He has an undergraduate degree from Auburn University and graduate degrees from Cor- nell University. Dr. Perry has spent summers working in industry and at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. He has been with the cooperative extension system at the University of Vermont since 1981, working directly with the industry and region and touring peren- nial gardens and nurseries worldwide. Research during his tenure in Vermont has focused primarily on herbaceous perennials and has covered all aspects of perennial cul- ture, particularly overwintering and hardiness. Prof. Popova 2, 197376 St. Petersburg, Russia 4 These authors contributed equally to this publication The phylogeny and evolution of the Arctium-Cousinia complex, including Arctium, Cousinia as one of the largest genera of Asteraceae, Hypacanthium and Schmalhausenia, is investigated. This group of genera has its highest diversity in the Irano-Turanian region and the mountains of Central Asia. We generated ITS and rpS4-trnT-trnL sequences for altogether 138 species, including 129 (of ca. 600) species of Cousinia. As found in previous analyses, Cousinia is not monophyletic. Instead, Cousinia subgg. Cynaroides and Hypacanthodes with together ca. 30 species are more closely related to Arctium, Hypacanthium and Schmalhausenia (Arc- tioid clade) than to subg. Cousinia (Cousinioid clade). The Arctioid and Cousiniod clades are also supported by pollen morphology and chromosome number as reported earlier. In the Arctioid clade, the distribution of morphological characters important for generic delimitation, mainly leaf shape and armature and morphology of involucral bracts, are highly incongruent with phylogenetic relationships as implied by the molecular data.

This challenge is most serious in tribe Caryophylleae since the supposed genera seem to be highly artificial, and the available morphological evidence cannot effectively be used for delimitation and exact determination of taxa. The main goal of the present study was to re-assess the monophyly of the genera currently recognized in this tribe using molecular phylogenetic data. We used the sequences of nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and the chloroplast gene rps16 for 135 and 94 accessions, respectively, representing all 16 genera currently recognized in the tribe Caryophylleae, with a rich sampling of Gypsophila as one of the most heterogeneous groups in the tribe.

In the current study, Streptomyces cellulosae isolate Actino 48 is tested as a biocontrol agent for the management of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and inducing tomato plant systemic resistance under greenhouse conditions. Foliar application of a cell pellet suspension of Actino 48 (2 107 cfu. mL 1) is performed at 48 h before inoculation with TMV. Peroxidase activity, × − chitinase activity, protein content, and the total phenolic compounds are measured in tomato leaves at 21 dpi. On the other hand, the TMV accumulation level and the transcriptional changes of five tomato defense-related genes (PAL, PR-1, CHS, PR-3, and PR-2) are studied.

Cucumber mosaic is a viral disease of worldwide distribution that affects over 1200 plant species. Hosts include a wide range of fruits, vegetables, herbaceous and woody ornamentals, and weeds. (Photos courtesy of Russ Groves) What does cucumber mosaic look like? Symptoms of cucumber mosaic can vary widely depending on host species, host variety, and time of infection. Typical symptoms include stunting of entire plants, mosaic or mottling (i.e., blotchy white, yellow, and light green areas) and ring spots (i.e., ring-like areas of discolored tissue) on leaves and fruits, and a variety of growth distortions such as cupping, puckering and strapping (i.e., elongation and thinning) of leaves as well as warts on fruits. In extreme situations, parts of an affected plant or even an entire plant may die from the disease. Where does cucumber mosaic come from? Cucumber mosaic is caused by Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) which can overwinter in susceptible biennial or perennial weeds, as well as in perennial agricultural crops (e.g., alfalfa) and perennial herbaceous and woody ornamentals. Seeds and even pollen from certain host plants can carry the virus, and thus the virus can be spread via these plant parts.

