Short sections of text, not to exceed two paragraphs, may be quoted without explicit permission, provided that full acknowledgement is given. LUMS home page: http://www.lums.lancs.ac.uk/ An analysis of consumer response to corruption: Italy's Calciopoli scandal Babatunde Buraimo∗ Giuseppe Migaliy Rob Simmonsz July 22, 2014 Abstract The literature on economics of corruption is lacking in evidence on consumer responses to identifiable scandals. The Calciopoli episode affecting Italian football in the 2005/06 season serves as an opportunity for an empirical investigation into consumer (fan) behaviour following punishments imposed by the Italian league on clubs whose offi- cials were found guilty of corrupt practices. Using a difference-in-difference estimation method, where the convicted teams are the treatment group, we find that home atten- dances for treated teams fell by around 16%, relative to control group teams defined as those clubs not subject to league-imposed punishment. We show further that the fall in attendances identified with Calciopoli punishment resulted in non-trivial gate revenue reductions. Our results suggest that a sizeable number of fans of the punished clubs were subsequently deterred from supporting their teams inside the stadium. We explore alternative explanations of this adverse fan response. Keywords: Corruption; consumer demand; Calciopoli; football; attendances. JEL Classification: L83 1 Introduction The purpose of this paper is to identify, using a difference-in-difference methodology, a pos- sible consumer response to a specific episode of corruption.

No. 181 No.181 • November/December • 2018 No.181 ANYONE, ANYTIME, ANYWHERE Grassroots football celebrated throughout Europe EDITORIAL Theodore Theodoridis UEFA General Secretary INNOVATION THROUGH CONSULTATION he first few months of the 2018/19 season have brought excitement and innovation for UEFA and European football: a new competition, new technology, and new T tournament hosts. The UEFA Nations League has got off to a thrilling start; the Executive Committee has decided to introduce video assistant referees (VAR) in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League; and Germany has been selected to host the UEFA EURO 2024. UEFA is not in the business of making changes without good reason or by diktat. All these initiatives are the result of dialogue and consultation, and all have the same end goal: the continued success and further development of European football. UEFA, its member associations, and key stakeholders in the European Club Association and the European Leagues are working together for the good of the game. Football is a team game and UEFA is a team player. Consultation underpinned the creation of the UEFA Nations League, which kicked off in September. Turkey’s ecstatic celebrations after Emre Akbaba’s late double saw them come back from 2-0 down to win against Sweden; Kosovo’s joy at their first competitive match win, against the Faroe Islands; and Spain’s victories over England and Croatia after a disappointing World Cup showed how much this competition already means to players. Just as the UEFA Nations League was only introduced after extensive research and debate, UEFA has been careful not to rush the introduction of video assistant referees.

The 20th of April Juventus wins – for the 35th time1 and for the 8th straight - the Italian premier league (Serie A). As the team has knocked out of both the Champions league in the quarterfinals by Ajax and the Italian cup in the eight-fi- nals by Atalanta, it is time for Juventus’ president Andrea Agnelli and the top managers to think about the future. After few weeks of doubts and rumors, the 17th of May Juventus announces that Massimiliano Allegri will not be the coach of the team in the next season. The day after Juventus organizes a highly emotional press meeting with the president and the coach to communicate the decision. After one month, the 16th of June Juventus announces that the new trainer will be Maurizio Sarri, previously coach of Napoli (2015-18) and of Chelsea (2018/19). The new coach – that won the last European League with Chelsea - has a 3-years contract and the ambition to lead the club to new victories. During the Summer, Juventus buys and sells several players, with a net loss of about €90 million (=-181,7+92). Among the new players there are talents like Matthijs de Ligt, Adrien Rabiot, Aaron Ramsey and Danilo. At the same time, some promising players like Cancelo, Kean and Spinazzola leave the team.
