However, food delivery employees had experienced a series of problems. For example, a common traffic accident might risk their lives by catching more orders. Thus, the thesis’ focus is on employees’ working experience in the case of Foodpanda. The study explores how Foodpanda is becoming a new business and work through survey and in-depth interview with Foodpanda employees. I have a major finding of this study. It shows a sense of relative autonomy argued by the employees who choose this work because it is a flexible job that is very suitable for people who do not want to be restricted by time.

2016-2017 INTRODUCTION The Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange (the Foundation) was established in 1989 in memory of the outstanding achievements of the late President of the Republic of China, Chiang Ching- kuo (1910-1988). The Foundation’s mission is to promote the study of Chinese culture and society, as well as enhance international scholarly exchange. Its principal work is to award grants and fellowships to institutions and individuals conducting Sinological and Taiwan-related research, thereby adding new life to Chinese cultural traditions while also assuming responsibility for the further development of human civilization. Operational funds supporting the Foundation’s activities derive from interest generated from an endowment donated by both the public and private sectors. As of June 1, 2017, the size of this endowment totaled NT$3.62 billion. The Foundation is governed by its Board of Directors (consisting of between 15 and 21 Board Members), as well as 3 Supervisors. Our central headquarters is located in Taipei, Taiwan, with a regional office near Washington D.C. in McLean, Virginia. In addition, the Foundation currently maintains four overseas centers: the Chiang Ching-kuo International Sinological Center at Charles University in Prague (CCK-ISC); the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation Inter-University Center for Sinology at Harvard University (CCK-IUC); the Chinese University of Hong Kong – Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation Asia-Pacific Centre for Chinese Studies (CCK-APC); and the European Research Center on Contemporary Taiwan – A CCK Foundation Overseas Center at Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen (CCKF-ERCCT). In addition to intrinsic factors of restaurants (e.g. food style, price, and taste), a good recommendation system should also consider users' context information such as purpose of gathering and the type of companions. Although there are many context-aware restaurant recommenders, most of them only focus on location information. This research aims to incorporate more useful contexts into recommendation process. Unlike extensive work on explicit user ratings of restaurants, this paper utilizes users' restaurant booking history to recommend restaurants. Each booking record contains the dining contexts, e.g. dining date and number of companion, a user leaves when he reserve the restaurant. In this paper, we proposed to use PITF-BPR algorithm to model the context contained in restuarant booking history. Experiments were conducted using the three-year booking history from EZTable, the largest online restaurant booking service in Taiwan, to see the improvements of recommender after we modeled the event contexts. 1. • “The Cost of Political Tension: an Anatomy”
TSE‐484 April 2014 “The Cost of Political Tension: An Anatomy” Yinghua He, Ulf Nielsson and Yonglei Wang The Cost of Political Tension: An Anatomy Yinghua Hea Ulf Nielssonb Yonglei Wanga April 2014 Abstract The paper examines how increased political tension affects stock returns and identifies the channels through which this occurs. Focusing on Taiwan’s sovereign debate, we find that non-violent events harming the political relationship with mainland China are associated with an average daily drop of 200 basis points in Taiwanese stock returns. Expectations of mild tension also adversely affect stock returns. The impact is stronger on firms located close to potential conflict zones and on Taiwanese firms openly supporting the pro-independence party. The adverse effect on political opponents concentrates on those firms economically exposed to mainland China through either investments or exports. THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF CHINESE TAIWAN AND THE CATALYSTS OF NATIONAL IDENTITY FORMATION ASHLYN MCKEE SPRING 2018 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for baccalaureate degrees in Chinese and International Relations with honors in Chinese Reviewed and approved* by the following: Erica Brindley Professor of Asian Studies, History and Philosophy Thesis Supervisor Nicolai Volland Assistant Professor in Asian Studies and Comparative Literature Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis is to shed light on an emerging and unique Taiwanese identity and its implications regarding cross-Strait relations. Taiwan has a tumultuous history, which has included invasion and occupation by both the Japanese and the Dutch. Now, and since the Cultural Revolution occurred in mainland China, Taiwan has been a country split between two identities. The first, is the ideal that Taiwan is Chinese— politically, culturally, and ethnically. The opposing idea holds that while China and its culture has been a large influence, Taiwan has developed separately from China and has experienced a history distinct from China’s own history; as such, Taiwanese identity is simply not Chinese. First, my thesis will discuss identity formation in general terms in order to set the parameters of identity for the rest of the paper. Next, my thesis will attempt to analyze contemporary Taiwanese history, specifically from 1990 to the present, to divulge information about the recent spotlight on Taiwanese identity. Third, my thesis will discuss the rise to power of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP henceforth) in Taiwan and how its administration is shaping identity and relations with the mainland.