To test the frequency of viral infections in production fields in Central Poland, samples were collected over three years from two cultivars and two plantations, and tested for the presence of Arabis mosaic (ArMV), Cucumber mosaic (CMV), Narcissus latent (NLV), Narcissus mosaic (NMV) and the potyvirus group using the Enzyme Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay. Potyviruses, NLV and NMV were detected in almost all leaf samples in both cultivars, in all three years of testing. Other viruses were detected in a limited number of samples. In most cases mixed infections were present. Tests on bulbs have shown the presence of potyviruses and NMV, with the higher number of positives in cultivar ‘Carlton’. In addition, for most viruses an increase in their detectability was observed on both plantations in subse- quent seasons. WETMORE BIOLOGICAL LABORATORIES, HARVARD UNIVERSITY Communicated April 26, 1957 There has been considerable interest of late in the transition of seemingly vege- tative shoots of angiosperms into "reproductive" axes with their appendages. The flowering shoot formed in this manner is assumed to be a reflection of a change or changes which must have taken place in the activity of the apical meristem. It is well known for certain angiosperms that a proper period of photoinduction will bring about flowering. While a considerable amount of information has accumu- lated on the responses of plants to photoperiodism, very few correlative anatomical studies have been made of the same plant material. Descriptive studies do exist for some angiosperms, but most of these are unrelated to controlled experimental studies on the effects of photoperiodism. Not all inflorescences or flowers are clearly transformations of shoots that were previously vegetative, for buds continue to be formed in some species after the plant has been induced to flower. Whether the apices of these later-formed buds exhibit initially a structure comparable to the parent vegetative shoot apex or whether they are, from their inception, fundamentally different in organization has not been elucidated. For many years the structure of shoot apical meristems in angiosperms has Leens described in terms of planes of cell divisions. In most angiosperms there is a dis- crete outer layer or layers (tunica), the cells of which show a preferred plane of cell division. New cell walls are perpendicular to the surface of the shoot apex.

We were staying just a few minutes away at the comfortable Ark Hotel, where we checked in and were soon in our rooms settling down for a night’s sleep before the start of the tour. Day 2 Thursday 30th May Fllake-Sektori Rinia Lagoon, Karavasta, Berat We had a full programme after our breakfast in Tirana before heading for the scenic UNESCO city of Berat, our base for the next couple of days. We first visited the Rinia lagoon close to the capital and we were blessed with some pleasantly warm sunshine. This area is a popular beach location, but being a weekday there was little disturbance. Our first stop before the main lagoon was the unprotected site of a large Bee-eater breeding colony. Over 200 pairs breed here in total and we watched over 40 pairs. We also saw several Red-rumped Swallows here, had good views of a vocal Cuckoo and a Great Reed Warbler sang in the dyke.

    PRINCIPAL TYPES OF VEGETATIVE SHOOT APEX ORGANIZATION IN VASCULAR PLANTS1 RICHARD A. POPHAM Department of Botany and Plant Pathology, The Ohio State University, Columbus 10 Before progress can be made in research, a problem must be recognized. Once the problem has been perceived, a research program may be directed toward a solution. The problem of how and where a shoot grows and the organization of the shoot apex was apparently first conceived by Kaspar Friedrich Wolff (1759). Although his observations on the structure, formation, and growth of cells were fantastically inaccurate, he made a great contribution to our knowledge of the growing plant by setting forth a new and important problem. In a very real sense, Wolff is the father of developmental plant anatomy. Disagreement is the life blood of many research problems. Strenuous opposition is often engendered by a dogmatic statement or a theory which is proposed as a universal truth. Opposition to Wolff's (1759) original proposition regarding the organization and growth of shoot apices prompted plant anatomists, some 85 years later, to investigate the truth of the statement. The factual solution of the problem of shoot apex organization had its beginnings in the work of Nageli (1845). Following this work on many lower cryptogams, Nageli concluded that the cells of all tissues of the shoot of cryptogams and higher plants have their genesis in a single apical cell. The new-born apical cell theory supported by Hofmeister (1851) and others provided the impetus for a renewed, vigorous attack on the problem of shoot apex organization. A little later a new proposal, Hanstein's (1868) histogen theory was born of more careful observations and in a mind unfettered by the prevailing fanaticism of the apical cell theorists.
