Maurice Arthur Pope Collection AN 20030022-001 Page 1 of 71 Canadian War Museum Finding Aid Maurice Arthur Pope Collection Accession number 20030022-001 Dates: 1852-1969 Extent: 2000 letters in 3 boxes, or 96.0 cm. Biographical Sketch: Maurice Arthur Pope was born 29 August 1889 at his parents’ summer home at St. Patrick, Temiscquata County, Quebec. He was the third son of Joseph Pope (who, at the time, was the private secretary of Sir John A. Macdonald) and of Henriette, the eldest daughter of Sir Henri Thomas Taschereau. Maurice received his early education in Ottawa at both the Model school and the Ottawa Collegiate Institute. Keen on sports, he ran with the Ottawa Harriers while attending high school. During the summer of 1905 he worked in a hydrographic party, which was engaged in surveying the route for the prepared Georgian Bay ship canal. During the summers of 1906 and 1907 he was employed in the construction of docks on the Louis embankment in Quebec City. He entered McGill University in the fall of 1906 to begin his studies in civil engineering and was an enthusiastic member of a fraternity. After a difficult second year at McGill, he decided to take a year off, during which he worked at Frankford on the construction of the Trent valley canal. He returned to McGill in the fall of 1909, worked for a contractor on a building extension in Montreal in the summer of 1910, and graduated from McGill in 1911. He then joined the Engineering department of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in Montreal.

  • Colonel Commandant Honour Board
Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery Honorary Appointments Colonels Commandant Establishment The Honorary Colonel concept was ad hoc until 1955 when a Colonel Commandant was appointed in each State. This was promulgated as follows: “The Military Board has considered the scale of appointment, duties and privileges of Honorary Colonels / Colonels Commandant. Military Board Instruction 186 dated 28 Sep 56 on this subject has been issued.” Review and Revised Structure During 2016 - 2019 the RCC and HOR implemented a review of the role and support provided by the long-standing existing Colonels Commandant structure. The outcome saw a move away from geographically state based appointments and the adoption of a dedicated Colonel Command for each RAA Regiment. One of these CC will continue to be appointed concurrently as the Representative Colonel Commandant. IN MEMORIAM 205 While we were attempting N andakna the other member of the party visited the Ronti Pass, camping a few hundred feet below the summit, and rejoined us. at the base. Thanks to Umrao Singh our relays of atta and vegetables from Sutol reached us in the upper valley without a hitch. However, we had relied on bharal to supplement our tinned meat and never saw a sign of one. There were monal pheasant and jungle fowl in plenty in the Upper Nandagini and we should have been better off with a shotgun than a rifle. IN MEMORIAM ARTHUR OLIVER WHEELER I860-l945 THE Grand Old Man of Canadian mountaineering has at last in his 85th year bid goodbye to his beloved mountains to pass on to the summits that lie beyond. In the history of Alpine sport and scientific exploration in the Rockies Wheeler will always occupy the place that in an earlier generation men like C. E. Mathews and Tyndall occupied., both in the literal and in the spiritual sense, in the opening up of the Alps. In him long sustained personal achievement and the power . of inspiring others, scientific interest and the sheer joy of doing and beholding, were blended in a characteristic and irresistibly infectious enthusiasm. Born in 186o, of a younger branch of an old Irish county family, he came out with his parents to Canada in 1876 and took up the pro fession of land surveying in the Province of Ontario. His work took him steadily westwards, first to the~. still largely unexplored country north of the Great Lakes, then to the Manitoban prairie where, in I 88 5, he played his part, as an officer in the Intelligence.
