Earlier, Carlo had seen Domenico talking to ‘certain persons’ in one of the city’s many taverns and had mentioned that his behaviour did not befit a gentiluomo (gentleman), but a becco fotuto (fucking cuckold). Their quarrel es- calated a day later when Domenico was waiting for him with a drawn sword, accompanied by his wife Diamante and the Lambertini brothers. When Carlo tried to duck the stones Diamante and the brothers were throwing at him, Do- menico struck him with his sword, causing wounds which would eventually prove fatal for Carlo. Domenico was able to turn the capital punishment he received into a pardon through a peace accord with Carlo’s kin and the Lam- bertini brothers were exiled. Although her role in the homicide was similar to that of the brothers, no sentence is recorded for Diamante. While the criminal court records do not provide any information as to why Diamante got off so lightly compared to her male co-offenders, perceptions of gender may well have been at play. -

The Capital Sculpture of Wells Cathedral: Masons, Patrons and the Margins of English Gothic Architecture MATTHEW M. REEVE For Eric Fernie This paper considers the sculpted capitals in Wells cathedral. Although integral to the early Gothic fabric, they have hitherto eluded close examination as either a component of the building or as an important cycle of ecclesiastical imagery in their own right. Consideration of the archaeological evidence suggests that the capitals were introduced mid-way through the building campaigns and were likely the products of the cathedral’s masons rather than part of an original scheme for the cathedral as a whole. Possible sources for the images are considered. The distribution of the capitals in lay and clerical spaces of the cathedral leads to discussion of how the imagery might have been meaningful to diCerent audiences on either side of the choir screen. introduction THE capital sculpture of Wells Cathedral has the dubious honour of being one of the most frequently published but least studied image cycles in English medieval art. The capitals of the nave, transepts, and north porch of the early Gothic church are ornamented with a rich array of figural sculptures ranging from hybrid human-animals, dragons, and Old Testament prophets, to representations of the trades that inhabit stiC-leaf foliage, which were originally highlighted with paint (Figs 1, 2).1 The capitals sit upon a highly sophisticated pier design formed by a central cruciform support with triple shafts at each termination and in the angles, which oCered the possibility for a range of continuous and individual sculpted designs in the capitals above (Fig. -

The good news is from the Vatican. Pope Francis had appointed a new coadjutor bishop of San Jose, Bishop Oscar Cantú of Las Cruces, New Mexico. The sad news is that Bishop Rich Garcia, Bishop of Monterey, died this morning at 6:30 a.m. The Lord gives and the Lord takes away. Such is the way of life. 2nd Offering for Amigos for Christ As you might be aware, we have As many of you know Bishop Rich Garcia was had to cancel our yearly mission trip the vocations director for the Diocese of San to Nicaragua for this year due to Jose when I joined the diocese and then became the Vicar of Clergy before civil unrest in the country. It was becoming auxiliary bishop of Sacramento and then bishop of Monterey. He very sad for us as we have held this was a good friend and a wonderful priest and bishop. Only 6 months ago mission for almost 10 years. It is he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of dementia that ultimately took even harder on the people of his life. Please pray for him and may he enjoy the reward of his faithfulness Nicaragua. We received a note from and kindness. Catholic Clergy There are many roles within the Catholic Church for both ordained and non-ordained people. A non-ordained person is typically referred to as a lay person, or one who is not a member of the clergy. One who is ordained is someone who has received the sacrament of Holy Orders. In the Catholic Church only men may be ordained to the Clergy, which sets us apart from other Christian denominations. The reasoning behind this is fairly straightforward; Since God himself, in His human form of Jesus Christ, instituted the priesthood by the formation of the 12 Apostles which were all male, The Church is bound to follow His example. Once a man is ordained, he is not allowed to marry, he is asked to live a life of celibacy. However married men may become ordained Deacons, but if their wife passes away they do not remarry. It’s very rare, but there are instances of married men being ordained as priests within the Catholic Church. Most are converts from other Christian denominations where they served in Clerical roles, look up the story of Father Joshua Whitfield of Dallas Texas. At the top of the Catholic Clergy hierarchy is the Pope, also known as the Vicar of Christ, and the Bishop Rome. St. Peter was our very first Pope, Jesus laid his hands upon Peter and proclaimed “upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.” ~MT 16:18. Our current Pope is Pope Francis, formally Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina. -

