Clements It is a great privilege to write a foreword for this exciting new training guide, Peacebuilding in Divided Communities. The Karuna Center for Peacebuilding, under the inspired leadership of its founding director, Dr. Paula Green, and current director Olivia Stokes Dreier, has pioneered creative and successful processes for the transformation of violent conflict and post-conflict community peacebuilding in a wide range of violently divided societies. What makes Karuna Center and this training guide different from a large number of other organizations working in similar areas, and many other training manuals, is that Karuna Center combines the insights and wisdom of psychology, sociology, and politics in a holistic fashion. This approach generates respectful and effective dialogue, reconciliation, and collaborative problem solving between warring parties. Over the last 18 years, the Center has generated an enviable reputation for developing and maintaining creative working relationships with a wide variety of official and unofficial actors in more than 25 different conflict zones. It works with these actors to generate hope and cre- ative possibility in situations where many are pessimistic and stuck. Karuna Center training teams know from experience that when trust is replaced by mis- trust, security by insecurity, and hope by fear, it is critical to focus attention on processes that will foster trust and clear communications between groups in conflict. These efforts will only be successful, however, if the process designers and facilitators themselves are committed to creating non-violent solutions to violent problems. One of the primary and deep values within Karuna Center is a strong commitment to building cultures and structures of peace, and to exploring and exhausting all non-violent responses to conflict. That the organization has been able to work with government and non-governmental entities alike in this endeavor is testi- mony to a universal popular yearning to achieve peace by peaceful means, and to create robust, non-violent institutions capable of preventing and containing violence. In my own research and writing, I have been concerned with how we enlarge “Boundar- ies of Compassion,” and I am very pleased to note that this concern lies at the heart of much of the work described in this training guide. This too is another reason why the organization and this guide fill an important gap in the development and peacebuilding field. Far too often, development and conflict resolution experts view the existential dilemmas of working in con- flict environments as technical problems demanding narrow technical solutions. To its credit, Karuna Center refuses to treat direct and indirect violence as technical problems. By imbedding the work in a very firm “compassionate” frame, its trainers are able to work with individuals afflicted by conflict in order to help them see their problems in relation to others. In this way they stimulate higher levels of empathetic consciousness, appeal to altruistic impulses, and generate genuine understanding of the dynamics that have impelled people to divide them- selves from and dehumanize others. These processes of rehumanization, which lie at the heart of much of Karuna Center’s work, are a very distinctive feature of it. The principles that undergird this engagement were developed through work in a wide vari- ety of contexts. Karuna Center, along with other groups working in diverse areas, has established approaches that generate environments conducive to effective peacebuilding. Its staff and train- ers work with local partners, for example, and encourage those partners to set agendas suitable 1 for their local conditions. When Lorin Sklamberg sang “Come When I Call You” at the Brooklyn College Guthrie Centennial Conference the audience sat spellbound. The lyrics, Woody Guthrie’s 1949 reflections on the ravages of war, were set to a haunting modal melody composed by Skalmberg. As the song ended and the audience erupted in applause, I experienced one of those miraculous musical moments when the dots connected. Here was one of New York’s foremost interpreters of Jewish/Yiddish music, singing a contemporary song with sixty-year-old lyrics written by America’s iconic Okie troubadour, who in turn had structured the piece after an African American spiritual (“Children Go Where I Send Thee”). Sklamberg, along with his band mates, the Klezmatics, had added a fresh twist to the age-old folk process of forging new sounds from old traditions — in this case the seemingly unlikely merger of Eastern European Jewish music with an Anglo-prairie folk song via a nineteenth century black spiritual. So how did a nice Jewish band from New York City get caught up in Goyim folk music? The story began in 1997 at a Tanglewood concert that featured the renowned classical violinist Itzhak Perlman performing with the Klezmatics and three other klezmer bands.2 Woody Guthrie’s daughter, Nora, made her way backstage after the show and was surprised to learn that the lyrics to one of the Klezmatics’ songs, “Fisherlid” (“Fisherman’s Song”), had been written by her grandmother, the Yiddish poet Aliza Greenblatt.3 “I almost fell through the floor,” she recalled.

Luke LeCras i ABSTRACT Fascist and extreme right-wing political movements in Britain have been the subject of enduring interest to historians since 1945, with the majority of works centring on the British Union of Fascists (BUF), a political party founded and led by Sir Oswald Mosley between 1932 and 1940. Despite the BUF’s failure to achieve levels of support on par with many fascist movements in continental Europe, there is now a sizeable body of historiography dealing with the party as a minor case within the study of European fascism and as a unique phenomenon of radical politics in interwar Britain. By comparison, little interest has been devoted to aspects of British fascism not connected to Mosley or the BUF. Moreover, extreme right movements operating in Britain since 1945 have largely been characterized as either a direct legacy of the interwar movement or an attempt to reform British fascism under a different guise. This thesis re-examines the continuity between the interwar and the post-war iterations of the extreme right in Britain by focusing on the ideas and activism of Arthur Kenneth (A.K) Chesterton. A high-ranking member of the BUF who made substantial contributions to the party’s propaganda, Chesterton split with Mosley in 1938 to pursue an independent career in extreme right-wing politics that persisted until his death in 1973.

Memory and war doi:10.1017/S181638311900047X EDITORIAL MEMORY: A NEW HUMANITARIAN FRONTIER Vincent Bernard, Editor-in-Chief At a time when the humanitarian debate seems firmly focused on the future – digital transformation, autonomous weapons, climate change, the race to innovate, and so on – devoting an entire issue of the Review to the concept of memory may seem out of place. But memory is an essential part of this debate for more than one reason. First, if conflict victims are to gain any relief from their trauma, the psychological impact of their experience can no longer be overlooked. Traumatic memories cause severe suffering among survivors of violence, those who have been uprooted, and the families of people who remain missing long after a conflict has ended. Humanitarian organizations are increasingly aware that they have an obligation – if not necessarily the means – to treat a form of suffering that has remained invisible or beyond their normal scope of work for far too long. Understanding memory, not only individual memory but also collective memory, may be key to preventing future cycles of violence. Historical humiliations and representations of the past give rise to murderous identities, feed most conflicts and lay the groundwork for incompatible visions of the future. The collective memory of societies is stored in their cultures and can be embodied in their landmarks and monuments. The emotion felt around the world in reaction to the accidental fire that engulfed Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris demonstrates that memory – whether tangible or not – is worth safeguarding.
