Seller Insight

Originally built in the early 18th century, Appletrees is an extremely attractive family home that has been beautifully and very sensitively renovated and refurbished by the current owners. “I’d say that it was a real combination of the style of the house, its wonderful character and this gorgeous village location that sold it to us when we found it twelve years ago,” say the owners. “Back then it was rather tired and unloved, but we could see that it had loads of potential, and so over time we’ve breathed new life into it and turned it into a really lovely family home.”

“Behind the scenes we’ve done a lot of work, updating the central heating system so it’s now much more efficient and we’ve also had the whole house rewired. Internally we’ve updated the kitchen and the bathrooms, we rejigged the layout to create a much more spacious family bathroom and we’ve decorated throughout using pale, neutral tones that enhance the feeling of light and space no end. The house is now a warm and comfortable home, and one that’s ideal for modern family life, but we also wanted to preserve its sense of history, so original features such as the exposed beams and the gorgeous inglenook fireplace in the living room have been restored and enhanced. It’s a really pretty house and I’d say we’ve struck a really good balance between old and new.”

“Something else that attracted us to the property when we first came across it was the fact that it sits on a generous plot so it has lovely gardens front and rear.” continue the owners. “To the front we have a large area of lawn with a pretty path leading straight up to the front door, and to the back is another large area with an open lawn, a mature shrub border, a big patio and an Indian sandstone path that leads to the summerhouse. The garden is very peaceful, and because the property sits in a slightly elevated position, the views across the valley are really quite something.”

Favourite room: “The sitting room is probably our favourite. It has oak beams and features the most lovely inglenook in which we’ve had a wood burning stove installed. The room is double aspect, so wonderfully light and bright, but when the fire is roaring away on a cold and miserable day, it has such a warm and cosy atmosphere.”

Favourite aspect of the grounds or surrounding area: “We’re not far from places such as and Bicester, but it’s the rural aspect of our location that we’ve enjoyed the most. There are three lovely villages we can walk to, each with cosy pubs, and we also love driving over to Woodstock and walking the grounds of Blenheim Palace. We’re also within striking distance of the Cotswolds so in actual fact we’re spoilt for choice in terms of the countryside walks that we’ve been able to enjoy.”

Memorable event (if not another favourite room or unique feature): “The summerhouse that was built just a few months ago has been a wonderful addition to the property. For us it’s been a lovely quiet place to sit on a warm summer’s evening, with a glass of wine enjoying the quite magnificent sunsets.”

What they’ll miss most / why they are leaving: “We’ve put a lot of love into this house and it has been such a happy home,” say the owners. “In terms of what we’ll miss, there’s just so much: the warm and welcoming feel of the house, our beautiful gardens, the views across the Cherwell valley, the people we’ve met while living in the village… We have no doubt that the new owners are going to love living here every bit as much as we have.”*
