You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house” (Mt 5:13–15, RNAB). As followers of the Lord Jesus who have been baptized into his passion, death, and resurrection, we are the salt of the earth and light of the world. To be salt and light, especially in today’s world, is a challenge for any Christian, but for us who have taken on diocesan and parochial responsibilities for promoting the liturgical life in our particular churches, Jesus’ teaching provides additional challenges. Given the seemingly endless number of liturgies to prepare, the constant barrage of phone calls and emails from the Christian faithful yearning to have their questions answered, and growing piles of articles and books to read to keep up-to-date on sacramental and liturgical issues, members of diocesan commissions for liturgy, music, and art and worship office staff members might understandably feel like salt that has lost its taste. -

Aus Ávila stammend war er lange Zeit in Rom – dort zudem mit einem deutlichen Bezug zu Deutschland1 – und schließlich wieder in Spanien tätig, so dass Drucke, Abschriften und Editionen seiner Werke gerade in den genannten Ländern nicht überraschen. Bisher liegen zwei im engeren Sinne musikwissenschaftliche (Gesamt-) Ausgaben seiner Werke vor: Opera omnia in acht Bänden, herausgegeben von Felipe Pedrell (Leipzig 1902–1913) und Opera omnia in vier Bänden, herausgegeben von Higinio Anglés (Barcelona 1965–1968).2 Unabhängig davon, dass die Ausgabe von Anglés ein Torso blieb, entsprechen beide Ausgaben weder nach Maßstäben der Vollständigkeit noch der Edition heutigen wissenschaftlichen Standards. Sie basieren nahezu ausschließlich auf den zu Lebzeiten des Komponisten erschienenen Drucken seiner Werke:3 • Motecta quae partim quaternis, partim quinis, alia senis, alia octonis vocibus concinuntur (Venedig 1572) 1 Auch wenn es keinerlei Belege für einen Aufenthalt Victorias in Deutschland gibt, so steht seine beson- dere Beziehung zu Deutschland außer Frage. Neben seinen vielfältigen Verbindungen zum Collegium Germanicum in Rom, an dem er zunächst Schüler, später Musiklehrer war, widmete Victoria zwei seiner Drucke politischen und kirchlichen deutschen Persönlichkeiten. Roman Catholic Liturgical Renewal Forty-Five Years after Sacrosanctum Concilium: An Assessment KEITH F. PECKLERS, S.J. Next December 4 will mark the forty-fifth anniversary of the promulgation of the Second Vatican Council’s Constitution on the Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium, which the Council bishops approved with an astounding majority: 2,147 in favor and 4 opposed. The Constitution was solemnly approved by Pope Paul VI—the first decree to be promulgated by the Ecumenical Council. Vatican II was well aware of change in the world—probably more so than any of the twenty ecumenical councils that preceded it.1 It had emerged within the complex social context of the Cuban missile crisis, a rise in Communism, and military dictatorships in various corners of the globe. President John F. Kennedy had been assassinated only twelve days prior to the promulgation of Sacrosanctum Concilium.2 Despite those global crises, however, the Council generally viewed the world positively, and with a certain degree of optimism. The credibility of the Church’s message would necessarily depend on its capacity to reach far beyond the confines of the Catholic ghetto into the marketplace, into non-Christian and, indeed, non-religious spheres.3 It is important that the liturgical reforms be examined within such a framework. The extraordinary unanimity in the final vote on the Constitution on the Liturgy was the fruit of the fifty-year liturgical movement that had preceded the Council. The movement was successful because it did not grow in isolation but rather in tandem with church renewal promoted by the biblical, patristic, and ecumenical movements in that same historical period. -
