Obras Representativas De La Colección Del MAM Se Exhiben En La Muestra Intenso Mexicano, En El Musée De L’Hospice Comtesse, De Lille, Francia Dirección de Difusión y Relaciones Públicas Ciudad de México, a 29 de abril de 2019 Boletín núm. 592 Obras representativas de la colección del MAM se exhiben en la muestra Intenso mexicano, en el Musée de l’Hospice Comtesse, de Lille, Francia • Piezas de Orozco, Siqueiros, Rivera, Tamayo, Kahlo, Costa, Anguiano, Rodríguez Lozano, Modotti y Manuel y Lola Álvarez Bravo, entre otros grandes creadores, son apreciadas en la ciudad francesa hasta el 30 de agosto El público francés y los visitantes internacionales pueden apreciar 48 obras representativas, entre pintura y fotografía, de la colección del Museo de Arte Moderno (MAM) del Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura. Piezas de José Clemente Orozco, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, Frida Kahlo, Olga Costa, Rosa Rolanda, Raúl Anguiano, Manuel Rodríguez Lozano, Francisco Toledo, Graciela Iturbide, Tina Modotti y Manuel y Lola Álvarez Bravo, entre otros grandes creadores, forman parte de la muestra Intenso mexicano, que es exhibida hasta el 30 de agosto en el Musée de l’Hospice Comtesse de Lille. Intenso mexicano es un ejercicio curatorial a cargo de Sylvia Navarrete Bouzard que evoca un rasgo cultural latente en el arte mexicano, desde la época posrevolucionaria hasta la preglobalización. (55) 1000 5600 Ext. 4086 [email protected] Este fenómeno, a la vez nostálgico y jubiloso, se manifiesta en un repertorio imaginario moldeado por la recuperación de mitos prehispánicos, la parodia de emblemas nacionales, la ambigüedad sexual como hipótesis identitaria, el reconocimiento de las luchas indígenas y las ruinas del neoliberalismo encarnadas por las olas de migrantes de sur a norte, a través del trabajo de artistas mexicanos y extranjeros que han residido en nuestro país. Piezas de Rivera, Orozco, Iturbide, Toledo, Xavier Esqueda, Julio Galán, Germán Venegas, Pablo Ortiz Monasterio y Daniel Lezama confirman que el ardor y la vitalidad de ciertos lenguajes visuales compaginan tradiciones ancestrales, sátira nacionalista y emoción contemporánea, al tiempo que adoptan una postura crítica frente a la ilusión de un mestizaje cultural que borra las diferencias en un ideal de integración falaz. En la exposición se incluyen diez obras con declaratoria de patrimonio artístico, entre éstas Las soldaderas de Orozco, The Revolution Gives Back Culture de Siqueiros, Retrato de Lupe Marín de Rivera y Los cocos de Kahlo, así como piezas simbólicas del acervo del MAM, como La vendedora de frutas de Costa, Músicas dormidas de Tamayo, Muchacha sentada de Rodríguez Lozano, La espina de Anguiano y Autorretrato de Rosa Rolanda. La muestra es presentada en el marco del Quinto Festival Cultural Lille3000 Eldorado, en el que México es el país invitado, y propone una exposición digital con el fin de dar a conocer las piezas que la conforman en más de 90 municipios franceses en donde la oferta cultural no es de fácil acceso. Intenso mexicano, testimonio de la riqueza de la colección del MAM, está distribuida en tres núcleos temáticos: ¡Tierra y libertad!, Cuerpo a cuerpo y Sueños encarnados. She moved to Mexico City as a young child, after her mother left the family under mysterious circumstances. Her father died when she was a young teenager, and she was then sent to live with the family of her half brother. It was here that she met the young Manuel Alvarez Bravo, a neighbor. They married in 1925 and moved to Oaxaca where Manuel was an accountant for the federal government. Manuel had taken up photography as an adolescent; he taught Lola and they took pictures together in Oaxaca. Manuel also taught Lola how to develop film and make prints in the darkroom.

    A Promenade Trough the Visual Arts in Carlos Monsivais Collection So many books have been written, all over the world and throughout all ages about collecting, and every time one has access to a collection, all the alarms go off and emotions rise up, a new and different emotion this time. And if one is granted access to it, the pleasure has no comparison: with every work one starts to understand the collector’s interests, their train of thought, their affections and their tastes. When that collector is Carlos Monsiváis, who collected a little bit of everything (that is not right, actually it was a lot of everything), and thanks to work done over the years by the Museo del Estanquillo, we are now very aware of what he was interested in terms of visual art in the 20th Century (specially in painting, illustration, engraving, photography). It is only natural that some of the pieces here —not many— have been seen elsewhere, in other exhibitions, when they were part of the main theme; this time, however, it is a different setting: we are just taking a stroll… cruising around to appreciate their artistic qualities, with no specific theme. This days it is unusual, given that we are so used to looking for an overarching “theme” in every exhibition. It is not the case here. Here we are invited to partake, along with Carlos, in the pleasures of color, texture, styles and artistic schools. We’ll find landscapes, portraits, dance scenes, streetscapes, playful scenes. All executed in the most diverse techniques and styles by the foremost mexican artist of the 20th Century, and some of the 21st as well.

