Current Directions in Ecomusicology
Current Directions in Ecomusicology This volume is the first sustained examination of the complex perspectives that comprise ecomusicology—the study of the intersections of music/sound, culture/society, and nature/environment. Twenty-two authors provide a range of theoretical, methodological, and empirical chapters representing disciplines such as anthropology, biology, ecology, environmental studies, ethnomusicology, history, literature, musicology, performance studies, and psychology. They bring their specialized training to bear on interdisciplin- ary topics, both individually and in collaboration. Emerging from the whole is a view of ecomusicology as a field, a place where many disciplines come together. The topics addressed in this volume—contemporary composers and traditional musics, acoustic ecology and politicized soundscapes, mate- rial sustainability and environmental crisis, familiar and unfamiliar sounds, local places and global warming, birds and mice, hearing and listening, bio- music and soundscape ecology, and more—engage with conversations in the various realms of music study as well as in environmental studies and cultural studies. As with any healthy ecosystem, the field of ecomusicol- ogy is dynamic, but this edited collection provides a snapshot of it in a formative period. Each chapter is short, designed to be accessible to the non- specialist, and includes extensive bibliographies; some chapters also provide further materials on a companion website. An introduction and interspersed editorial summaries help guide readers through four current directions— ecological, fieldwork, critical, and textual—in the field of ecomusicology. Aaron S. Allen is Associate Professor of Musicology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, USA, where he is also director of the Envi- ronmental and Sustainability Studies Program. -

ABSTRACT Title of Document: “ALAN LOMAX'S iPOD?”: SMITHSONIAN GLOBAL SOUND AND APPLIED ETHNOMUSICOLOGY ON THE INTERNET David Font, Master of Arts, 2007. Directed By: Jonathan Dueck, PhD School of Music The phenomenon of digital music on the Internet marks a turning point in the way human beings make, listen to, and share music. Smithsonian Global Sound is, variously: 1) a digital music download service; 2) the central hub of a network of digital music archives; and 3) the Internet branch of Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. Like all things vital, Smithsonian Global Sound is also developing rapidly. This thesis synthesizes a brief history of the Smithsonian Global Sound project, explores some of the vital issues related to the project, and offers a series of observations and recommendations for the project's development. Latham, Music Studies Department (Music Theory) ABSTRACT The purpose of this monograph is to promote Kazakh violin repertoire by focusing on the influence of Kazakh folklore on the development of violin performance in Kazakhstan in the beginning of the twentieth century. The monograph will include a brief discussion of the history of Kazakhstan, a historical background of folk music and its importance to the development of violin performance in Kazakhstan, a discussion of Kazakh folk strings instruments in relation to violin performance in Kazakhstan, and discussion of selected violin works by Kazakh composers with strong folk influences. A catalogue of violin works of Kazakhstan that use folkloric material will be provided as well. In my study I will rely on available sources, including books, articles, dissertations, reviews, recordings, visual materials and musical scores. E-mail: [email protected] KAZAKH MUSIC CULTURE ON THE GLOBALIZATION CROSSROADS: ETHNIC TRADITIONS VERSUS COMPOSER SCHOOL IN INTERCULTURAL INTERACTION Abstract. At the present stage, Kazakh musical culture is heterogeneous. It represents traditions coexisting at the same time and interacting with each other: Kazakh ethnic and newly established composer school (tradition). Examining changes in cultural landscapes of the 20th century I reveal the peculiarities of interaction and dialogue between two kinds of culture: ethnic and global (endogenous and exogenous). The procedures include the complex study of the history of Kazakh culture in the 20th century, stylistic analysis of traditional and composer’s music, semiotic approach to intercultural interaction, as far as a comparative analysis of oral and written music of 19th and 20th centuries. On one hand, dramatic changes in the structure of music culture were caused by external objective reasons: new industrial and postindustrial civilization phases (urbanization and information technologies); intensification of interaction with western (mainly Russian) cultures, etC. On the other hand, some changes were inspired by inner factors: diverse development of local song and kui (dombyra piece) traditions; Soviet cultural policy. As a result new type (or layer) of national culture - Kazakh Composers’ music - appeared. It was connected with the formation of a national style based on transcriptions and borrowing.
