Stefan Arnason’s lineage on his father’s side This is an edited and translated version of a lineage that Judith Fulford (née Arnason) got from the Íslendingabók (see glossary below). I’ve also combine this with information found in the Book of Settlements, the Sturlunga and Njall Sagas, and information on Geni. Please let me know if you spot any errors or other issues. (Jon) The idea was to take Stefan Arnason’s direct patrilineal line back as far as it would go –– a line of fathers and sons with the names highlighted in red. This paper seeks to contribute to a recent debate on the use of private metal detect- ing and its value within archaeology. Specifically it explores – by presenting some recently found Viking Period artefacts from Denmark – how private metal detect- ing can contribute to our understanding of Viking minds. By bringing together the myths as related by Snorri Sturluson in the early 13th century with the artefacts, I argue that thanks to private metal detecting through the last decades, our ability to recognise Viking art as narrative art has improved substantially. Abstract This study explores how education and the medieval intellectual and pedagogical discipline of grammatica developed in Iceland during the medieval period, defined roughly from the official conversion to Christianity c.1000 to the Reformation c.1550. The first chapter deals with social, institutional, and financial aspects of teaching and learning in medieval Iceland, surveying key figures and places, but also arguing that more attention should be paid to the costs of learning and the effect of that on poor students. The second chapter addresses Latin education, discussing the importance of Latinity in medieval Iceland and the types of education that would involve Latin. It also addresses the idea of bilingual education and suggests ways in which extant vernacular writings can provide evidence for how Latin was taught and learned using the vernacular, using the model of Old English bilingual education. -

Sacrifice and Sacrificial Ideology in Old Norse Religion Daniel Bray The practice of sacrifice is often treated as 'the dark side' of Old Norse heathenism, by both medieval Christian commentators and modern scholars alike. However, within Norse religious practice, sacrificial ritual (blot) was one of the most central acts of religious observance. This paper will seek to examine aspects of the significance of blot within Old Norse religion, the ideology of sacrifice as it operated within this tradition and its relation to other Indo-European traditions, and the reactions to the issue of sacrifice by medieval contemporaries and modern scholarship. An examination of Old Norse literature relating to religious practice demonstrates the importance of blot within the religious life of the heathens of Scandinavia. Well over one hundred and fifty references to blot can be found in different sources, including Eddic and skaldic poetry, early historical works and annals, legal material, and saga literature. There are no extant scriptures or religious manuals from the heathen Norse that give a detailed explanation of the theory and operation of sacrifice. However, the accounts of sacrificial practice, taken altogether, provide a wealth of knowledge about how it was performed, by whom and to whom, as well as where, when and under what circumstances it was performed. The Old Norse verb bl6ta, which means 'to sacrifice', also has the extended meaning 'to worship', particularly by means of sacrifice, which testifies to the importance of sacrifice as a form of worship. In a language that had no proper word for its indigenous religion, the word blot had become a by-word for all things heathen, evidenced by terms such as blotdomr, blotskapr, or blotnaor 'heathen worship', bl6thus 'temple', bl6tmaor 'heathen worshipper' and even bl6tguo 'heathen god'.1 A survey of the literature reveals a number of essential features of sacrificial ritual in Old Norse heathenism. -

The trilogy has been adapted to the stage and a motion picture based on the stories, directed by Friðrik Þór Friðriksson, was chosen as the best Nordic film in 1997 at the Norwegian Amanda Awards. Einar’s two latest novels, A Gathering of Foes and Fury, as well as the forthcoming Poet (to be published in autumn 2012), form a trilogy set in 13th century Iceland – the tumultuous, violent, but spectacularly creative era that saw the tiny community torn apart by the bloodiest civil conflict in its history, and yet bequeathed the Icelandic sagas to history. The chaotic, paradoxical nature of the period is perfectly suited to Einar's polyphonic narrative. Norse and Classical Elements in English Literature at the Turn of the 18th and 19th Century Magda Králová (Charles University, Prague) ČLÁNKY / ARTICLES Abstract According to Snorri Sturluson (died 1241), the Icelandic chieftain, historian, poet, and mythog- rapher, the chief Norse god Óðinn was originally a mighty Oriental chieftain who was forced to abandon Asia under the Roman pressure and later became deified by his people. The typically medieval approach to the myth based on a euhemeristic interpretation and historicization of the pagan deities found a surprisingly keen response among the learned circles of the late 18th century Europe as it enabled the authors to confront the Norse and Classical civilization di- rectly. In this paper, I focus on three English works that deal with this topic, namely two poems by one of the major Romantic poets Robert Southey (The Race of Odin and The Death of Odin, 1795) and the drama Odin (1804) by Anglican priest and poet George Richards. The form of the latter one is of a special interest as it is – as the author himself states – “intended as an imitation of the manner of Æschylus.” I will examine the function of the Norse and Classical elements in these works and analyse the bulk of ideas and values that are attributed to the respective cultures. Moreover, the flexibility with which the myth is actualized and used for mediating dif- ferent political and ideological messages, will be discussed. In modern Icelandic archaeology, however, the Icelandic literary record, apart from official documents such as censuses, has not been considered a viable source for interpretation since the early 20th century. Although the Icelandic corpus is problematic in several ways, it is a source that should be used in Icelandic archaeological interpretation, if used properly with source criticism. This dissertation aims to advance Icelandic archaeological theory by reintegrating the medieval and post-medieval Icelandic literary corpus back into archaeological interpretation. The literature can help archaeologists working in Iceland to find pagan religious themes that span time and place. -

Superperception and Divine Intervention among the Old Norse Gods Declan Taggart School of English, O’Rahilly Building, University College Cork, Cork, Ireland; [email protected] Received: 11 July 2019; Accepted: 2 August 2019; Published: 6 August 2019 Abstract: In Old Norse mythology, gods like Freyja, Odin, and Thor are usually characterized as human-like creatures: they walk and ride animals, eat, grow old, and even die. Was there more to conceptions of Old Norse gods than those anthropomorphic representations? This article presents evidence that the gods of early Scandinavia were sometimes thought of as superperceiving and able to act in ways that defied the limitations of a physical body. It engages with and challenges theological correctness, a prominent theory in the Cognitive Science of Religion, to elucidate the sources of Old Norse religion and the cognitive and contextual foundations of the representations of gods encountered there. Following an examination of the mechanisms through which Old Norse gods’ superperception and disembodied action were narrativized and rationalized, the article concludes with a discussion of the consequences of non-anthropomorphic representations of the gods for understanding Scandinavian worshippers’ everyday religious life.
