Ethics for Digital Journalists
ETHICS FOR DIGITAL JOURNALISTS The rapid growth of online media has led to new complications in journalism ethics and practice. While traditional ethical principles may not fundamentally change when information is disseminated online, applying them across platforms has become more challenging as new kinds of interactions develop between jour- nalists and audiences. In Ethics for Digital Journalists , Lawrie Zion and David Craig draw together the international expertise and experience of journalists and scholars who have all been part of the process of shaping best practices in digital journalism. Drawing on contemporary events and controversies like the Boston Marathon bombing and the Arab Spring, the authors examine emerging best practices in everything from transparency and verifi cation to aggregation, collaboration, live blogging, tweet- ing, and the challenges of digital narratives. At a time when questions of ethics and practice are challenged and subject to intense debate, this book is designed to provide students and practitioners with the insights and skills to realize their potential as professionals. Lawrie Zion is an Associate Professor of Journalism at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia, and editor-in-chief of the online magazine upstart. He has worked as a broadcaster with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and as a fi lm journalist for a range of print publications. He wrote and researched the 2007 documentary The Sounds of Aus , which tells the story of the Australian accent. David Craig is a Professor of Journalism and Associate Dean at the University of Oklahoma in the United States. A former newspaper copy editor, he is the author of Excellence in Online Journalism: Exploring Current Practices in an Evolving Environ- ment and The Ethics of the Story: Using Narrative Techniques Responsibly in Journalism . -

Emotion and digital journalism Karin Wahl-Jorgensen Cardiff University Introduction The era of digital journalism represents a shift in the forms of knowing – or epistemology – of journalism. This shift, I argue, has opened up new spaces for more emotional and personalized forms of expression in public discourse. In referring to digital journalism, I am interested in tracing the consequences of a particular set of developments that have occurred as a result of the “digital disruption” (Jones and Salter, 2011) engendered by the emergence of online journalism and convergence. These processes have been ongoing since the 1990s (e.g. Scott, 2005) but remain profoundly destabilizing and transformative. The changes to journalism practice that have resulted from these processes are multifarious and far-reaching, involving fundamental challenges to everything from the business model of journalism to journalism’s self-understanding and its relationships to audience. As Franklin (2013: 2) argued in an editorial to the first issue of the journal, Digital Journalism: Digital journalism is complex, expansive and, even in these early days, constitutes a massive and ill-defined communications terrain which is constantly in flux. Digital journalism engages different types of journalistic organizations and individuals, embraces distinctive content formats and styles, and involves contributors with divergent editorial ambitions, professional backgrounds, and educational experiences and achievements, who strive to reach diverse audiences. 1 Franklin’s description of the complexities of the digital journalism landscape highlights how this new era has challenged conventional understandings of who journalists are and what journalism is, involving an ever-wider range of groups and individuals, as well as genres and platforms. -

His work examines new journalistic norms, practices, and organisations in the digital age. His writing has appeared in the New York Times, the Columbia Journalism Review, Wired magazine, and other outlets, and in various academic journals. His book Deciding What’s True: The Rise of Political Fact-Checking in American Journalism was published in September 2016 by Columbia University Press, and he is co-author of The Story So Far: What We Know About the Business of Digital Journalism. Previously he worked as a magazine journalist and a media and technology analyst. Federica Cherubini is a media consultant and editorial researcher, based in London. -

While some hail this opportunity to improve journalism, others fear that too much importance is placed on these personal accounts, undermining ethical standards and, eventually, professional journalism. Th is paper summarizes recent discussions about citizen journalism: its various forms and coming of age; its role in international news; the opportunities for a more democratic practice of journalism; the signifi cance for mass media outlets as they struggle for survival; the risks that unedited citizens’ contributions may pose for audiences, mainstream media, and citizen journalists themselves. Th e paper ends with a call for a clearer defi nition of ‘citizen journalism’ and for further ethical, legal and business training, so that its practitioners continue to be taken seriously by professional media and audiences alike. 1. Theoretically, they can be the sites where new products, novel revenue streams and alternative ways of organizing digital journalism are discovered, tested, and advanced. In practice, however, the situation appears to be more complicated. Besides the normal pressures facing new businesses, entrepreneurs in digital news are faced with specific challenges. Express Yourself* By Thomas Kunkel American Journalism Review, December 2006/January 2007 “No man but a blockhead ever wrote, except for money.” — Samuel Johnson Sam, you were the original Dr. J, and your social observations were so spot-on that you occupy almost 10 pages in my “Oxford Dictionary of Quotations.” Still, were you alive today, I’ll bet you’d be blogging away at the DailyDoc or some such, and probably for no more money than the millions of other “blockheads” out there who are writing their noggins off. As a card-carrying media professional, I empathize with my brethren and sistren fretting at the notion of all those semi-pros and amateurs traducing our heretofore exclusive right to decide What’s Important. Who let that happen? I mean, wasn’t somebody supposed to be guarding the door? But, really, this must qualify as the least surprising phenomenon going. From our cave days humans have indulged a desire to let others know that we are here, that we matter. From there it’s not much of a leap to “We want to be heard,” and the Internet is proving to be the greatest megaphone ever devised. Ironically, from a news standpoint, the rise of all-comers journalism is really just a circling back to our roots. We often forget that the very term stems from “jour- nal,” and what are blogs and MySpace pages but contemporary journals? As Tom Rosenstiel and Bill Kovach reminded us in their fine book “The Ele- ments of Journalism,” this is precisely how modern news got its start. -

MAPPING DIGITAL MEDIA: GLOBAL FINDINGS DIGITAL JOURNALISM: MAKING NEWS, BREAKING NEWS Mapping Digital Media is a project of the Open Society Program on Independent Journalism and the Open Society Information Program Th e project assesses the global opportunities and risks that are created for media by the switch- over from analog broadcasting to digital broadcasting; the growth of new media platforms as sources of news; and the convergence of traditional broadcasting with telecommunications. Th ese changes redefi ne the ways that media can operate sustainably while staying true to values of pluralism and diversity, transparency and accountability, editorial independence, freedom of expression and information, public service, and high professional standards. Th e project, which examines the changes in-depth, builds bridges between researchers and policymakers, activists, academics and standard-setters. It also builds policy capacity in countries where this is less developed, encouraging stakeholders to participate in and infl uence change. At the same time, this research creates a knowledge base, laying foundations for advocacy work, building capacity and enhancing debate. Covering 56 countries, the project examines how these changes aff ect the core democratic service that any media system should provide—news about political, economic and social aff airs. Th e MDM Country Reports are produced by local researchers and partner organizations in each country. Cumulatively, these reports provide a unique resource on the democratic role of digital media. In addition to the country reports, research papers on a range of topics related to digital media have been published as the MDM Reference Series.
