INTRODUCTION Preservation and cultivation of national identity is a fundamental human right. First and most important sign of this identity is the mother tongue. Learning mother tongue in school means also learning about culture of the origin and its elements. Preservation and development of national identity is difficult in living conditions outside motherland1, and this is manifested much more in younger generations, especially among children born abroad. Therefore, the school is the most appropriate institution to developed and teach-learn linguistic and cultural competence with professional care, therefore, this school is already known as Albanian School of Supplementary Learning in Diaspora. Curriculum of Albanian School of Supplementary Learning in Diaspora, primarily is dedicated to Albanian children and youth (students) living abroad. This document is part of the permanent aim of new generation awareness raising in relation to the language and culture of origin, as an advantage, and in particular their personal and national identity, while on the other hand, a support for their integration in the society where they live. -

Visualizing Virtual Borders: Identity Territorialization Shifts and “Imagined Geographies” in the Albanian case BY Ilir Kalemaj Submitted to Central European University Doctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy and International Relations In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Supervisor: Prof. Erin Jenne (PhD) Budapest, Hungary CEU eTD Collection 1 DECLARATION I hereby declare that no parts of this thesis have been submitted towards a degree at any other institution different from CEU. I hereby declare that this thesis contains no materials previously written and/or published by any other person, except where appropriate acknowledgment is made in the form of bibliographical reference. Ilir Kalemaj March 10, 2013 ------------------------------------------------ Signature CEU eTD Collection 2 Abstract The primary research question that this dissertation addresses is: Why national borders change and why they are perceived differently inside versus outside of the state? What motivates such changes and what are the primary actors and factors that make groups have a certain mapping perception and when virtual shifts occur? This broad and general question is broken down into two empirical and specific questions: (1) how the understanding of the Albanian nation takes on different geographical borders over time-- with some periods associated with the Albanian nation mapping onto Albania's state borders and other periods the Albanian nation expanding on the broader concept of "Greater Albania", and (2) why different Albanian communities (in Albania in one hand and Macedonia and Kosovo on the other) have often imagined the borders of the Albanian nation differently at the same point in time? This dissertation, builds on the argument that power struggles between ‗internal‘ and ‗external‘ (diasporic) elites plays the primary role in building political agendas that create national borders. -
Homer's Influence on Naim Frashëri's Poem 'History of Skanderbeg'
ISSN 2039-2117 (online) Mediterranean Journal of Social Sciences Vol 4 No 4 ISSN 2039-9340 (print) Published by MCSER-CEMAS-Sapienza University of Rome March 2013 Homer’s Influence on Naim Frashëri’s Poem ‘History of Skanderbeg’ Edlira Dhima Ismail Qemal University of Vlora College of Human Sciences Department of Language and Literature Vlora, Albania E-mail: [email protected] Ermelinda Kashahu University “Eqrem Cabej” Faculty of Education and Social Sciences Department of Literature Gjirokastër, Albania [email protected] Doi: 10.5901/mjss.2013.v4n4p235 Abstract Naim Frashëri—the most ardent sonneteer of the beauty and antiquity of Albanian language, of his fatherland’s countryside, of the charm and antiquity of Albania’s most gorgeous cities and locations, of its national historical figures, of its lofty ideals of freedom, independence, and education—is certainly the apostle of the Albanian people’s newly-found faith in its literature and cultural history. The Naimian literary work is an oeuvre of high purposes and values, in that it “seeks and finds its purpose in the outside self”; it is “the esthetic, moral and meaningful nimbus” of the great Albanian Renaissance Literature, but not only.(Qosja 2000). Naim’s influence on Albanian writers has been and will continue to be extraordinary. From the time he was alive, many of his verses were set to music and performed as folk songs, while bringing the Albanian language up to the level of a beautifully weaved literary language. An interesting object of study for the experienced and new researcher alike would be the influence of Greek and Roman antiquity and philosophy on the poet’s humanist and literary formation, even though an Eastern influence appeared to be stronger. -

International Journal of Language Academy the INFLUENCE of TURKISH LITERATURE INTO ALBANIAN LITERATURE DURING the OTTOMAN PERIOD
International Journal of Language Academy ISSN: 2342-0251 Volume 3/1 Spring 2015 p. 1/7 THE INFLUENCE OF TURKISH LITERATURE INTO ALBANIAN LITERATURE DURING THE OTTOMAN PERIOD Osmanlı Döneminde Türk Edebiyatının Arnavut Edebiyatına Etkisi Xhemile ABDIU1 & Spartak KADIU2 Abstract It is widely known that after the conquest of Istanbul, the Balkan Peninsula in Europe has become the most important focus of the Ottoman conquest. Due to almost all of historical developments and changes in the Balkan Peninsula during the Ottoman administration, a lot of changes appear in the culture of people of this region, in their education, in their language and traditions. In this land, the Ottomans built many architectural monuments such as mosques, shrines, bridges, caravanserai and baths. In a short time, various forms of arts related to the Ottoman culture spread in Balkan countries. Local trade and economy developed. After Balkan countries accepted Islam, they adapted to the principles of this religion. When the Ottomans came to the Balkans they settled both in cities and villages. The Ottomans brought or created there their families and tried to preserve their language, literature, traditions and customs. In the areas where they settled, the most beautiful examples of initially Turkish and later Arabian and Persian oral folk literature are seen. First, people learnt this oral literature in military settlements. Then, they replicated this kind of literature in their homes, schools and madrasas, as well as in some places of the Tarikat sect. Types of Turkish folk literature and to a lesser extent types of Arabic and Persian literature, remain today as a heritage from generation to generation. -
