Spiritual Responses to the Regulation of Birth (A Historical Comparison) Richard J. Fehring, D.N.Sc, R.N. Elizabeth McGraw, B.A., R.N. ABSTRACT Over 30 years ago the founders of the Christian Family Movement (CFM), a worldwide Catholic family action group, conducted a survey to investigate the marital effects of practicing “rhythm.” Their final report indicated that many participants felt that periodic abstinence was harmful to their marriage and caused spiritual and religious distress. The CFM survey results were thought to have been influential in convincing the 1966 Papal Birth Control Commission to recommend a change in church teaching. The purpose of this paper is to report a re-analysis of the 1966 archived data (in the light of the Papal Encyclical Humane Vitae–On the Regulation of Birth) and to compare that study with responses from married couples using modern methods of NFP, i.e., methods that purport to be more effective and to have fewer days of periodic abstinence. This paper will provide an examination of the original study within its historical context and report on the responses relating to spirituality from the 1966 couples in comparison with couples currently practicing periodic abstinence through the Billings Ovulation Method.

Church History Church History and and Religious Culture 99 (2019) 504–523 Religious Culture brill.com/chrc The International Union of Social Studies of Malines and the Catholic Cultural Turn Drafting a Moral Code at the End of the Constantinian Era Dries Bosschaert KU Leuven [email protected] Abstract The present article argues that the unexpected end of the Union de Malines’ Code de morale culturelle, an international collaboration of prominent twentieth-century Catholic moral theologians, should be attributed to three shifts in Catholic Social Teaching, only the first two of which the Union de Malines managed to undergo: from scholastic hegemony to theological diversity, from social doctrine to personalism, and from a juridical style of writing to a humanistic one. Particularly this last shift, intro- duced by the Second Vatican Council, proved to be a too big a leap for the Union, understood as a ‘little social tradition,’ to take. The cultural turn, which the Union de Malines had in fact anticipated, proved by the end of the council to belong to the future. • Introduction (With Major Focus of the Text)
St. Charles Borromeo Seminary “The Integral Vision of Man as Structured around the Goods of Marriage” Paper Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Master of Arts Degree in Theology Rev. Mr. James F. O’Neill Jr. 23 March 2007 Advisor: Rev. J. Brian Bransfield 1 INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to examine the regulation of birth under the aspect of the integral vision of man as this vision is structured around the goods of marriage. The first chapter will address the moral reasoning of the integral vision of man as central to Pope Paul VI’s Encyclical Letter Humanae Vitae.1 Paul VI considered numerous aspects related to the question of the regulation of birth. The Papal Commission which made the controversial recommendation of approval of the use of the anovulant pill for regulation of birth presented Paul VI with material to be addressed in Humanae Vitae. Paul VI recognized that the “transmission of human life is a most serious role in which married people collaborate freely and responsibly with God the Creator.”2 At the same time the Church likewise regarded “matters intimately connected with the life and happiness of human beings.”3 The second chapter addresses the manner in which the three goods of marriage as taught by St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, Casti Connubii, and Gaudium et Spes form the basis for Paul VI’s teaching on responsible parenthood and birth regulation.4 Paul VI depended upon 1 Pope Paul VI, “The Genesis of Humanae Vitae,” (general audience, 31 July 1968), Acta Apostolicae Sedis 60, no.

  • The Bishop's Role of Pastoral Governance
The Bishop’s Role of Pastoral Governance: Its Interpretation and Reception by the Magisterium since Vatican II Submitted for the Degree Doctorate in Philosophy By Paul G. Gadie Supervisor: Dr. Eugene Duffy Submitted to the University of Limerick, March 2015 Abstract Author: Paul G. Gadie Title: The Bishop’s Role of Pastoral Governance since Vatican II: Its Subsequent Interpretation and Reception by the Magisterium This thesis will assess the interpretation and reception of the bishop’s role of pastoral governance by the Magisterium since the Second Vatican Council (1962- 65). Historically, this episcopal role had been increasingly restricted from the Council of Trent (1545-63) to the First Vatican Council (1869-70). Due to Vatican I’s premature end only papal governance was legislated for. Subsequently, the increasing dominance of the Roman School of Theology and of Ultramontanism located the exercise of Church governance in the Pope and the Roman Curia. While the bishop exercised a small measure of governance within his diocese, he was portrayed as the local Church manager of the universal Church. Vatican II defined a new and more expanded role of episcopal governance, expressed in a pastoral mode. Vatican II described episcopal governance of the local Church, but also of the universal Church, shared with and always under the leadership of the Pope. Using a hermeneutical approach suggested by Ormond Rush, three key Vatican II documents will be analysed to reveal the process of authorship and their understanding of episcopal governance. Rush’s hermeneutics will also help to analyse the reception of episcopal pastoral governance after the Council.