    Un cuadro, una silla uncuadrounasilla.wordpress.com By Rubén Cervantes Garrido Lola Álvarez Bravo, in short 23 August 2015 It’s a shame to have to visit exhibitions with little time, having to see the works quickly, fearing the voice of the keeper telling us we must leave because it’s time to close. This was my case with the exhibition dedicated to Lola Álvarez Bravo (Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco, 1903 - Mexico City, 1993) at the Círculo de Bellas Artes. The exhibition no doubt deserved more than the scarce and hurried half an hour I spent in it, taking notes and looking at the photographs almost at the same time. I greatly value these works because, despite the hurry, they managed to move me; in a double sense, because not only were they extraordinary but they were also completely new to me. The pleasure of discovery. From insufficiently detained looks, I was capable of deducing at least three great themes that could define the work of this great photographer: Form. As in painting, some early-twentieth century photographers aimed to eliminate all narrative or sentimental traces from their works in order to reflect the beauty of pure form. Perhaps the greatest exponent of this tendency was the American Edward Weston, whose vegetables and shells, portrayed from very close up, adopt abstract forms and suggest surprising associations, like the contorted peppers that resemble human torsos. An admirer of Weston, Lola Álvarez Bravo was also a practitioner of this alienation of objects and demonstrated how an objective photographic shot can deceive the eye: the way in which she chose to frame a group of wood shavings circa 1935 could lead us to believe that we are looking at corkscrews or blond locks of hair.

Margarita Nelken nació en el seno de una familia judía radicada en Ma- drid, aunque de origen extranjero, en parte centroeuropeo y en parte franco- sefardí. Son pocos los datos que conocemos de sus ascendientes paternos. Su pa- dre, el joyero Julio Nelken Waldberg, nació el 11 de agosto de 1860 en Bres- lau, capital de la Baja Silesia, en el suroeste de Polonia, a la sazón pertenecien- te al Imperio Alemán. Era hijo de Michel Nelken (nacido en Kalish, Polonia, y fallecido en Berlín, antes de 1894) y de Pauline Waldberg (oriunda de Lem- berg, Ucrania, y que moriría en Berlín, en 1918). A tenor de sus declaraciones en el padrón madrileño, Julio Nelken debió de llegar a la Villa y Corte entre los años 1886 y 188818. Por entonces, la rama materna llevaba algunos años instalada en la capital de España. Su madre, Juana Mansberger y León, era hija de un relojero nacido en Hungría, Enrique Mansberger Klein (Szegedin, 27 de mayo de 1837- Madrid, 1909), y de Ángela León y León (Bayona, 9 de febrero de 1852- Madrid, 1925), francesa proveniente de una familia sefardí de Bayona. Al tiempo de nacer Juana Mansberger en Anglet, el 13 de octubre de 1873, sus padres residían ya en Madrid, desde 1866 y 1871-2, respectivamente19. Enrique Mansberger trabajaba como relojero de Palacio desde el reinado de Alfonso XII. Y parece ser que, al llegar Julio Nelken a Madrid, ambos se asociaron en un negocio de joyería y relojería, situado en el número 15 de la Puerta del Sol, en cuya entreplanta residía la familia Mansberger.

    MANUEL ÁLVAREZ BRAVO: PHOTOPOETRY 12 JUL - 8 SEP 2019 MANUEL ÁLVAREZ BRAVO: PHOTOPOETRY 12 JUL - 8 SEP 2019 Con su hijo | With her son, 1950s Print Sales presents a selection of rare platinum and silver gelatin prints by the great modernist Mexican photographer, Manuel Álvarez Bravo (b. Mexico City, 1902-2002). Initially self-taught, Álvarez Bravo first picked up a camera as a teenager while working at a government job. His early style was influenced by studying international photographic journals particularly looking at the work of European artists such as Edward Weston and Tina Modotti both of whom he later met. Through them, he was introduced to Mexico’s avant-garde scene, including Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. His work increasingly began to reflect the influence of homegrown movements such as the Mexican Muralists as well as an interest in identity politics. By the mid 1930s, Álvarez Bravo was being exhibited alongside contemporaries Henri-Cartier Bresson and Walker Evans and shown in such seminal group exhibitions as Twenty Centuries of Mexican Art (Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1940), and the worldwide tour of Edward Steichen’s Family of Man in 1955. Álvarez Bravo’s sublimely lyrical, yet unsentimentalised images of his beloved Mexico and its people, and his exceptional ability to transform the rituals of everyday life into something fantastical and monumental, have established him as one of the most important figures in 20th century Latin American Photography. Photopoetry draws on images from the comprehensive book of the same title (Thames and Hudson, 2008) which celebrate the acuity of his eye and his talent for capturing the world around him with evident tenderness and respect for his home- land.

    BIOGRAPHY OF FRIDA KAHLO FRIDA KAHLO, or MAGDALENA CARMEN FRIDA KAHLO CALDERÓN, was born on July 6, 1907 in the Mexico City home owned by her parents since 1904, known today as the Blue House. Daughter of Wilhelm (Guillermo) Kahlo, of German descent, and of Mexican Matilde Calderón, Frida was the third of four daughters of whom her two sisters, Matilde and Adriana, were the eldest and Cristina, the youngest. At the age of six Frida fell ill with polio, causing her right leg to remain shorter than the other, which resulted in bullying. Nevertheless, this setback did not prevent her from being a curious and tenacious student. She completed her high school studies at the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria. At the age of 18, on September 17th, 1925, Frida was in a tragic accident. A streetcar crashed into the bus she was traveling in. The consequences to her person were terrible: several bones were fractured and her spinal cord, damaged. While she was immobilized for several months, Frida began to paint. Afterwards, she formed relationships with several artists, including the photographer Tina Modotti and the already renowned artist Diego Rivera. In 1929, Frida married the muralist. The couple lived at the Blue House, Frida's childhood home, as well as at Diego's studio in San Ángel. Kahlo and Rivera also resided in Cuernavaca and in various cities of the United States: Detroit, San Francisco, and New York. They stayed for short periods of time in Mexico City. In 1930, Frida suffered her first miscarriage. In November of that same year and for work- related reasons, the couple traveled to San Francisco.
