The village of Turnbotham Round has the reputation of being the safest place in England with not a single crime committed in 10 years 4 months and 5 days. Which just happens to be the exact same amount of time that Sergeant Samuel Dudfoot Will Hay has been in charge of the local police station. Unfortunately when that information comes to the attention of the Chief Constable he threatens to close the station down and put Dudfoot and his two constables out of work, so it now falls to them to come up with some crime. Luckily, and unsurprisingly, the very thing they need has Ask a Policeman going on under their noses for at least the last 10 years 4 months…. This is a hugely enjoyable yarn about three incompetent and Ask a Policeman bent coppers who somehow manage to thwart a major smuggling operation. This is a lot of fun, I've liked Will Hay comedies since I first saw them as a boy, and this one Ask a Policeman solid, with snappy, amusing dialogue from the shady, but good-hearted, boys. -

You don’t have to be a crazy to work, but it helps: Work in comedies of the 1930s Glyn White, University of Salford Having recently published an overview of film, television and radio comedy (Mundy and White 2012) I am curious how relatively seldom work appears in the foreground of comedy texts. Comedy is drawn to controversial areas and ideological fractures in the social structure with issues of taste, class, gender, race and sexuality consistently appropriating the focus. Work is the background, the normal and quotidian against which the comic can emerge. Certainly there is humour to be found in work activities and environments, but work itself is so monolithic in our lives that our fondest wish is often to escape it and its domination of our time. -

Marriott Edgar
MARRIOTT EDGAR George Marriott Edgar is little known now because the style in which his words usually came to the public no longer carries popularity. But in his day one could find people freely reciting his words not only in performances but in pubs and at home. They were a kind of community singing and made people laugh. Perhaps they didn't know they were his, because the public reciter was the well-known actor Stanley Holloway (1890-1982). Edgar's background was itself interesting. His was a Lancashire family forming a theatre troupe, and he was born in Kirkcudbright in 1880. His parents Jennifer and Richard had married in 1875, but neither was aware that Richard had already fathered an illegitimate child by an actress. This boy turned out to be Edgar Wallace (1875-1932), the celebrated author, and it was a long time before the connection became known: in fact the Kirkcudbright Edgar remained ignorant of it until he met the more famous author in Hollywood not long before Wallace's death there. Edgar used the name Wallace for the lion (of Albert and the Lion) but this appears to be coincidence. Like the scions to so many music hall families Edgar took to the stage, and only began to come to notice in the long running The Co-Optimists in London in 1921-22. It was there that he met Stanley Holloway, who had already started his series of monologues. From 1930 Edgar supplied the words and their piano accompaniment. He also worked as a film scriptwriter, usually on comedies, including Oh Mr Porter! and The ghost train. -
