Diversity and longitudinal distribution of freshwater fish in Klawing River, Central Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 19: 85-92. The aims of this study were to evaluate the diversity and longitudinal distribution of fish in Klawing River, Purbalingga (Central Java). The survey was performed using a clustered random- sampling technique. The river was divided into upstream, midstream and downstream regions. Species diversity was measured as the number of species, and the longitudinal distribution was assessed by determining the fish species present in each of the three regions. Eighteen fish species of eleven families were identified in the Klawing River: Cyprinidae, Bagridae, Mastacembelidae, Anabantidae, Cichlidae, Channidae, Eleotrididae, Beleontinidae, Osphronemidae, Poecilidae, and Siluridae. Cyprinidae exhibited the highest number of species (six), followed by Bagridae and Cichlidae (two species each). The other families were represented by one species each. A single cluster analysis showed that the upstream population had a similarity of 78% and 50% with the midstream and downstream populations, respectively. Species and family diversities were higher in the midstream populations than in the upstream and downstream populations.

Indonesia dam builder refuses new study to assess impact on orangutans https://news.mongabay.com/2020/08/indonesia-hydropower-dam-tapan... Indonesia dam builder refuses new study to assess impact on orangutans Hans Nicholas Jong A dam developer in Indonesia has rebuffed calls for an independent study to assess the impact of the project on the critically endangered Tapanuli orangutan. The species, numbering fewer than 800, is found only in the Batang Toru forest in Sumatra, which is also the site of a hydropower project that conservationists say threatens the survival of the great ape and livelihoods of local communities. The IUCN has led calls for an independent assessment, citing a litany of inaccurate and misleading claims stemming from the project developer’s various statements and publications. JAKARTA — Developers of a hydropower dam that threatens the only known habitat of a critically endangered orangutan say they will push on despite calls from the IUCN for an independent study into the impact of the project. Emmy Hafild, a senior adviser to project developer PT North Sumatra Hydro Energy (NSHE), said there were “already enough studies” on the ecosystem of the Batang Toru forest in Indonesia’s Sumatra Island, home to the Tapanuli orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis). “The problem is that people are picking studies that fit [their agenda] to frame” the project as threatening the environment, she said. She added the best way to save the Tapanuli orangutan is to sustainably manage the ecosystem by involving all stakeholders, including companies operating in the area. Emmy’s remarks come in the wake of mounting calls from scientists, conservationists and environmental activists for the hydropower project to at least be halted pending an assessment of how it will affect the orangutans.

Batang Toru Dam Indonesia Sectors: Hydroelectric Power Generation On record This profile is no longer actively maintained, with the information now possibly out of date Send feedback on this profile By: Friends of the Earth US Created on: Aug 20 2018 Last update: Mar 6 2020 Project website Status Planning Design Agreement Construction Operation Closure Decommission Sectors Hydroelectric Power Generation Location Status Planning Design Agreement Construction Operation Closure Decommission About Batang Toru Dam The Batang Toru Dam is a proposed hydroelectric dam project in the fragile Batang Toru ecosystem, North Sumatra. The project is expected to generate 510 MW electricity for six hours a day and will occupy several hundred hectares of prime habitat along the Batang Toru River in the South Tapanuli district, but would impact a much larger area. Currently, land is being developed and cleared for the project. PT North Sumatra Hydro Energy (PT NSHE) is developing the project, originally announcing plans for the hydropower plant in 2012. The dam is slated to become operational by 2022 and is expected to cost USD 1.6 billion. Latest developments Bank of China to evaluate Batang Toru hydropower plant project Mar 14 2019 Bank of China faces international day of action over Batang Toru finance Mar 7 2019 Why this profile? The Batang Toru Dam will have potentially irreversible environmental, social, and biodiversity impacts on the North Sumatra region in Indonesia. The Batang Toru ecosystem is a critical habitat for many endangered species including Sumatran tigers, sun bears, agile gibbons, and pangolins. This ecosystem is the only known habitat of the newly discovered Tapanuli orangutan, of which less than 800 currently remain – making it the most endangered Great Ape species in the world.
