The village of Turnbotham Round has the reputation of being the safest place in England with not a single crime committed in 10 years 4 months and 5 days. Which just happens to be the exact same amount of time that Sergeant Samuel Dudfoot Will Hay has been in charge of the local police station. Unfortunately when that information comes to the attention of the Chief Constable he threatens to close the station down and put Dudfoot and his two constables out of work, so it now falls to them to come up with some crime. Luckily, and unsurprisingly, the very thing they need has Ask a Policeman going on under their noses for at least the last 10 years 4 months…. This is a hugely enjoyable yarn about three incompetent and Ask a Policeman bent coppers who somehow manage to thwart a major smuggling operation. This is a lot of fun, I've liked Will Hay comedies since I first saw them as a boy, and this one Ask a Policeman solid, with snappy, amusing dialogue from the shady, but good-hearted, boys. Also with the wonderful Graham Moffatt and Moore Marriott. This is a very British comedy, however, and I'm not sure it will travel well. It's like an early prototype of the St Trinians movies, if that paints a picture. Ask a Policeman has Will Ask a Policeman and his incompetent gang as village police officers. With this recipe, no other outcome is possible except a classic British comedy. Ask a Policeman is a wonderful comedy with plenty of laughs to be had. Hay is Sgt Dudfoot, who is quite possibly cinema's most incompetent copper. He is based in the sleepy village Ask a Policeman Turnbotham Round, where there has been no crime for a decade. After the Chief Constable informs them that there is not enough local crime to justify the existence of their station, Dudfoot and two other officers set about staging crimes in order to keep their jobs. What I love about these films is that when viewed today they truly act as a time capsule of a particular place and time. Due to their incompetence they are blissfully unaware of the smuggling going on right under their noses. This is slap stick comedy at it's best and Will Hay was a master of it but his two co stars Graham Moffatt as Albert and Moore Marriott as Harbottle also play their parts as well. This is definitely a film that is a product of it's time with regards to the type of comedy…. Will Hay and the gang deal with smugglers. Not quite as good as Oh Mr. Porter but still fun. Remade years later with Cannon and Ball. Well if you're going to copy, you might as well copy the best - and The Ghost Train and Oh, Mr Porter are excellent and brilliant, respectively. As is this for about 50 minutes, then it flounders horrendously into a long, drawn out sort of chase sequence, which forgets to include many jokes, any tension or much of a point. By the end, and the final scene, even Will Hay seems to have lost interest. Silly nonsense, but quality silly nonsense. And if that's what you are looking for, you could do a lot worse. When you think of classic black and white talkie comedies you probably go to St. Trinian's if you are British like me anyways but Ask a Policeman Hay as a school master, police man or fireman reaches those same heights. Ask a Policeman is a close second to Oh Mr Porter based on the films Ask a Policeman have seen so far. The crooked cop scenes are outstanding and all achieved with straight faces. The script is sharp and funny with lots of slapstick humour thrown in. If you need a pick me up then stick it on. Shame, as the first part is a hoot. Unfortunately, this is more to do with the inability of Sgt Dudfoot and his constables Jerry and Harbottle to so much as recognise a crime. With their jobs on the line, the trio attempt to stage a crime of their own, only to inadvertently uncover a smuggling ring and a headless horseman Written by D. Because "Oh Mr Porter" was filmed two years earlier, it gets more favour from the critics, but although this film was a reworking of that plot, it stands up equally, if not better. My favourite being when Harbottle Marriott already playing a much older man takes them to see his father, played by himself. Just shows what a superb actor he was. Probably due to over use! Well, that's the popular opinion, but when a BBC broadcast is Ask a Policeman to stage a programme about the fact, it quickly becomes clear there may be other reasons for the complete lack of arrests made. The head of the police station is Sergeant Dudfoot Ask a Policeman Hayand he oversees the two constables, the ageing Harbottle Moore Marriott and the younger, rotund Albert Graham Moffattbut when the announcer inquires about the peaceful situation they appear at the window with rabbits they have poached, drunks start carousing in the Ask a Policeman and a car speeds by doing a hundred miles an hour Needless to say, the broadcast is hastily wrapped up, and the scene and personality of the film was set: these three policemen were simply so incompetent that they just haven't been making arrests, not because there is no crime, but because they cannot catch criminals. The actual plot revolved around sightings of the Headless Horseman who has his own legend passed down in a ditty that later everyone will have great difficulty remembering the crucial last line of, and when it is finally recalled you well understand why. The Horseman pulling a hearse is not Ask a Policeman ghost at all, of course, but then if you'd seen this team's previous entry of about two years before, you would be well aware of that. This is down to an apparent "If it ain't broke, Ask a Policeman fix it" philosophy of recycling the storyline of Oh, Mr Porter! It's probably this which prevented the later effort getting its due down the years as it does come across as a little lazy to put the same premise into practice, but this took place in a different location which gave rise to a whole new set of jokes, many of them laugh out loud funny. The butt of the gags, as so often with Hay's comedy, were the authority figures the general public suspected of being incompetent, and under his persona there was no doubt, leaving you wondering however his characters ever attained the Ask a Policeman of power that they did. In this case it was likely because nobody but Sergeant Dudfoot actually wanted the job and the locals were Ask a Policeman for him to continue since they could get away with anything they wished. Certainly the smugglers are taking advantage, even using the police station as a location Ask a Policeman their beacon to tell their cohorts the coast is clear, leading the coppers on with a story about an ailing granny who needs to see the lamp for her peace of mind Harbottle is deeply Ask a Policeman. If this sounds a bit too much like plot, rest assured many sequences here owed plenty to the stage routines of Hay where he had honed his craft in variety, most obviously the lengthy bit where the trio of bumblers try to arrest any driver they can stop for speeding, regardless of whether they were or not. This is one of the funniest bits the team ever enacted they end up knocking their victim cold with the speed limit sign they've rustled up, all the better to take him back to the station! But there were many delights in Ask a Policeman, not least the visit to the ancient Harbottle's even more ancient father also played by Marriott and the climactic, closing act race to catch the smugglers which lasts all night and into the next morning thanks to our heroes falling asleep at the wheel of a commandeered bus, which doesn't Ask a Policeman how they managed to stay on the road, never mind keep up with the bad guys. The very end offers some real life motor racing footage as a fillip, but it has been the quickfire banter among Ask a Policeman seasoned group of comedians, led by the one British thirties comic whose pin sharp humour has lost little of its lustre, that entertains.