Before that time, only one bishop served within an ecclesial province as sole spiritual leader of that region. Those clerics who hold this dignity are properly entitled “Titular Bishops” whom the Holy See has simultaneously assigned to assist a local Ordinary in the exercise of his episcopal responsibilities. The term ‘Auxiliary’ refers to the supporting role that the titular bishop provides a residential bishop but in every way, auxiliaries embody the fullness of the episcopal dignity. Although the Church considers both Linus and Cletus to be the first auxiliary bishops, as Assistants to St. Peter in the See of Rome, the first mention of the actual term “auxiliary bishop” was made in a decree by Pope Leo X (1513‐1521) entitled de Cardinalibus Lateranses (sess. IX). In this decree, Leo confirms the need for clerics who enjoy the fullness of Holy Orders to assist the Cardinal‐Bishops of the Suburbicarian Sees of Ostia, Velletri‐Segni, Sabina‐Poggia‐ Mirteto, Albano, Palestrina, Porto‐Santo Rufina, and Frascati, all of which surround the Roman Diocese. -

302 THEOLOGICAL TRENDS Canon Law and Ecclesiology II The Ecclesiological Implications of the 1983 Code of Canon Law Introduction N A PREVIOUS article, published in The Way, January 1982, I gave an I outline of the highly centralized and clerical view of the Church that was common in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This was the view of the Church that was expounded in most seminary text-books on the subject. It was this notion of the Church, too, that was reflected in the 1917 Code of Canon Law, and I indicated a number of examples of this centralized approach from the 1917 Code: local customs as such were considered undesirable (C.5); bishops were forbidden to grant dispensations from the general law of the Church, unless the faculty to do so had been expressly granted them by the Pope, or the case was particularly urgent. I also indicated that this same theological outlook was evident in the whole structure and content of Book II of the 1917 Code. I went on then to show how the second Vatican Council put forward a doctrine of the Church which puts greater emphasis on the importance of the local Church. The universal Church is now seen not primarily as a society of individuals, but as abody with different organs, each having its own proper characteristics, a communion of churches, together making up the Catholic Church. In this second article, I shall consider how this conciliar teaching has influenced the structure and contents of the new Code of Canon Law, promulgated by Pope John Paul II on 25 January of this year, 1983. -

Authority and Responsibilities of an Apostolic Administrator in a diocese in a time of “sede vacante” (“the seat being vacant”) August 25, 2020 (adapted from the Diocese of Buffalo) With the installation of Archbishop Mitchell Rozanski as the ordinary for the Archdiocese of St. Louis, it was announced today that His Holiness, Pope Francis, has appointed Most Reverend Robert J. McManus, Bishop of the Diocese of Worcester, to serve as Apostolic Administrator or the Diocese of Springfield. The Diocese of Springfield is now in a time of “sede vacante,” as the seat of the diocese is vacant until a new bishop is appointed and installed. A number of changes are in effect during this time. For example, • Offices that exercise general or specific authority granted directly by the diocesan bishop cease since their authority derives from the diocesan bishop, such as the Vicars General and other vicars. • Some offices remain during the vacant see: chancellor, judicial vicar and financial officer. These offices are necessary for the ordinary operation of the diocese and so remain in place and assist the Apostolic Administrator in his work. • While the judicial vicar’s authority is granted by the diocesan bishop, it does not cease during the vacant see so the process of justice within the diocese can continue without interruption. What is an Apostolic Administrator? An apostolic administrator is a bishop who is appointed by the pope to see to the good order and administration of a diocese that is awaiting the appointment of a permanent bishop or ordinary. In addition to his usual pastoral responsibilities as bishop, the apostolic administrator has the authority to make the necessary decisions for the daily operations of the diocese.
