Ers ei sefydlu mae’r Gymdeithas wedi cynnal ei hymgyrchoedd, ei phrotestiadau a'i gweithgareddau er mwyn hyrwyddo’r defnydd o’r Gymraeg ym mywydau bob dydd pobl Cymru ac ennill statws swyddogol iddi. Yn ystod y 1960au a’r 1970au canolbwyntiodd ar gael dogfennaeth fel trwyddedau, tystysgrifau a biliau wedi eu darparu yn y Gymraeg, bod y Gymraeg yn cael ei rhoi ar arwyddion ffyrdd a bod gwasanaeth radio a theledu yn cael ei ddarparu yn y Gymraeg. Defnyddiwyd dulliau di-drais fel cynnal ralïau, gwrthod derbyn gwasanaethau os nad oeddent yn y Math mudiad Gymraeg, a gwrthod talu am drwyddedau teledu.
