The K-Pop Wave: an Economic Analysis
The K-pop Wave: An Economic Analysis Patrick A. Messerlin1 Wonkyu Shin2 (new revision October 6, 2013) ABSTRACT This paper first shows the key role of the Korean entertainment firms in the K-pop wave: they have found the right niche in which to operate— the ‘dance-intensive’ segment—and worked out a very innovative mix of old and new technologies for developing the Korean comparative advantages in this segment. Secondly, the paper focuses on the most significant features of the Korean market which have contributed to the K-pop success in the world: the relative smallness of this market, its high level of competition, its lower prices than in any other large developed country, and its innovative ways to cope with intellectual property rights issues. Thirdly, the paper discusses the many ways the K-pop wave could ensure its sustainability, in particular by developing and channeling the huge pool of skills and resources of the current K- pop stars to new entertainment and art activities. Last but not least, the paper addresses the key issue of the ‘Koreanness’ of the K-pop wave: does K-pop send some deep messages from and about Korea to the world? It argues that it does. Keywords: Entertainment; Comparative advantages; Services; Trade in services; Internet; Digital music; Technologies; Intellectual Property Rights; Culture; Koreanness. Mair, Professor of Chinese Language and Literature, University of Pennsylvania “This excellent book of essays represents the best of the conference volume genre. It includes concepts of the ideal lover, historical fiction and elite women’s reading in Chôson Korea and Meiji Japan, and how Europeans invented ‘Sinology’.” Michael S. Sound & Dance for Sky, Earth and Humans
Sound & Dance for Sky, Earth and Humans Performance Program Gala Dinner 15th JECKU Top Executive Meeting Busan, Nov. 1~3, 2006 Performance Overview Sound of Ancient Times This performance begins with the strong beat of a traditional big drum. The echo of ancient times is created with a long and rumbling peal of thunder. The fast “Whimori” rhythm builds gradually to make our hearts throb at the end. The performers display their talents on the drum in changing rhythm, which alternates fast and slow in turn. During the performance, the drummers change costumes several times and move their drums around the stage, creating a more dramatic impact for the audience. Their skills and abilities in playing the huge drum are breathtaking. Boo-Chae-Choom (Fan Dance) This performance originates from the folding fan used in a shaman ritual. The dancers are dressed in a Korean court outfit, called Dangui, wear Hwagan, the flower crown, and hold feathered fans beautifully decorated with flower drawings in both hands. They fold, unfold and turn their fans to create waves, flowers and other forms in a fantastic display. Nov. 1~3, 2006 01 Performance Overview Electronic String Music Band Hwang Jini This is an electronic-fusion Korean classical music band consisting of Korean musical instruments - Daegeum (a large transverse bamboo flute), Kayageum (a 12-stringed harp), and Haegeum (a 2-stringed spike fiddle) - and electronic violin and electronic cello. To some extent, it was true. James did find inspiration for much of his life’s work in his emotional torment and the many years he spent fighting drug addiction and depression. And he did hail from an affluent, musically talented family that could afford to send its progeny to exclusive prep schools and expensive private mental hospitals. But now James Taylor in his fifties has the benefit of hindsight to moderate any lingering grudges against a press that persistently pigeonholed him – first as a sort of Kurt Cobain of his day, and much later as a sleepy crooner with his most creative years behind him. -
