I don't remember where we found the phrase. Perhaps we read it, or dreamed it out of the air; it seemed prescient. We wanted to honor those who gave us inspiration, and to find the many ways music can become art: rhythm and melody, drawing and poetry and film. And we hoped by word and deed to inspire. Our greatest compliment is that none of the artists who drew from our well would sound like us, inhabiting their own inner universes. We share this milestone moment of Horses' lifeline in the Brooklyn of my mother's birth, where Patti met Robert Mapplethorpe, and where Bobby Fischer first learned his knight's gambit. Our great privilege and honor. -Lenny Kaye Special thanks to Clive Davis and Jane Friedman. Appreciations: Rosemary Carroll; Jeff Jones and all at Sony Legacy; and Andi Ostrowe. Art and music cross-fertilized with a vengeance following a stripped-down, hard-edged, anti- establishment ethos, with some artists plastering city walls with self-designed posters or spray painted monikers, while others commandeered abandoned buildings, turning vacant garages into makeshift theaters for Super 8 film screenings and raucous performances. Many artists found the experimental music scene more vital and conducive to their contrarian ideas than the handful of contemporary art galleries in the city. Artists in turn formed bands, performed in clubs and non- profit art galleries, and self-published their own records and zines while using public access cable channels as a venue for media experiments and cultural debates. Looking at Music: Side 2 is organized by Barbara London, Associate Curator, Department of Media and Performance Art, The Museum of Modern Art, and succeeds Looking at Music (2008), an examination of the interaction between artists and musicians of the 1960s and early 1970s.

Couverture : Photo © Claire Alexandra Hartfiel.

You might say that punk has played a pivotal role in my life. Needless to say, I have also seen a great deal of media misrepresentation over the years. I completely agree with Craig O’Hara’s perception when he states in his fine introduction to American punk rock, self-explanatorily entitled The Philosophy of Punk: More than Noise, that “Punk has been characterized as a self-destructive, violence oriented fad [...] which had no real significance.” (1999: 43.) He quotes Larry Zbach of Maximum RockNRoll, one of the better known international punk fanzines1, who speaks of “repeated media distortion” which has lead to a situation wherein “more and more people adopt the appearance of Punk [but] have less and less of an idea of its content.
