Adelita, for God’s sake I beg you, calm the fire of my passion, because I love you and I cannot resist it and my faithful heart suffers for you. 3 “La Adelita” was one of the most popular songs of the Mexican Revolution (1910–1920). According to some sources (see Soto 1990:44), this ballad was originally inspired by a Durangan woman who had joined the Maderista movement4 at an early age. Troubadours made the song—and Adelita her- self—a popular emblem of the Revolution. As Baltasar Dromundo put it, “las guitarras de todas partes se iban haciendo eruditas en ese canto hasta que por fin la Revolución hizo de ella su verdadero emblema nacional” (guitar ists from all over were becoming experts in that song and it became the true em- blem of the Revolution) ( 1936:40). Significantly, Adelita’s surname, as well as the family names of many other soldaderas (soldier-women), remained virtually unknown. However, the popular songs composed in honor of these women contributed enormously to their fame and to documenting their role in the Revolution. -

Getty Research Institute (89.R.46) LOS ANGELES—The Mexican Revolution (1910–1920), which lasted a decade and transformed the nation, was extensively chronicled by Mexican, American, and European photographers and illustrators. Thousands of images captured a country at war. Never before, and possibly never since, had a country’s struggles been the subject of such scrutiny or fascination. Organized as part of Los Angeles’ celebration of the bicentennial of Mexico’s independence and the centennial of the Mexican Revolution, A Nation Emerges: The Mexican Revolution Revealed, presented by the Getty Research Institute and the Los Angeles Public Library, chronicles a complex, multifaceted chapter in Mexico’s history. A Nation Emerges, on view at the Central Library, Getty Gallery, 630 W. Fifth St., downtown Los Angeles, from September 8, 2011–June 3, 2012, showcases over 130 photographs, prints, and maps drawn primarily from the Special Collections of the Getty Research Institute. Inspiration for this thesis comes from a desire to understand an important participant of the Revolution, Venustiano Carranza, whose story deserves further investigation because of his catalytic role in the ten-year conflict. This thesis poses the argument that fluctuations in the rhetoric of Carranza’s Constitutionalist campaign reflect a sense of willingness on his part to adapt strategically to new contexts; however, to show deep conviction, he always stood behind a platform that was characterized by an unwavering faith in the political doctrine of constitutionality. -

In the last 50 years, cultural identity has become even more complicated. The arrival of Cubans in the early 1960s, Puerto Ricans in the 1970s, and Central Americans in the 1980s has made for increasing diversity of the state’s Hispanic, or Latino, population. However, the Mexican branch of the Hispanic family, combining Native, European, and African elements, has left the deepest imprint on the Lone Star State. The state’s name—pronounced Tay-hahs in Spanish— derives from the old Spanish spelling of a Caddo word for friend. Since the state was named Tejas by the Spaniards, it’s not surprising that many of its most important geographic features and locations also have Spanish names. Major Texas waterways from the Sabine River to the Rio Grande were named, or renamed, by Spanish explorers and Franciscan missionaries. Although the story of Texas stretches back millennia into prehistory, its history begins with the arrival of Spanish in the last 50 years, conquistadors in the early 16th cultural identity century. Cabeza de Vaca and his has become even companions in the 1520s and more complicated. 1530s were followed by the expeditions of Coronado and De Soto in the early 1540s. In 1598, Juan de Oñate, on his way to conquer the Pueblo Indians of New Mexico, crossed the Rio Grande in the El Paso area. -

Denton, Texas August, 1996 Mock, Melody. Hojas Volantes: Jose Guadalupe Posada, the Corrido, and the Mexican Revolution. Master of Arts (Art History), August 1996, 101 pp., 26 illustrations, references, 138 titles. This thesis examines the imagery of Jose Guadalupe Posada in the context of the Mexican Revolution with particular reference to the corrido as a major manifestation of Mexican culture. Particular emphasis is given to three corridos: "La Cucaracha," "La Valentina," and "La Adelita." An investigation of Posada's background, style, and technique places him in the tradition of Mexican art. Using examples of works by Posada which illustrate Mexico's history, culture, and politics, this thesis puts Posada into the climate of the Porfiriato and Revolutionary Mexico. After a brief introduction to the corrido, a stylistic analysis of each image, research into the background of the song and subject matter, and comments on the music draw together the concepts of image, music, and text.
